I bought this guitar from a stranger only because I wanted to have another guitar to play. What a shock it was to plug it in after having it set up by a professional! I do not know how this guitar was set up out of the box. It's a good idea to have a professional set up all your guitars so as to make them all that much more fun to play.

I've been playing guitar for 30 years now, and was about to stop playing before deciding to find some new guitars to rekindle my interest in playing guitar. I don't have an untrained ear when it comes to rock guitar so let me conclude this paragraph simply--this guitar is rock action.

The pickups are chunky, which is what humbuckers should be for rock folks. Distortion is wonderful for the old school hard sounds of Nirvana or the not as old school hard sounds of The Hellacopters.

When I play clean, I like the guitar to have a heavy bass sound to it. It really does sound fantastic on this guitar. The bridge pickup on clean tone sounds good, but please use some bass in your tone so as not to rip the ears off of people.

You could play jazz, blues, or metal, on this guitar pretty well. Why would you though! The guitar is Rock Action so play rock and roll, even the sleaziest rock you can find to play won't discourage this guitar.

My guitar is about five years old so I have not had scratchy tone/volume potentiometers or a scratchy input jack (the usual guitar problems in the world of Rock Action). The pick ups sound full and bright to this day.

The neck is thin, which is great. Enjoy it! It's very comfortable to play on this guitar's neck; and therefore, better to play faster than a person would think for something with Les Paul in the name. The fretboard is also just flat enough to make a person forget the arc of a Stratocaster, which is probably, as far as I can tell, the most difficult guitar to feel as though one is getting better at playing guitar. I do, of course, own a Stratocaster so don't think that I am talking out of school.

This guitar out-performs guitars well beyond its price range so buy a couple so as to have the proper "Rock Action" look while playing for the crowds.

All in all, if you want Rock Action, then I highly recommend this guitar to you. You could read endless reviews about X or Y guitar. I suggest, however, that you go find one and play it. That'll be the truest test of whether or not Rock Action is for you.

I give it 5 stars because the guitar does not pretend to be anything it isn't. It delivers on its promise. If I wanted to play jazz, then I wouldn't pick up this guitar first. No, Rock Action is the thought that comes to my mind when I see this guitar waiting for me.

I've been playing guitar for six years. Last week I saw this guitar and tried it out. I was immediately surprised by how well it played given the price. The neck is a little beefy, but not unbearably so. It was a bit hard to slide my thumb across the neck, but a smudge of polish would fix that. Pickups are decent, but you'll probably want to switch them out for better one's or buy a pedal. Honestly the perfect guitar for beginners, and a great beater for more expierianced. I usually play metal or punk, so the basic setup the guita has totally suited my style.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

It's fine for a beginner guitar, but after you get a little better you'll need something else. The finish on the back of the neck sometimes makes it hard to slide your hand around on the frets. There's some fret buzz and no matter how you adjust it, it won't go away which is kind of a bummer) The craftsmanship isn't the best. The volume and tone knobs come loose all the time and require constant maintenance. After a good 30-40 minutes of playing, you'll have to tune it up again. That gets old. It's not the worst guitar I've had, but if you're looking to get something more 'user friendly' I would suggest spending a little extra on something better. It'll be worth it in the long run. Oh, you'll definitely need some strings. The ones that come slapped on it are less than impressive.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

Wanted to get back into playing guitar after about 5 years of not playing at all. I was trying to spend not too much but still get a great guitar. You really cant beat this guitar if you are looking to spend under 200. Its only 150 but sounds and looks like it costs 500. The tone is very clean and the guitar itself is very high quality. SOme people complain on other reviews about it going out of tune easily but I think it stays in tune fine. I play it every day and its never really out of tune.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

I am 32 yrs old and have been playing for 19 years now. Been in a few bands that did local gigs, and just small time stuff. I actually bought my Epiphone Les Paul Special II about 15 years ago at a local guitar shop in Dalton Ga. where I was living at the time. I've had many guitars come and go over the years but this is one i just will not part with. It plays and sounds just as good as my Gibson SG Special. And after 15 yrs of playing it, I have had no problems with it. That's just my 2 cents worth. Thought it might help someone.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

With this LP special, I have now bought 4 epis from MF, Very pleased with all . . this one has some sharp fret ends at the bottom of the finger board, no big deal. For my recording I prefer the EPI LP silver burst (it does have a little better action at the hi end) and a little better tone, the 335 dot is great and the Jumbo EC 220 cannot be beat for tone, electronics and action.
I've been playing for 51 years and have a VR Fender Strat, and a vintage '73 tele but my goto guitars are the EPIs, simple as that . . .. .

I am a beginner and don't really know much about guitars but for the price this is a really good one. It sounds and feels great. I have only had it for a few weeks and have had one problem so far. I have experienced the fret buzz that a lot of people have been talking about. But I think that can be fixed with a little YouTube help or a good guitar pro. All things considered, I think this is a good guitar for a first purchase. I have no complaints.

I've been self teaching myself guitar for about a year on an acoustic, (Also from musician's friend, the Jasmine by Takamine, awesome!)and decided I wanted to work with an electric as well. Based on the reviews and price, I bought the special ii and fell in love. It has an amazing sound and is very easy to play. Action feels right and as a beginner I can say I'm very much looking forward to learning guitar with this beauty! All black, can't go wrong.

I'm primarily a bassist and have been seriously playing since the mid-70s, but I've also played guitar and I can't count all the guitars I've played. This is an amazing instrument. If you need something to play, buy this. No, it's not perfect in terms of tone, but you won't find more bang for the buck anywhere. It is perfect for beginners.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

Serveral years ago I bought a Dot Studio and have played it quite a lot so the Les Paul was irresistable to me when I found it on sale. I like the simplified control scheme of these instruments and the tone is excellent. The first thing I did with the Les Paul was to raise the saddle pickup about 1/4" to get a little more output. The neck is really comfortable for me and the guitar seems to be almost perfectly intonated out of the box. I used it last night at a band rehearsal through a Floor Pod Plus into a board and it worked great! Can't wait to get it out on a gig and blazing through my Fender Deluxe.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Electric Guitar:

I bought one off these in the Heritage Cherry Burst awhile back when I decided if I was ever going to get serious about playing guitar, I needed a halfway decent guitar or I was never going to improve. I decided on the Special II because of the great price and all the positive reviews. I was very impressed with the finish on the one I ordered, it has the looks and feel of a much more expensive guitar. I changed out the strings to a set of Ernie Ball's and lowered the action a bit, and I was quite happy with it but not quite satisfied. The pickups had really nice crunch but were on the muddy side. I later bought a used Special I with p90 pickups, which sounds fantastic. After playing the Special I for awhile, it was harder to live with the sound of the Special II's pickups, so I decided to try a couple of easy upgrades. First, I soldered in a .022 paper-in-oil capacitor to replace the stock capacitor, then replaced the plastic nut with a new Graph Tech nut. All I can say is .........Wow! What an amazing difference! The pickups now have the clarity they were lacking and I don't want to put it the guitar down. It has turned a very good guitar into a great guitar. The upgrades were super cheap, and were worth triple what it cost. When you strum the guitar unplugged now it just rings.I will probably replace the tuners eventually, but it stays in tune pretty well. I'm not saying you have to do these upgrades to enjoy this guitar, I just highly recommend them if you find the tone lacking. Without upgrades, this guitar is still worth more than the asking price. If you can handle some pretty basic skills, you can bring out it's real potential.I now own three Epiphone's and am still amazed at the sound , workmanship, and value they offer. My next guitar will probably be another Epi.
