Epiphone

An excellent choice for aspiring guitarists to work on their chops without killing their bank account.

The easy-to-afford dreadnought Epiphone PR-150 is the perfect instrument to get started on. It has classic looks, great tone, and is made to be road tough. Like all worthy acoustic guitars, it begins and ends with tonewoods, and the PR-150 Epiphone chose a select spruce top and mahogany body for a classic sound that's balanced, clear, and will only get better with age and lots of playing. The rosewood bridge and synthetic bone saddle are a perfect match for the resonant profile of the select spruce top. The vintage-style soundhole is supported by a tortoiseshell-style pickguard with the '60s era "E" logo. The SlipTaper 25.5" scale mahogany neck has a rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, a 12" radius, a 1.68" nut, premium die-cast 14:1 tuners, and the classic '60s era Sloped Dovewing headstock. The Epiphone’s all-nickel hardware will last as long as you play the guitar and the PR-150 comes in two color finishes, Natural (NA) and Vintage Sunburst (VS). Choose the finish you want in the drop down menu above.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

This was my second purchase from Musician's Friend and I continue to be impressed with the quality, price and condition of their products. My Epiphone PR-150 (Vintage Sunburst) sounds as great as it looks...and it looks AWESOME! Holds tune after lengthy jammin', excellent craftsmanship and the finishing detail is what you would expect from a much more expensive guitar. I hesitated to get the Sunburst finish, now it is one of the things I like best about it. It's so easy to play and sounds so good it actually inspires me to practice! Great right out of the box. My brother suggested some high quality strings, but I can't imagine it sounding better. Quite a score for [$]

Purchased this guitar from MF on a recommendation from phone rep. Guitar arrived and when I brought it in for a setup, the tech told me the frets from 9 on down were too high and strings buzzed down there. I was told that it wasn't stored properly and the fretboard was dried and the frets were popping up. MF was very good about doing an advance exchange, sending a n/c return label as well, and sent out a replacement same day with next day delivery at no extra charge. The replacement did indeed arrive the next day. However, this one was even worse than the first one. The fretboard was so dry that it was turning white. The frets were again too high in the same places and there was a lot of string buzz. The strings had dust and corrosion spots on them even though this appeared to be a brand new item. Again, bad storage. The MF rep and I decided that it was time to give up on the Epiphone and go with a Fender DG-60 instead. Again MF was very good about issuing a return label but sent the Fender by regular 3 day shipping. And I had to hassle returning two defective guitars. But UPS made that relatively easy.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

As a level four project, this was a steal. Granted, as delivered it was unplayable. (The strings lay flat on the frets from halfway up the neck.) But after some judicious work with a file, shimming the saddle, and tightening the truss rod, this thing plays and sounds beautifully. It's also--I got the sunburst model--quite handsome to look at. This is actually the second one of these that I've bought. The first was a level three project that had a small nick in the rim of the soundhole, but was otherwise nearly perfect as delivered. I gave that one to my brother as a birthday gift. This one, though, I think I'll keep. As a knock-around but handsome and good-sounding guitar, it is already a favorite, second only to my aj220sce. It has a BIG luscious sound, and incredible sustain that absolutely belies its price-point. The only small criticism I have is that the tuners aren't the best, but they do the job and keep the instrument in tune. For the money, I don't believe you will find a better guitar.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I've been playing guitar unprofessionaly for over 40 years. And have owned several Epiphones. One of my 1st guitars was an FT-120 I purchased new in 1975. I have since acquired better/more expensive guitars (Martins). I purchased my PR-150VS on impluse from a local classified ad because it was cheap. With the idea of possibly usuing it as a camping guitar. After some clean u and addition of new strings (Martin Lifespan light), I was amased at how much I like it. Not as loud or rich tone as my Martins, but sounds pretty good to my ears. And the best part IMO is that plays very well. I very much look forward to playing it on our camping trips. And play it often at home as well. I would recommend the Epiphone DR-150 for any beginner or someone who wants an inexpensive 2nd guitar.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

The only thing I can say negative about this guitar is that there was a crusty coating on the frets. Some of it wore away from use and the rest I took off with a dull piece of scotchbright when I changed the strings. This is a nice bit of workmanship and a great value.

As a rank beginner, I was looking for an inexpensive starter guitar. I'd say that the PR-150's appearance and performance far outpace its price. Looks and sounds great. I've very pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I have to say first that Musicians Friend is great to work with. I tried 2 different guitars and both of them never should have made it past quality control for Epiphone. Most of the issues were cosmetic and set up issues but for the guitar to wear the sticker personally set up by Epiphone it does not speak well fro their quality control and their packing department. For the money it could be a great little guitar if Epiphone would step up their quality in their quality control department

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I wanted an inexpensive guitar to just play around on the porch with. Read reviews about fret problems on this guitar, but assumed they did not know how to adjust. The guitar arrived with dust on the fret board and very dry. Possibly a storage problem, but the same problem others had. Could not get the fret buzz out and the third fret was just too high (try to play an F# on the 1st string and get a G note). Either this is a recurring problem with this guitar, or I got the guitar that others returned to MF. I have been a very good customer of MF (bought 3 quality guitars and a ukulele in the last year and a half before this one) and this was the first problem, but I was not happy getting a guitar with the same problems others have had. I was disappointed with MF for the first time in a long relationship. Don't buy this guitar!
