Comments about EVH Wolfgang USA Custom Set Neck Electric Guitar:
I have a large collection of 40+ guitars from vintage to new releases. In it I have 4 early EVH EBMM and 2 Wolfgang American arch tops. I have been staring at this guitar for awhile but with the lack of reviews held off. I love oddball, unique guitars and this is one. Some hardcore EVH fans may write it off seeing it has no bar,4 knobs and worst of all.... Set neck!
Well I am here to tell you the marriage of Wolfgang pickups and heavy mahogany is a winner. The sustain is incredible. I had to do a double take and make sure my Keely Compressor I took off my board months ago was not on! Through either my Orange or Mesa clean its smoother, warmer sound deeper than the ligher Wolfgangs. The sustain and tone again is noticably higher. I am talking up their with my 59 LP RI which is legendary for its sound. Under heavy distortion,OD its thickness, deeper tone does muddy up whereas the regular Wolfs cut though.
Playing this instrument is a delight. It feels simular to the Wolfies. The painted neck is smooth and does not drag. Frets are ss,small making for big bends and super fast runs. I noticed that even with the bridge set really high, the action is very low. So if you like high action or run heavy strings it may or may not be a issue.
Easily imo the most classy of the Evh lineup. My matched up flamed top looks incredible. Binding all around,Prs attention to detail and also a ss fret job worthy of the best. This one guitar moves the EVH lineup up a notch from pretty shredders to one worthy of being THE EVH flagship guitar. Not much more can be done to improve the sound and playabilty so I consider this the pinacle of the Wolfgangs. Now Eddie needs to come up and release a new body style as I and others have grown tired of the same body.
Comments about EVH Wolfgang USA Custom Set Neck Electric Guitar:
It's a great guitar... I think people should not write it off as a LP, but take it for what it is. It's a strat type guitar thats in the construction of a Les Paul. With the pickups as they are it will be a high gain rocker guitar and that's what it is. I feel like it has a little bit more warmth than the standard version of the wolfgang, but haven't done a side by side. It's van halen without a whammy... I like it. I want to say i'm not biased on the guitars, because I originally purchased a Japanese version and hated it... Then I sold it and got a USA version and was amazed... Then from there I bought the custom shop version. So anyways I wasn't sold on these guitars at first until I started buying the US versions and realized the quality was much better.
I am happy with my purchase from MF. They did a great job.
This guitar has some great features, but some are unnecessary. The fine tuners are not really needed, but they are kind of cool. The individual tone nobs are pretty cool... Using a combo of the pickups helps to get a blusy sound. It's practically a les paul, but with hot rodded pickups. Don't expect to play this guitar with a Marshall amp. It just won't sound right, but it works great with the 5150.
The quality is far superior than other comparable guitars except maybe prs. I would say it's on par with PRS. The guitar came setup really well from the factory... It was very easy to play. I checked the nut action and it was all good as well as the bridge action. It gets the proper amount of buzzing when strumming and fretting each note... You know the buzz when you hit the note too hard, because of low action... Yes this is perfect no need to take to a luthier for setup like a LP. Setup included, but hey for this price it should be right. USA versions are much better than Japanese. If you have the money spend it on a USA model...Better wood and build.
Well, I would say it's kind of pricey, but it's high quality. I'll let you decide whether it's a good value. I would say I paid the same price as a LP, but I didn't have to take to a luthier for setup plus It has stainless steel frets. So for the value compared to a LP it's phenomenal... I always cringe on value of guitars this expensive, because I'm not sure I can rank it accurately if I was to compare it to say a PRS. I mean some prs are cheaper and play just as good. I really think value could be in the eye of the beholder. Value in my mind diminishes once you hit a certain price point. It's not so much the wood cost more, but that it's an EVH lp style guitar. I'm suprised EVH allowed them to make it, because I think he was always against these at the other manufacturers... I'm happy he did though.
