I've been playing for 25 years and own several guitars. I play for my own enjoyment these days and don't really want to mess around with fixer-uppers or a guitar I have to fight to play. I read of the quality components that went into the EVH Specials and for the price on a used one at MF I decided to go for it, hoping I would get lucky and snag one of the last Made in Japan models before production switched over to China.
When it arrived I was MASSIVELY depressed to find the model I received was Made in China and not in Japan as the associate on the phone assured me before purchasing. A couple of phone calls later it was determined that an honest mistake had been made and that there were no longer any Made in Japan models available new OR used. I would have returned it immediately had I not already set the guitar up to my liking and played it already, because this guitar is flat-out awesome. I had to tweak the Floyd to get it to lay flat for proper D-Tuna usage and tuning, and remedied a loose input jack. Outside of that, the guitar was put together like a tank. A little heavier than I thought it would be, though. The neck is ridiculously comfortable and smooth - and I love the short scale. The stainless steel frets are smooth as glass. The pots are just as described and make for fun volume swells. The finish is menacing and very cool. Doesn't mark up like I worried it would. The Wolfgang pickups are very hot, responsive and articulate. Very clear, even when really overdriven. Can be a little dull clean, but you don't buy this guitar for the clean tone - it is more than adequate.
Overall, I fell in love with the guitar and I am glad I made the purchase. It inspires me to play more often and I can't believe how much FUN this thing is to just jam on. Isn't that what owning a guitar is all about? If you are looking for a fun guitar that can rock with ease (and then some - easily does classic rock to metal) I would say you can't go wrong with the Wolfie Special.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

1st...it looks better than in the photographs. Very attractive matte black with ebony fingerboard. The cream binding and zebra pickups add to the coolness. Although I haven't played the American non-special version, I can't justify the cost difference here. I'm sure they're great, and if money permits then you win bragging rights. Everything's the same sans the binding, carved top, and veneer maple top (which isn't visible on this color anyway). Plays just like the American made peavey wolfgang I owned several years ago and regretted selling. Besides the specials for the moment are coming out of Japan, and all my expensive Ibanez Jem's and Gretch's are made in Japan, so that's not a bad thing.

Original floyd rose's are clunky to me, especially compared to modern day edge's that come equipped on Ibanez jems. But that is not saying they are junky, just more classic and not refined. Obviously Eddie can work them over. No cutaway, so dive boming only. Screw in arm, so it does have a "slack" feel to it that you can sometimes hear (clunking) when doing whammy effects.
No cutaway for your picking forearm. You will feel your arm getting sore as it rests against the straight edge of the guitar while your picking. Uncomfortable at first, but I noticed I'm getting used to it.
Overall- a great sounding, playing, cool guitar with nice specs. Very crunchy pickups, which allow you to get a modern Van Halen tone without much effort. I have quite an extensive collection, and have owned several more guitars of higher price. The EVH special line offers one of the best price/value mixes out there. High recommend here...
