Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

first the good, I love the sounds enough to keep it! The guitar has sweet tones and though the electric tones don't shock me the acoustic tones do. I have a Les Paul with an LR Baggs T bridge, this nanomag kills it. That being said in fairness the nano is on a semi acoustic guitar! Next the finish. On mine, there are no finish flaws, nothing funky going on, I love it, its gorgeous! The feel, it feels great to me, having always played smaller body electrics, I love having a semi acoustic in this size! It really will work accompanying a vocalist. I'd always rather have a good acoustic for this but this things shockingly able!!! The Les Paul isn't...

The USB and software download all worked, fun to play around with... sort of a novelty but I think it's fun : )

now the not so good, the factory set up stinks... yeah I know it always does ; )

    Dreamy Blue

    By Andrew Beynon

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

    Pros)
    1) This guitar makes peoples jaws drop. It is very pretty.2) Since it is the Ultra series the acoustic option is still a nice feature. If you are not in a huge stage band, and dont have time to change guitars from electric to acoustic, this makes it easy.
    3) It sounds great, it came set up well in my opinion.

    Cons
    1) As some have said, the paint job is a little funky in places. When you look inside the F hole you may see a build up of pelhem blue paint, or drips. Its okay for me though. Even if they just painted over another color or something... it still looks great and no one will notice unless you tell them.
    2) The hard shell Case for this is very hard to find. Apparently the " Epiphone Deluxe ES 339 Electric Guitar Case " is the correct case for this. I still dont have the case i need. It was out of stock for a pretty long time.

    Disappointed

    By David Kerzer

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

MF's customer service was great. RMA was issued with no hassles.
The guitar works and sounds pretty good. The two problems I ran into where that the neck is unstable. Any pressure from the back or the front of the neck will change the pitch like a wammy bar. Also, the guitar hangs strangly from the strap: it is neck heavy and it hangs away from your body.
Low rating due to the factors mentioned above.
    At $800 I expect more.

    Good Utility Guitar

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

Good looking guitar. Good versitility. Good features. If right for your application, and you're up for a bit of tweaking, highly recommended.
Versitile guitar with the Nanomag pickup for acoustic sounds. USB direct is nice for practice with the iPad through the camera connector or recording direct to PC. Tuner on the bridge pickup is very handy. I play smaller gigs with good variety of pop, jazz, and rock - good all around guitar for that application. More features packaged in one gutar than I've seen. The neck was a bit chunkier than I expected, but still very playable.
I expected I would rush to upgrade the humbuckers, but was surprised the sound was adequate. Will probably upgrade one day, but no rush. The setup needs a bit of work, but what you would expect at this grade. Had a plug come off the circuit board, but not difficult to fix. Crooked knob, rough finish around the f-hole - but, all stuff you might expect at this grade. Minor tweaking, but played well enough out of the box.
Good set of features for the money. Aligned well with expectations otherwise. I caught a sale, so I feel like it was a good investment, but would still consider a good buy at list price.

    A Short Review

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

Taking a small bit off rating for MF not carrying the case for it (at time of purchase). Be sure this is the type of guitar you want, it does not have the bigger sound of an ES335 style, but it has a nice airy sound of it's own. The pickups are weaker than most humbuckers I've heard, but that may be a good thing on this instrument. It sounds good through a nice Fender tube amp, and can easily get a chunky rock n' roll sound. Have fun.
I have a lot of higher-end guitars, but always loved low-cost Epiphones. This is a decent guitar for the price. It is not fair to compare with the Gibson ES-339 (which I also own), but that is twice the money. I like the built-in tuner, and the ShadowMag is unique, if not a great acoustic sound. It does give some versatility. The rear body controls are different, not sure if that is a plus or minus really. The neck is not super slim nor too fat, at least for my preference. I also love how the plastic tuners look.
Finish is beautiful. It matches my Toyota Highlander.Set up out-of-box was terrible, but that is normal in a budget guitar. B-string was dead, action and intonation were off. The knobs are all set on crooked, I have know idea why this is such a hard thing to get straight in China. Anyway, basically needed a good set-up. So you will have a little extra cost there if you don't do it yourself.
Good deal for the all the features.

    like getting a free acoustic

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

Innovative electronics allowing acoustic and humbucker tones at the same time or alone coming from one guitar. I think this is where the T5 tried to go and this guitar does it better tha a T5. The humbucker pickups sound cose to actual Gibsons. The pickup ring with tuner is way cool. The guitars fit and finish was acceptable. More attention should be paid to fret finish and polish. Playability is excellent, very slim neck. If you like meaty baseball bat necks you won't like this. No matter how innovative the electronics are, the ground loop hum while using both jacks is annoying. Should come with a gigbag at least and a HSC would be better.
This guitar's regular features consists of the cool limited edition color, Les Paul sized single f hole ES-335 body, pair of humbucker pickups made using the same Gibson pick up materials under Gibson PAF specification producing PAF sounding pickups. Now toss in a nanomag acoustic pickup mounted as part of the 22nd fret with active electronics. This gives you a total of a 3 pickups.

Two 1/4" jacks provide humbuckers+nanomag or one for the nanomags and one for the humbuckers allowing you to plug into two amps at once. Amp one being the nanomag amp and Amp two being the humbucker amp. Using both jacks at once introduced annoying ground loop hum going into my Super Reverb and Egnator Renegade head. I find it less noisy to use the nano+humbucker jack alone.

USB port for pluging directly into your DAW mixer or amp console on your PC with instructions for downloading drivers and software. I have yet to try/use this feature, but I predict a noisy connection based on experience using both 1/4 jacks at one time.

The bridge humbucker pickup ring provides visual confirmation of which pickups are in use AND a tuner. The tuner part is so cool, this will soon be standard on all electric guitars BUT the leds are bright. Using tuner turns off all signals to jacks acting like a kill switch.
I wish manufacturers would allow users to decide if they want a pickguard. I hate them and always remove them, so now I have some finish checking around those 2 screw holes. The neck is fast and feels almost like a 30/60 profiled Gibson neck. I did lower the action a bit and raised the humbuckers a little closer to the strings.

The nanomags are incredible in producing acoustic tones. It even changes the sound of your strings from nickle to bronze, just amazing how it does that. When used with the humbuckers it sounds like two guitars are playing especially if you use both 1/4 jacks into two amps.
If this really becomes a limited edition and only a few made in this color this could be a killer deal. The ultra 339 is available with same electronics in different colors. a 9 volt battery is required to power the nanomags, tuner and pickup in use indicator. The ground loop hum introduced while using both 1/4 jacks effectively render this a useless feature. The ability to switch between an acoustic and a humbucker at a button push without changing guitars has some value but could also be provided by an fx pedal. The pickup ring tuner is incredibly convenient and I predict will become a standard on all electric guitars going forwards.

Nice 339 for the money, but know what you're buying...

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

In general, with a few tweaks, cleaning, and a pro setup, this guitar can be used for gigging, and the built-in tuner and NanoMAG make it a lot more flexible than a regular semi-hollow. I don't expect it to become a museum piece, it's a guitar for playing, not for collecting, but I do enjoy it and will probably keep it around for awhile.
The Shadow Electronics NanoMAG pickup and built-in tuner are very cool. I've never had a guitar with a built-in tuner before, and it's quite a luxury. I'm considering installing this pickup ring tuner on several other guitars. The NonoMAG doesn't really sound like an acoustic to my ears - more like super-twangy telecaster, but it is a great option and gives the guitar much more tonal flexibility.

The stock alnico pickups sound fine, but some will want to upgrade them to Gibsons, Seymour Duncan, or some other boutique type. This will be much trickier than a standard ES pickup and wiring upgrade because the circuitry is much more complicated by the NanoMAG controls. On the plus side, the NanoMAG cavity provides internal access not available on normal 339s which will make modifications much easier, assuming you know what you're doing.
The Pelham Blue model is the second Epiphone Ultra 339 I've bought from Musician's friend. The first one was a standard VSB Ultra 399 which I had to send back because it developed cracks on both sides of the neck at the nut after one string change. This "Limited Edition" version seems to be a slightly better built instrument, and it has nicer rosewood figuring in the fretboard and the finish work was a little more consistent.

In any case, the PB unit played pretty well out of the box although the bridge intonation needed tweaking and nut slots filed down to keep cowboy chords in tune. Also cleaned the excess fretboard dye off with Naptha and treated it with lemon oil. No big deal if you're a guitar tinkerer like me, but if not, expect to get this guitar setup by a pro tech before you take it home. I will eventually replace the cheap plastic nut with bone or graphite anyway, so not a deal-killer for me.

At the current street prices, I'd expect a guitar that needed nothing, so I'm giving it a 5 in this category.
I had no illusions that for the street price I would be getting Gibson Custom Shop quality, but in this price range, I did expect better quality control on both Ultras. The VSB unit had pretty poor workmanship, including buffing compound left on the inside of the horns, sloppy pickup routs and bits of loose wood inside the pickup cavities. Both guitars had excess fretboard dye which will turn your fingers black. This is common with a lot of the cheaper Epiphones, not sure why they can't clean this off before shipping at this price point. For these reasons I have knocked some points off in value.

Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar in Pelham Blue

    By Mike Waddell

Comments about Epiphone Ltd Ed Ultra-339 Electric Guitar:

    Fantastic value for the money!
Very impressive guitar for the price. The Pelham Blue is awesome. You wont find it on Epi's web site.
The quality is sub par in my opionion. The finish around the f hole and the neck fit is rough. But for the price who's complaining.
This is one of the most versitle guitars you can buy for the money IMO. I've had the Gibson Robot and several Fenders but this guitar can play any style of music.
