Buy knowing it will play better when modified. I bought guitar after trying out first and checking neck etc... I changed pick-ups, tuners, nut and filed G saddle. I love the weight and basswood tone for certain songs. Before you write a review and make yourself look silly.... I've read a ton of them! LEARN how to set up a guitar. This guitar plays as well as, if not better than some of my guitars that cost 5x as much! Make adjustments and mods to it .... the tone is great. I ALWAYS play an electric W/O an amp before I buy to "hear" tone first. This has it with my S.Duncan JH4/2 PU! If you are willing to put a little extra cash and time into it - it is well worth the play. The weight of it alone is worth the extra effort. BUY Dan Erlewiens book "how to make you electric guitar play great" you can do it yourself. I replied no cons because I bought with intention of modifying to my liking.

I got this as my first guitar, and getting into guitar i couldn't have been happier. Two years later though, now that i know how to play and have played more guitars I am not as impressed with this guitar.First of all the finish is not what the picture implies, what it looks like is a wooden guitar, that has been dipped in resin, it feels like baked on suran wrap. Although it looks decent new, its shows all finger prints and scratches. Then if you bump it into the wall the finish is like a brittle shell and cracks. Also the wood is soft and dings very easily. It sounds ok, right now i have it running through a Peavy Rage 15 Watt amp, which is also crappy, but I have a Rocktron v50d amp on its way and I will follow up when I test it on that amp. Despite what previous review say, these pickups are wired very hot, they have a high output, which can be good and bad.The tuners are decent, I have to tune it ever couple of days. The volume and tone knobs are the cheapest they could get away with, and the shaft on my volume know keeps coming loose, causing problems, and when I apply pressure to the top of the know, I loose all out put from the guitar. And the neck is one thing that i failed to recongnise when i purchased this, first the neck is set to far into the body making the last 3 or so frets virtualy unacessable. Second the back of the neck has the same baked on suran wrap texture which is not to smooth and your had knid of drags on it which can slow you down.Lastley the bridge is poor quality, well its decennt but i have a lot of trouble because the saddle for my third string is defective and it rattle non stop.

the strings it comes with are not the greatest, though they do sound nice

awesome...enough said.
Just picked this up at guitar center. tried out the gibson sg standard and ultimately went towards this because of price and comfort. its really good for the money. Gonna swap out the pickups down the road, but thats a more personal prefrence than anything. I'd recomend this to anyone looking for a good SG
Not bad at all. light weight, smooth neck, good tone, ect.
Pickups arent my taste, but then again im always dissatisfied with stock pickups.

If you want a Great Guitar on a Low Budget - this is the one for you.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

Very Happy with the Guitar- A 10 means, for this price range that this is a great guitar for the value---
If I was reviewing a Gibson or Martin - the numbers for review would be set for the price range of the guitar and what is in the same class of guitars. Well worth all of the pennies I saved.
Nice looks- light weight- I am a Acoustic Man- decided if I got an electric - it could not weigh a ton -like most soild bodies do. Yet still it is soild built. something if it fell I would not expect any damage.
everything perfect - no flaws - everything working well - no complaints
I have played high end Electrics - that do not compare to the looks and sound of this guitar.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I wanted the Gibson SG but is pricey so I decided to give EPI SG a chance. I played both the Gibson and Epiphone SG Special through a Marshall MG50CFX to compare both. The only thing the EPI-SG is missing is a clearer tone and punch that the Gibson SG has but the EPI still has great pick-ups. For the price, you can't beat the EPI-SG Secial as an entry level and/or practicing guitar. Excellent quality, straight easy to play neck, no fret buzz or burrs and get this... STAYS IN TUNE, even after 2 hours of heavy playing!

As with any guitar, always play and inspect it before you buy one. This is the best guitar I have ever purchased at this price!

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I am very happy with this guitar. It came right out of the box pretty well set up. For the masses anyhow.
Took about ten minutes to set up for my preference and intonation was very close right out of the box also. Its very comfortable to play and sounds great. I find myself playing more. I just got it but I can see already that I'm going to grab this one over my others very often. In my opinion you can't get a better guitar for the money.

        An AWSOME GUITAR!!!!!!

        By Lisa Mosely

        from Warner Robins,GA

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

its a great guitar,it has an awsome design,it can be loud and buzz free if you change the original strings,it stays in tune for a long time(which is important for me),and it has a great value!!!!!if you have been looking for a band and just dont have a good eletric guitar then buy this one!!!!ever since i got it ive started a band its nothin big yet but it will be so be lookin out!!!!!!oh and one last time BUY THIS GUITAR YOU WONT BE SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it has awsome features the, nobs actually have a lot of effect unlike most eletric guitars, and the switch don't get me started I don't know if you will have the same effects as I do cause I have a lower priced Ibanez amp so its pretty good but if you got a pretty good amp and you put it on the right sound and then you put the switch on rythm it makes a noise that sounds exactly like sweet child o mine!!!
The quality of the guitar when it came in the package really suprised me. I figured it would be all torn up and the strings would be off and stuff but it wasnt it looks exactly like it does on the picture except its a little bit smaller then you will probably excpect from a sg. The reason why I rated it a 8 is because it makes a buzzing noise if you like to play your amp real loud(like me)and I know its not the amp, but if you asked me just replace the strings I dont know what string wait you're use to so I wont say that part
the value is a steal i see epiphones and gibson sg's all the time in music stores and they're exactly the same size and they can cost more than this, so dont be stupid and buy this guitar!!!!!

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I would only reccommend this guitar for a beginner or student.
Its just too cheaply built for anything but home use or practice.
I had this guitar for 6 months and I though it looked nice and had a good finish but I
thought it was cheaply built and setup up poorly.
The neck flexed alot and had a wierd noise in the lower neck area.
The finish was nice , tuners are cheap and were the kind you can't tighten.
goes out of tune alot and buzzes on e bass string .
It was a fair price compared to guitars in its class I guess
but I'd rather save for a better guitar.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

This guitar... Wow. For the price, you will not find a better buy anywhere. Go ahead, look. I can assure you that if you are just now getting into guitar or you need a guitar to just practice on, this is the best bet for you. The guitar is really a nice, rich apple red. I bought mine before they started including pickguards on them though. However, I like mine without it. If you are going needing a great guitar to lay down some metal riffs on, get this. It will save you a lot of money too. This was my first guitar and I've moved away from the metal scene and am now an acoustic artist. Still, I'm keeping my very first electric guitar! Great guitar!
Not too much. Two basic double-coil humbucker pickups, one tone control, flip switch, and volume control.
Made out of nice wood. Great looking paint. Nice metal tuners. Decent pickups. thin neck (great for metal or rock), nice weight.
Can't get a better guitar at this price range. It's not a Gibson, but it sure is close. In fact, when my friend first saw mine, he thought it was a Gibson. :3 Very cheap, very nice.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

This is the first new guitar I've ever bought although I have an older Fender style axe. First off this was packaged so well I think it would've survived a fall from 11000 feet. Felt incredible to pick it up for the first time. It came with strings and although they are thicker than what I'm used to they are fine for what I'm using it for. I am a true beginner so I'm still learning every thing. It's fun to grab and just finger the chords on even without plugging it in. Color is beautiful ( I got the black ) Service from MF was great. I'm sure there is better out there but for the price at this time it's hard to beat. Well designed. Fine tuning the tune is easy. String to fret board distance is adjustible so if it's a little off it can be corrected. By all means check all this stuff out. The pickups sound good. I've read other reviews that stated stuff about the sound. with my 38 year old ears it sounds good. Great sustains and clear sound. It's actually easier for me to play this than my old Fender style. I've made more progress the last week than the last 2 months. Love it and I'll be looking for other's when I can afford it and my playing is better.

My first impression on opening the packaging was, "What a beautiful guitar!" The finish is perfect, the color is brilliant, and it just plain feels good to play. It feels like an SG without the cost of an SG. I am amazed and VERY pleased at the quality of the instrument for the price. I purchased with the Fender Mustang I and it makes a great starter set for a retired rock and roll drummer who always wanted to play guitar!!

Okay, I've been playing guitar for two years, and do not consider myself an expert. This is my first electric guitar, and I love it. The picture looked great, in real life it is even more awesome. Great color, great finish, looks really solid and well made. Plug it into the amp I bought, a Peavey Vypyr 15, and in my humble opinion, it sounds great, too. I think I got a great deal for a great outfit, and couldn't be more happy with it.

Epiphone SG Special Review (M. Polland)

                  By Michael Polland

                  from Fayetteville AL

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

Overall this is a great choice of guitar to invest in, shred on, and show-off. An awesome guitar at a low price such as this one would be one of the best choices you could make as a musician!
The features of this guitar are obviously a close to classic look but minus a few parts and pieces for the sake of better pricing. All-together this IS most of the same parts as the regular SG except for maybe the dot inlays instead of boxed inlays. For these reasons gave an 8 on features. If someone were to want the more extended guitar in features then they should probably save and invest in the G-400 version of the SG. Other-wise, this is very good for small town players with a slightly lower income.
This guitar might be financially and featurally a step down from the G-400 but it is built and manufactured with the same great quality that you could expect from any Epiphone guitar.
This guitar is actually less valuable in the sense of money but very valuable in the idea that it is a fine instrument at this very low price. I also congratulate the wonderful Musician's Friend internet site for bringing it to such an unbelievably low price and nevertheless ensuring such wonderful quality. All that I guess any musician might say that you would definitely get your money's worth!

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I wanted a backup for performances in case something falls off my 40-year old Strat. I am completely satisfied with the SG-Special. I play through a GT-10 effects box, and the SG-Special's pickups seem to come through very nicely across all frequencies.
At this price a guitar's features are going to be basic, but that's exactly what I wanted. The SG-Special's "killswitch" feature is, uh... well, perhaps added by marketing guys? When I want to "kill" a guitar I just lay my hand on the strings or I turn the volume to zero. Not sure what this feature is for.
If stuff starts falling off over time then I'll have a complaint, but right out of the box everything feels solid and everything works.
The SG-Special tuned well out of the box, and within a day or two it was stable. The neck is easy to play. I get a little buzzing with some fingerings out of the E6 and A5, but I've decided not to adjust that out because it doesn't get picked up and I like how close to the neck the strings are. To get a "10" I'd like to pay even less for this guitar, but don't we all want something for nothing?

I picked this up for my son to give to my grandson, but I realized when I opened it to check it out,I would not mind owning it myself.Nice looking guitar and great sound. I had to look hard to find any cosmetic flaws, and rest assured it is not a true Gibson finish, but nice none the less.

This is a fantastic guitar for the price. If you have someone wanting to learn to play, buy this guitar! I've been looking for a single pickup Gibson SG J for a while. It's very tough to find one and they're all overpriced. I came across this and was blown away by the price. It really rocks and is fun to play! I'll have to set the action, but for now I'm using it as my primary practice guitar.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

This is my first electric guitar. I bought it earlier this year. I did quite a bit of research on guitars before buying one, but I knew in the back of my mind that it had to be this beauty. Unlike other sg models, this guitar is not "neck heavy" because the neck joins the body at the 19th fret, as opposed to other models (22nd fret). This guitar looks awesome with good sounding pickups for the price. I would question using it to perform live because of some minor fret buzz on the B string, but I'm sure that can be alleviated with a proper setup. All in all, there really are no flaws with this guitar, and I strongly recommend it for any fledgling guitarists looking for an awesome-looking guitar with good pickups to boot.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

I bought mine used. The neck had been removed and someone had stripped the upper two screws from holding the neck in place. It was simple to fix.
I used some glue and two wooden match sticks.

Now I have the SG Special for about fifty bucks less than the new price. You can't beat that.

I've bought a few guitars and basses from MF in used condition. There has never been anything wrong with them that I couldn't fix. Now I have a cool SG that is set up for playing slide guitar. Nice big fat tone and I'm happy.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:

This is my first review of anything instrument realted. I've upgraded amps three times since having this guitar because I saw no point in upgrading guitars. To top it all off, my cherry red paint finish still looks great. Buy this guitar you will not be disapointed.
The guitar has a three way pick up, very sturdy switch and two knobs, one for volume other for tone. After 3 years the volume knob became loose but i eventually found out you can slide it right off and tighten the nut which makes it good as new

Overall the strings are fairly close to the fret board and the fret board itself is nice and flat, which is great for playing fast. Yet they are far enough away to avoid string buzzing.

The rythm humbucker puts out a surprisingly warm tone, and treble (lead) humbucker is great for that punchy, punk rock sound.

Changing strings is a piece of cake, and it stays in tune exactly how you would want it too.
This was my first guitar and I've been playing it for 5 years. Overall you couldn't ask for a more reliable guitar for the money. This guitar is light weight and extremely durable.
Over the years I've tried several different guitars for around this price range, as high as a $350 guitar, and couldn't bring myself to spend the money because it didn't feel nearly as good as my Epiphone SG Special. I could only se myself upgrading to another SG Model possibly a Gibson. Epiphone really has a great thing going with this guitar.
