OVERVIEW

The legendary rock machine with a totally solid bridge setup.

The Fender American Strat has a hardtail bridge instead of a tremolo, and all the refinements of the American Electric Guitar Series: rolled-edge neck, custom staggered pickup pole pieces, and highly detailed fret and nut work. This Fender Stratocaster's non-veneered body with hum/single/hum routing leaves more wood for greater resonance, while its staggered machine heads result in one less string tree.

FEATURES
  • Hardtail bridge
  • New rolled-edge neck design
  • Custom staggered pickup pole pieces
  • Non-veneered body
  • 3 single-coil pickups
  • Body is routed to allow addition of humbuckers in bridge and neck positions

I have a hard tail with a maple neck. Because the body is more solid, it sounds a little different than a standard strat. It is more glassy and punchy sounding than a strat and a little less twangy than a telecaster. The action sits pretty low without fret buzz and the frets are somewhat wider and more comfortable than on my 86' MIJ standard. All in all, this is the best sounding guitar I have ever played and a just a few steps short of the fastest neck I have played (this is by no means a shredder guitar, but the wide frets make jazz comping very easy and faster than on a shredder machine). One caveat is that I am not a rock or metal guy and I think that both types of players would be disappointed with this guitar; it really isn't set up to play either style of music. I have never played the custom shop Robert Cray model, but can't imagine this sounding much different. In fact, through a blackface, it gets nearly the same identical tone he did on his "Strong Persuader" album from the mid 80's. If you are a blues, jazz or R&B guy this is the ideal guitar for you. I also imagine that one could pull off a pretty good rockabilly/old country performance on the same. If you are a tone guy, this is a great guitar!

I purchased this guitar recently. My son has the Mexican made one with a tremolo. I tell you that build quality of his was better than mine. I found screws on the pickguard loose. If I had to go by quality alone I could have saved the money and bought the Mexican Strat and added Noiseless pickups. The high price is unjustified given the quality (or lack thereof). You don't have to be an experienced musician to be a smart consumer.

hardtail american strat review

By Jeff-YAxuv

from chicago IL

i replaced the stock pickups with fender lace sensors in the HSS config. red in bridge, gold in middle, and blue in the neck. This guitar is the most amazing non-trem equiped guitar. Its so comfortable and easy to play. I played my First Act V-dub guitar for a week, and when i picked my strat back up, it just felt like home. GOOD JOB, FENDER!

Its good but i cant play Stratocasters!!!

I dont now why i cant play on Stratocasters. When i try it just dosent work out. But when i play on a gibson SG Standard im playing without any problems. Good guitar really, even tho i cant play on it. I can complain about 1 thing on this guitar, expekt the playability that dosent work for me for some reason. That is...The volume knob. For me it is so incredibly missplaced. Its annoying when i try play on the guitar. It gets in the way and umm...yea you now its just beeing there and annoying me. Well im obviesly not a Stratocaster man. Still tho this is agreat guitar ;) For those that can play it. Personally tho, I prefer Gibson SG!

if you're lucky enough to find one of these GET IT! the added wood from not having the trem gives more sustain. it really is the perfect guitar - other than, say, 80's left over players. - who uses trem's anymore anyway! and even those guys used flyod rose ones . . . the body is routed for hhh so you have a wide array of possibilities w. this guitar. and fwiw w/ the fender pearlygates humbucker in the bridge it will ROCK any LP. (I've put it up against several, less sus than a LP but the tone is the same, if not better!! imo i now have 2 of these guitars and NOTHING compares!!!!

I bought this guitar in three tone sunburst.

This is a great playing guitar. It came set-up well and plays like a dream. I was not pleased with the pick-ups and had my guitar tech put in a set of Seymour Duncans made for a Strat. This baby is now awesome. My guitar tech said it is the best Strat he ever played and the pick-ups make it scream. I play through a Line 6 POD and it is hot. It is my #1 now.

Guitar Heaven!

The hard tail strat rules! Add the Fender Schaller Locking Tuners, staggered set Fender product number 0990818100, and you have a guitar that never goes outa tune and plays like a dream! Action from the factory was perfect. Minimal Hum from the single coils. At todays prices this would be a bargain at three times the price!

Probably just the greastest guitar ever

By Kafzilla

from Los Angeles, Ca

I wanted to upgrade my MIM strat but didnt like or use the tremolo much. I saw this Fender HT on this site, ordered it and thought it was a great playing instrument. I like the medium jumbo frets alot better than the vintage frets the Made in Mexico has. The noisless pick-ups sound really good too. This is my first choice when I pick-up a guitar and I have many.

Is there a better, more versitile, guitar made? NO! The American Series Fender is the prototype by which all other guitars are measured! Thank you, Leo!

LOVE THIS AUTHENTIC INSTRUMENT

By Simply Charming at age 50

After playing standard strats (Mexican made)for years, and loving it, I just had to have an American start, and in the hard tail model. Its an absolute dream guitar! At first getting used to the slightly wider nut/neck width was a minor bother, but now the feel is in line with my other guitars of the same width, namely my Martin acoustics. Its a consistency that now feels absolutely perfect! (I want a white one for a choice of colors to match my attire.) The parchment (eggshell white) pickguard looks awesome against the black body. The maple board is sweet. This version looks a lot like the Clapton model, but with the modern C shaped neck, and modern bridge pieces, less the tremolo. (I never use tremolo) Best guitar on the planet! The only complaint is the case that came with this American start. It is less sturdy and less protective than the aftermarket Fender case that I have for my other start. Specifically, the compartment box inside is especially harsh to the neck, which rests on a sharp tip of the compartment box. I remedied this by pulling out the box panel, trimming it to mate flush with the neck.

Great Guitar!

I have owned this guitar for about a year now and I have to say it is one of the all around best guitars I have ever played. The hard tail bridge provides for a perfectly tunned guitar every time. The volume and tone pots are high quality so buzzing is not an issue. Since I play a heavier kind of music I changed the pickups to DiMarzio HS-3 pickups. These pickups allowed me to add huge amounts of sustain and a warm/fat sound without eliminating the guitars overall clarity and top end. The body is comfortable and easy on the back, the neck is smooth and fast, and the quality of the guitar is top of the line. Overall this guitar is a great buy!

This is a very feminine instrument. Maple neck- Run it through a Joe Meek preamp that drives a little Soldano. No auxillary effects. These guitars were made for Soldanos. The tone is absolutley unearthly. I've seen people that had to laugh, in order to abort tears of exhilaration after hearing what this hardtail coaxes out of a Soldano. If this guitar doesn't sound great, straight through a GOOD amp- You can't play. Only suggestion: put on a real set of strings when you get it. And you can spoil yourself with noiseless pickups, graphite saddles, and locking tuners when someone asks what's on your holiday wish list.

Love Mine

After going through a whole rack of Fender Strats, I eyeballed a white Hard Tail (I never was a fan of whammy bar), and pulled it off the rack. I plugged it in, played it in the different bridge positions, and couldn't believe the tone. I don't know if I just got lucky, (I didn't compare it with any other HT's) but it played great, the action was perfect as factory set, for me, and the tone was just incredible (for my tastes). I wish it had Jumbo Frets instead of Medium Jumbos. A few very minor (and I mean minor) cosmetic flaws. No big deal, I'm sure I'll add some good solid flaws myself. The salesman had walked away, I guess he thought I was going to play every Strat in the place. After 20 minutes, I took it up to the counter and said "I'll take it". A very patient salesman was pleased. I was pleased, and when I got it home and changed the strings out with new D'Addario 11's, (I'm primarily a blues player), the tone was even better. I don't think you can get a better blues axe, American Made at the Corona shop, dollar for dollar. I would recommend that you at least give it a listen.

Wanted An American Made Strat

I purchased the 3 Tone Sunburst w/Rosewood Fretboard. It is a pretty Guitar, no flaws with the finish at all. It plays real good but the pick-ups are not Hot enough for my liking. I play through a 100 Watt Marshall and a Line 6 pedal board. When I change to my Epiphone Les Paul, I have to turn down and re-adjust some. I am installing a set of Seymour Duncan pickups in this Axe to get better tones and hotter response. Kinda sad to do after spending $1000 already.
