OVERVIEW

A mahogany body, a hard maple top and Gibson's '57 pickups with series/parallel switching.

Epiphone's long friendship with innovator Les Paul dates back to the late '30s and early '40s when Les and fellow guitarists such as Charlie Christian and George Barnes were at the forefront of jazz guitar. Epi Stathopoulos and Les were good friends and Epi would let Les use the Epiphone factory on 14th Street in New York City at night after hours to experiment on guitar and pickup designs. This also was the era when Les, inspired by the stinging sustain heard in electric steel guitars, began dreaming of making a solidbody guitar. He built his first, the legendary "Log," at the Epi factory in 1941. Over the years, Les continued to work closely with Epiphone luthiers, reviewing new product ideas and offering suggestions.

Now, the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus honors Epiphone's friendship with Les by combining his classic design features with legendary Epiphone quality and value with the added power of Gibson USA '57 Classic humbuckers. But this guitar is not just about recreating the "old," it's also about looking ahead, just as Les himself continued to do throughout his lifetime. Using 4-conductor pickup wiring, Epiphone has added two push/pull tone pots to allow for series/parallel pickup switching. The result is a Les Paul with all the standard sounds plus a huge palette of tonal possibilities at your fingertips. The Les Paul Tribute Plus also features Epiphone's famous built-to-last hardware and electronics including a U.S. Switchcraft 3-way toggle, Mallory-150 tone capacitors, Epiphone StrapLocks, 16:1 ratio premium Grover locking tuners, and a premium hardshell case.

I wanted a Les Paul model guitar, but can't afford a Gibsonn. I did some research on the Epi Les Paul Tribute and liked what I read. Let's get right to it, starting at the top: It has Grover locking tuners and so far I have not had any tuning problems. It has a cool truss rod plate that reads "Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus". The only thing I didn't like was the thickness of the finish on the back of the head stock that prevented me from deciphering the serial number that is stamped into the wood. Luckily the serial number was on the shipping box in two places. The neck is the "C" shape thin neck and is easy to play. I have small hands and it fits me perfectly. The strings are .10 - .46. The body is real mahaogany and is not chambered. The top cap is real carved maple, not a laminate. I got the midnight ebony color and it is a tranparent finish to showcase the flamed maple finish of the wood. The only problem with the finish is it appears to have two small sand marks made before the finish was applied. Not very noticeable and it makes my guitar different from anyone else's. The pickups are USA Gibson 1957 humbuckers. I play through two amps - a Fender Twin Reverb reissue and a Fender Frontman 25. The sound from the humbuckers are amazing. I get the full, mellow sound through the clean channel which is what I was looking for. The tone pots are push/pull to take the humbuckers out of parallel to make it sound like single coil pickups. The knobs are black speed style knobs and look great with the black finish. I put the guitar on an electronis scale and it registered 8.6 pounds. The only thing I don't care for is cosmetic in nature. I don't care for the creme pickup rings and the creme selector switch plate. That is a personal preference and nothing to do with the fit, finish or performance. For all intents and purposes this guitar is a Gibson with an Epiphone headstock. I am really pleased with the effort Epiphone went to for this guitar. I play it every day. This one is a keeper.

When I asked MF rep initially, he said they looked at the guitars before sending them out. Then, it came to me with a broken pot. Called, got return, and asked if this was a common problem with the model and was told NO. Replacement not shipped, called to find order not put in two days later. Then I got a different color since they sold out of the first. No worries- Cherry and Sapphire are both great looking btw. Finally got it again a week after that- same pot is broken on the new guitar, but not shorted like the other so not in need of soldering. I find the replacement on line to see its construction, look under the hood, and see that the one in the guitar had broken into two parts (stem from other piece) and never could have held to the body in its condition. I was able to put the pot together after perusing the internet to see how it should have been assembled in the first place. Be careful to protect the holes with the plastic initially used around them on the outside of the guitar to keep the finish nice when you reinstall the pot. It works fine now, but the USA electronics by Gibson seem to boast a faulty potentiometer that looks allot like inexpensive ones sold online. Others have noted this problem with the pots on this guitar. Two faulty pots in a row does not suggest an isolated problem. All in all this is a pretty nice guitar, but there are quality control issues with some of the minor stuff so it is good if you are handy or do not mind being a regular at the UPS facility in your area. Very nice guitar otherwise-but my experience was not good initially. I will better be able to evaluate it after a more prolonged period of use. I had previously never experienced problems with other Epiphone guitars, and this model is unique and may be worth the effort. In the worst case, if you are handy and can solder a little, worse come to worse, a better quality pot is inexpensive and easy enough to replace should you need to down the road.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

The quality next to my Gibson custom shop 1958 less paul is very comparable. I had to lower the action a little bit and after that it was great. Plays very smooth, great fret ends and frets, absolutely beautiful finish, great sounding Gibson electronicics, lots of tones coming out of this one. I'm having a hard time typing this but I believe it sounds better than my 58 Gibson custom shop. Don't let the name steer you away, this is a real quality guitar handmade in china. I think a skilled guitar craftsman in china can produce just as nice of a guitar as anyone. Check one out, you want be disappointed.

This guitar is a very nice guitar dont get me wrong. It plays amazing and it sounds so good. Howerver musicians friend has made buying this guitar a hassle. First one that came to me was an amazing color but the nobs were broken, it made it unplayable. The second guitar that came to me was intact but was this wierd purple gray color and just looks dull. With some set up its an amazing guitar just not very fond that i got the wrong color.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

So I have a '95 Gibson Les Paul Studio. US Strat. US Tele. for comparison. Ive owned one of the Zakk Wylde Epiphones before. In conclusion this instrument is fine. It sounds like a Gibson, looks like a Gibson, feels like a Gibson, but doesn't cost like a Gibson. I wanted an instrument that looks and plays like a top shelf guitar without the risk of owning a top shelf guitar. Plus I was curious about the different neck profile. This neck is fast and slim. I play with my thumb frequently and making that reach is easy, I also have pretty small hands. The guitar is totally beautiful, lots of tones too with split coil wiring. Sounds killer through my Fender Bluesman and Bassman

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus Electric Guitar:

I recently bought this guitar in the Midnight Ebony color after playing numerous Les Paul standards in the store and not being all that impressed. With this one, I immediately felt a difference in the way it played and felt. The setup felt perfect, with a nice pop to the strings and smooth, effortless feel when playing up and down the neck. The color was so unique to me with its dark finish that reveals the flame top through the tones of a greenish grey when held to the light - definitely something you don't see everyday. I know I'm still not sick of looking at it, not to mention playing it for hours on end. All the other colors look great too, but this one drew me the most. I also like the absence of a pickguard, which I think would take away from the aesthetics of a guitar like this. When I looked up the specs I was sold: Gibson USA '57 pickups, solid mahagony body and a real solid maple flame top - this is a sweet guitar through and through and a huge step above your average Epi Les Paul.

An amazing instrument. Finely crafted and perfect in it's detail. Gibson 1957 pickups are creamy and smooth, yet they can growl like an angry tiger. This truly is everything you want in a guitar at any price. I dressed mine up with an Earvana compensated nut, a pick guard and new knobs.

Having owned a few lemons in my day I was cautious when considering this guitar. I read the reviews, i checked the Epi's web site, and listen to demo's. I compared this to the equivalent Gibson. With a 45 day return policy I took the chance. I DO NOT REGRET THE DECISION. I bought the Midnight Ebony. Beautiful and classy with amazing tone. Give it a chance. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I had been waiting for another Epiphone LP that has been back ordered for the last 5 months. I started checking other options and found this one to have similar specs with a lot of hardware upgrades. So I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Guitar arrived setup pretty good from the factory. Finish was perfect. Beautiful book matched tiger maple top. I got the midnight sapphire model. Played decent out of the box. I checked the setup and changed a few things to my liking. The neck was almost straight and the bridge was set a little high. Truss rod worked smoothly. I lowered bridge and re-set intonation. Plays like a dream. Great tone. The coil splitting feature gives you plenty of tonal options I own a few Gibson LP's and this Epiphone model is every bit as good. A great bargain for a classic guitar.
