Genuine nylon-string tone, with the ability to plug in.

Instead of the tried and tested combination of a hollow body and sound hole, the SST Classic 1.75 acoustic-electric guitar was developed by Epiphone to combat the inherent feedback problems that threaten acoustic performance at high volumes. In a unique construction coup, this nylon-string guitar boasts a revolutionary solidbody design using a spruce top and mahogany body, combined with computer-designed sound chambers that deliver natural acoustic tone. They don't have conventional sound holes because they don't need them.

The SST Classic 1.75 features a 1.75" nut and unrivaled comfort of a SlimTaper mahogany neck, along with the security of professional classical tuners and a rosewood bridge. This guitar features an SST Classic preamp with active volume and EQ controls, the Shadow Nanoflex bridge pickup to convey the gorgeous nylon-string tone through your amp or PA, and an innovative headphone/amp switch that lets you plug a set of regular headphones into the output jack and practice quietly. Not a piezo, the Nanoflex's unique flexible sensing material features integrated active electronics and picks up not only string vibration but also top and body vibrations as well without the harshness of piezos.

Comments about Epiphone SST Classic 1.75 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I really like my guitar. I have two Epiphone SST 1.75 guitars and play one every day. They rest my hand with the easier nylon strings and have the correct spacing for my steel string guitar work. They are not expensive guitars but are very well made and seem durable. I don't know what they would be like on the road but, the Epiphone tech I talked to uses one for professional gigs and seemed very pleased with it.

If you like Chet Atkins fingerstyle music, you are going to be surprised and very pleased.
This review is for the Epiphone SST 1.75. I purchased my first one because of the nut width and nylon strings. I play a lot of steel string fingerstyle guitar and needed something close to the string spacing with softer strings that would give my fingers a break. This is it. It comes with the Epiphone SST preamp by Shadow and a transducer. The preamp has bass and trebel tone controls and volume. They work well. It also has a switch that will let you plug a headset into the 1/4 inch jack and bypass an amp totally. I have found that I like this sound better than the amp sound. These guitars have the Gibson adjustable truss rod with access through the base of the neck. It comes with an end pin but no front strap button.

You will need a case or gig bag for this guitar. The back end heaviness makes it a little precarious on a stand. The ECACS case is OK - if expensive.
The body of the guitar is very heavy and had some minor dings that were factory installed and finished over. The overall quality seems excellent. The binding is neat and well done. The gold colored tuners are very inexpensive but work well. The tuner string barrels were discolored, could be cleaned, and don't show. My SST had polishing residue on the fingerboard but, it came off. The rosette appears to be a decal and the 'sound hole' is a plastic insert. The fiinish is very smooth and well applied. The guitar has a nice final appearance.

The preamp and transducer work as advertised. They use a 9 volt battery that is supplied along with an amp cable. The preamp was installed slightly off center but, that has not affected its performance. I have found that tone and volume controls on both the guitar and amp are a little overkill so, I have set the preamp in the center and control both of these functions from the amp.

These are the only classical guitars I have that don't squeek when you tune them. Intonation seems good. The setup was what I wanted (steel string guitar setup). The strings are close to the fingerboard and you can snap them because they are close and soft. The frets are smooth and level. There is no buzz anywhere that I have found.
Gibson/Epiphone tech service says this guitar was designed and built with lots of input from Chet Atkins. This configuration is the first they made for him and works as well as that original guitar. It has the unmistakable sound you hear from his music. I think the guitar is well worth the price if not on sale. A sale price makes this a really great deal. Considering the quality and the really great sound, you cannot go wrong.

Comments about Epiphone SST Classic 1.75 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Nice solid body guitar. Only complaint is no strap button on the upper bout. Sound through sound system is great, true nylon string sound. As always this site is fabulous. Even though I'm 600 miles from Kansas City, my shipment arrives in one day. Can't imagine what next day shipment would be like. Maybe it shows up before I order it?

Review of Epiphone SST Classic

Comments about Epiphone SST Classic 1.75 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I paid $349 for it. If the saddles and the neck tension had been done right by "Number 26" at Epiphone, would have given it a 10.
When I received the guitar (order# S09002589) on February 9th, I was not expecting a $349 Kirk Sand. Nonetheless, when I unpacked the guitar, I noticed three things on the back of the headstock: (1) made in Indonesia, (2) serial number, 1001230925, and (3) a sticker reading "100% inspected and set up in the USA by 26". Then, I plugged it in and did a little picking. I kid you not. The bridge saddle was so tall that I could slide a Number 2 lead pencil across the neck, under the strings, at the 12th fret, and the strings were still not touching the pencil!! It looked like a nylon-string dobro. I actually did some sliding around with an old Coricidin bottle. The neck was seriously out of alignment. I sensed that the guitar was going to sound great after the saddle was cut down to the correct height. I did it myself. My gut instincts were right. Now the guitar sounds beautiful, through my BOSS DD-3 Digital Delay Pedal, and my Line6 Spider IV 30 amp. I am trying out several different brands and different tensions. So far, the best sound for single-note runs and melodies is D'Addario Pro Arte' EJ45 Normal Tension, Silver-Plated Wound, Clear Nylon. This is a work-in-progress. I'll keep you updated. In the meantime, send "26" out to the warehouse and re-examine the saddles he signed off on. If MY SST Classic had arrived with correct saddle-height, and a neck in alignment, I would have rated the guitar a solid 10, and told all my thumb-picking friends to get one. Ed-In-Houston.
Fit and finish were good. Bridge saddle was too high.
Probably will not be a collectable due to problems with the saddles.
