With guitars i have discovered after over 25 years of playing that, they are like shoes..... when you put on a well made good feeling pair, you know when you have a winner.... same thing applies with guitars to me, when you get a good one in your hands and play it, you either love or hate it. i have owned MANY brands of guitars over the years, from "beginner" guitars up to guitars, all of various styles. the esp ltd ec401vf in tobacco burst guitar is my 1st ever from the brand, and was listed on musicians friend as in mint condition and at a GREAT price as well. for a guitar with a mahogany body, flame maple top, earvana nut, grover tuners seymour duncan pickups, how they make it with these parts at this price confuses me... nonetheless, it arrived with what i can only assume was VERY heavy gauge strings and fret buzz all over. fit and finish was perfect all over and trust me, this was my 1st time buying used gear here and am very impressed. after a good string change to some ernie ball 9s and leting it acclimate to normal temps (it was a high of 20 degrees the day it arrived) i played it. then played it some more.... now my hands hurt alot... because i cant seem to keep them off this thing. in a world full of les pauls that this guitar was designed to compete with, you would have to pay well over $2000 to get the features, feel, and sounds this guitar emits. this is not my first rodeo, gibsons are wonderful instruments, but this guitar proves, you dont have to pay over $2000 for a properly built professional guitar that can easily cover any style you play. the pickups are incredible and the guitar performs flawlessly. i play everything from light jazz to black label society and it has no problem keeping up. pickups are very responsive. these things are in the used category now as esp has updated them with dimarzio pickups this year, get one of these used before they are gone! yes they are that good. cant say anything wrong about this thing, esp and china made guitar factories have proven they have outdone usa made guitar companies with instruments like these. if your brainwashed by brand names, blindfold test it, bet youll be surprised. im a fan of buying american made goods, but not a fan of overpaying, if your like me, check this thing out before they are gone.

I bought this guitar reading all these great reviews and knowing that esp is a reliable brand but out of the box the guitar fret buzzed louder than a hive. It was too much, the action was okay but still a little out of shape it got me really ticked off so I ended up selling it.

    ESP Does It Again

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

This is my fourth ESP LTD guitar and it didn't disapoint. I was able to pick this axe up for a song in the used section on MF. In my opinion MF could have sold this as new because of the almost non existent defect they specified. Anyway, the guitar looks and plays fantastic. The Duncans are a favorite of mine. I use them in most of my gutiars. I don't care for EMG's at all. In fact I removed them from the V401 I have. The neck is fast, action is low as can be and it performs great. I have a couple bands and one plays metal and the other classic rock covers and this guitar can do both very well. The flame top is beautiful, frets dressed properly and the grover tuners provide worry free tuning. I have 2 Gibson LP's, 76 Explorer and a 85 V so I think I am qualified to say the bang for your buck is with the ESP LTD line. The chunk you get from a Paul is there with this guitar. Though a cranked Marshall this guitar could inspire many a riff writer. ESP plain rules....

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

This guitar is amazing value for the money, believe me, I've owned just about everything. This one is equal to any Gibson out there, with WAY better grover tuners, much better flame top, the quality is fantastic. Gibson is way overpriced, all you're buying is a name! I've owned the EC 1000 as well,(4 of them), and they are great too. This one has a nice thick body without the belly cut, and the sustain with the Duncans is killer. Buy this before they figure it out and raise the price!!

If you are looking for a les paul style guitar without shelling out two grand, this is the guitar to buy. The pictures do not do this item justice. The build quality is superb. Flawless out of the box. The JB provides plenty of saturation and bite, but still comes through clear. Gibson quality at a budget price.

Just a kick-butt guitar all around, I love the jb/59 combo. I sing and play heavy original music in a gigging band. One of the greatest things about this guitar is just how solid and well built it is. The pickups have the power at hand to tear it up - without all the feedback and noise from knockoffs. Buy it,if I lost mine, I would buy it all over again!

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

I own an ec 401vf in with the TSB finish, and i must say it is amazing. crazy sustain, awesome tones/harmonics, and the most versatile pickup combo I've seen. I play everything from metal to shred to church music, and with a quick adjustment, you can play w/e you want. combine it with the 300 watt line 6 hd147 head and cab, and you have an amazing combo. that, and you don't have to be a cookie cutter guitar player and own an over priced 'gibson' or epiphone. as far as playing it for metal, it might be a stretch, i prefer my other ESP's with EMG combos, but for ANYTHING else, this guitar will leave everyone satisfied and smiling. The mahogany body sounds THICK and full bodied, especially when you turn up the gain. playing up on the neck is easy, and with the S.D. pickups, its super clean, and full. You will not get a 'tinny' cheap sound out of this thing. Plus the grover tuners and earvana are awesome. icing on the cake.bottom line: its fast, dirty and clean at the same time, and it looks awesome. DO NOT waste your cash on a gibson or fender. ESP and LTD's quality far surpasses.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

I first ordered a Schecter Hellraiser Special - Great looking guitar, set up did not impress me. The sound despite EMG's was horrible, so it went back. Next I tried a Dean ML, as I liked the shape of the Explorer. I found it to be top heavy and the pickups were so-so, and it went back. Now the return shipping was taking it's toll on me. I own a 70 Les Paul Custom and while I was looking for something different I saw the LTD 401VF. I wanted to preserve my Les Paul and have another guitar that I could use daily. Let me say that I was not disappointed. Third time was a charm! Excellent pickups, even better that my Les Paul. Great finish and of course a well balanced guitar. I am more than pleased and I am sure you will be as well.

This is among my favorite guitars I've ever played. I honestly prefer this guitar over some Gibsons and other Les Paul style guitars. The EC-401VF features Seymour Duncans instead of the active EMG pickups in the EC-401. Both sound great but you can typically get a little more variety with these pickups.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

I own and play regularly a USA PRS Custom 24. I LOVE that guitar. I have been trying to find a good singlecut for my collection. I have tried and owned a Gibson Les Paul Standard, Gibson Les Paul Traditional, Gibson Les Paul Studio's, PRS Singlecut's... None of them really struck a chord with me (pun intended) and I sold some of them.

Since I was happy with my PRS and figured I had an upper end US made guitar, I'd branch out and try a mid-line overseas made guitar. I tried some Epiphones (blah), PRS SE's (pretty good, but lacking something) and this LTD.

I certainly am glad. I am utterly impressed by this guitar. This guitar is maybe a small step down in quality from my US PRS. The fretwork and details on the PRS are second to none, but this guitar is amazing in comparison.

This guitar looks absolutely stunning. I have the transparent black. It looks better than the Gibson's I tried. The cost is less than the Gibson Studio's, but, and this is just my opinion, it has way more features and tone than those guitars. Out of the two Studio's I have owned, one of them was just terrible in quality and was sold shortly after purchasing.

Fretwork is superb for an overseas guitar. Could be a tad better, but better than the non Plek'd Gibsons I've had. Neck feels great. A tad bit thicker than my PRS, but still "thin" and amazingly playable. Pickups sound amazing and don't muddy up like the Burstbuckers do. Volume/Tone knobs are smooth and adjust easily.

Only bad thing I can say about this guitar is that the out-of-the-box setup is pretty bad. Nothing a simple at-home setup can't fix. Restring it, clean it up, fix up the action, adjust intonation and you're set. My guitar came pretty dirty. Out of the box, the first time I played it, my fretting fingers were black. A lot of fretboard cleaner and one white rag turned black, and it was all cleaned up and ready to be oiled. Problem solved.

I really hope ESP continues to make this guitar for quite some time. I love ESP's with passive pickups. This one is the best they make.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

My second guitar and I love the glossy feel/look. But because of that, it gets dented way too easily. A little tap or bump into the wall, chair, table, amp or anything will deform or chip it. The frets seemed more sturdier than the ones on my ESP M-100FM but they weren't as smooth feeling. The neck is thin which is great. Everything was all properly set, only adjustments needed maybe raise the action to your liking since it comes preset as low as possible. I like the sustain on it, plays metal to a certain extent, great for rock. Clean is good, works well with amp or digital processing unit. They come with 9's, you can try putting on a set of 10's without needed to adjust the truss rod. Right now I'm sad that it has tiny dents and deformations here and there. Nothing someone would be able to see unless you took your finger and ran over the glossy surface of the guitar. I like the inlays, my guitar came without the "Seymour Duncan" printed on my pickups, looks better in my opinion. If you're worried about the pickups, it's great for what you're paying. The guitar itself was heavy for me to adjust to, I prefer playing it sitting down since It's only been my 6~7 month playing guitar. I got the Cherry Burst and it is stunning! Buy it now if you want to rock out and still be able to play your favorite metal riffs! Heck, even solo too!

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

For the price, you can't beat this guitar. Great pickups and action. There will be some minor flaws. There will probably be minor binding flaws and some finish lapping over the binding in spots (just a tiny tiny bit). None of this is noticeable from more than a couple of feet away, and you'd have to be looking for the flaws. Nothing that will affect playability at all. It sounds great and I'm amazed that I got this kind of guitar for just under 4 bills on sale a while back. Granted, there are better and more precisely made LP style guitars out there, but I haven't seen any that give this much bang for the buck. For reference, I've owned and played Gibsons. The quality in workmanship is pretty close to what you'd find on LP studios and SG standards these days. The fretwork and inlay is actually better than my late 90s LP Studio. Also, I'm fond of the knob configuration. The bridge volume is closest to where your hand is, so easy to manipulate with your pinky.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

Very good feel, excellent pickups, earvana nut, intonation spot on, beautiful top, great tuners, superb action without fretbuzz, great sound.

I have owned many Gibsons(les pauls, an explorer(all time fav), and multiple sgs), Vintage Fenders, and others. This guitar is as well built as any (minus the inlays, I am being VERY picky). It may not say ESP on the front of the headstock, but the sound and feel of the guitar makes you think it does.

The fret ends on the neck are not covered by binding as with some of the higher end gibsons, but are rounded enough that you do not notice them. The neck is smooth and easy to play. It is wide like an explorer with plenty of room to bend.

The flame top is not as thick or three dimensional as some others, but is beatiful nonetheless. The finish was great as well.

The tuners are substantial and do a great job of staying in tune. They also feel very nice without any slack.

The pickups in this guitar sound awesome, full of sustain and resonance. They overdrive nicely through my tube Peavey and sound clear and bell-like when clean.

This is the nicest guitar I have tried anywhere near this price and above. I will not be replacing this with another. It will stay in my collection.

Right out of the box this guitar was in tune despite having been shipped across the country to my doorstep. The low strings were a little too low and were buzzing a little bit but I fixed that with a quick adjustment of the bridge and now it is really slight but playable. I may raise it up a little higher but I don't want to ruin how it plays. Great looking guitar, better than any Les Paul I have picked up and it sounds great.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

This guitar is great. It has all the features I could possible want except the second tone knob. The JB in the bridge sounds amazing for hard rock and metal, and the 59 in the neck is GREAT for blues. I play blues and hard rock/metal in my band and this guitar does it all. I have the tobacco burst model and I have to say that it is a beautiful guitar. I know this is a cliche but it is so much nicer in person, the beautiful heavily flamed maple, cream binding, all perfect. For under $1 000 canadian this guitar is more than worth it. The quality is great, no sharp frets, no extra glue on the inlays and all the electronics are soldered and look really well. One other thing, I compared this guitar to a friends gibson les paul classic antique and this guitar played better, sounded better and looked better. Buy the ltd's version of the les paul, save $$$ and play a really unique playable instrument.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

I own the EC 400VF in Tobacco Sunburst. There's really no difference between the EC 400VF and the EC 401VF. I never got to write a review on the EC 400VF. I purchaced my guitar in July 2007 through my local music shop. I'm glad I did instead of ordering online. The was a issuse with the guitar when it came in. The music shop I deal with has a guitar tech and they check out the guitars and make sure they are set up right before they hand them over to the buyers. The guitar tech found the one pick up had a buzz in it. So they sent it back and order another one. The 2nd guitar had the same problem and so the guitar tech took a look at it and found the pick ups were wired wrong from factory. So they replaced the pick ups with new ones and wired it correctly. After the guitar was in my hands I never had one problem with it. I wanted to get a Gibson Les Paul but coundn't afford those prices. At the time the bass player in my band talked me into looking at ESP. He owned a LTD bass and recommended ESP even over a Epiphone Les Paul. So I looked at the LTD models and came across the EC 400VF. It was what I was looking for at a very low price. If you can't afford the prices of a Gibson les paul this is the way to go. This guitar is right up there with Gibson Les Paul. The SD JB/59 pick ups have great sound and tone and allow you to play almost any kind of music. The neck is fast and with great action. This guitar is built solid and the craftmanship is great. This guitar will last you a life time and the Tobacco Sunburst is awesome. I played someones elses 1983 Gibson Les Paul Standard for about 3 months and that thing was just killing my shoulder. Even though this guitar is heavier then a Strat it doesn't compare to the weight of a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I'm very happy with this guitar. So before go out and spend all that money on a over priced Gibson Les Paul check this guitar out, you will not regret it.

I bought this guitar reading all these great reviews and knowing that esp is a reliable brand but out of the box the guitar fret buzzed louder than a hive. It was too much, the action was okay but still a little out of shape it got me really ticked off so I ended up selling it.

Comments about ESP LTD EC-401VF Electric Guitar:

Let me just say that I have been around the block many times in terms of different guitars and brands. This guitar can be classified as a 'les paul' replica. The seymour duncans are very hot pickups but maintain the vintage sound (i might change the neck pickup to the dimarzio ej custom dp212 for some clean headroom, the jb in the bridge is money)I actually have the ec400vf, i went to a local store and compared it with the ec401vf and the only difference is that mine is made in Korea and the 401vf in made in Indonesia.Overall, i looked at the more expensive EC1000 .. no difference sonically (the version with seymour duncans), you are just pay for all the abalone and other stuff i really do not care for So, in conclusion, if you are torn between this guitar, a high end epiphone les paul, a low end gibson, BUY THIS GUITAR .. AND you will not be able to wipe that smile of your face for about a week .. if not more
