I got very lucky and purchased the last red paisley flames they had for the '08 holiday season. This guitar rocks from Muddy Waters blues to the Elvis stuff James Burton played and beyond to ZZ Top(Billy Gibbons plays a tele too). The lace sensor pickups produce the nicest tones. The S1 button gives an extra burst of tone on demand. Fit, finish and setup upon arrival was excellent. The truck trek across the country in winter weather required a truss rod adjustment. This brings me to the only con about the guitar. The truss rod is adjusted by a phillips head screw at the body end of the neck, also half hidden by the body, which means you have to loosen the neck screws and raise the neck for access. Access to the adjustment screw is also hindered by the neck pickup.I love they way it looks and how I look playing it. I love the tones produced from the lace sensors and S1 button. Fast easy neck, I got the pearl tuning heads and they look fantastic. I love the 5 way switch. I am selling my '91 Am Std Strat after getting this guitar because this does everything that does and even more. Highly recommend, zero buyers remorse here.

The positive features of this guitar: Looks great and plays great (slim neck with a wonderful feel and action).
The negative impression: The guitar arrived with a red wire sticking out of the toggle switch plate. (See attached photos). The plate was tight and the red wire was pinched. However, I loosened the screws on the plate and sled the red wire back to a proper position and re-tightened the plate. The toggle switch and pickups seem to work fine; however, this guitar as a booster button inside the volume knob. This is supposed to boost the single coil pickups to a humbucker effect. It does that, but it is not a big difference and the sound does not jump or increase significantly. Is this the way it is designed, or is this particular guitar defective? I don't know.. I have never played this particular model before, so I have nothing to compare. This is a special signature model and is not common, so I can't go to Guitar Center and try one out and see if my guitar is comparable. I am very disappointed in the poor quality control of Fender; and I am disappointed that Musician's Friend shipped a defective guitar to me. I can return the guitar, but it will take months to reorder another James Burton Signature guitar as they are out of stock. The point is the consumer should not have to repair a new guitar upon receipt of the instrument--particularly high end and expensive instruments! I contacted Musician's Friend, and they advised me to just loosen the screws on the plate and reposition the exposed wire. I did so, but I am not confident that this guitar was not previously returned by someone; or, if someone had modified the toggle switch. I just don't know why the wire would be exposed. Musician's Friend representative did not seem concerned at all.

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I recently purchased one of these gorgeous instruments from Burton himself, and I am much more than pleased. The 5-way Strat-o-Tele lace sensor pickups make it sing like an angel and scream like a demon. This guitar is crazy versatile, allowing for a southern twang that will make Willie Nelson jealous or a breakdown so heavy that every metal head within 10 miles will come see what's up.
The neck on this guitar leaves nothing to be desired. The round neck is very reminiscent of an acoustic guitar (which I enjoy particularly) and the maple fretboard plays smoother than silk. The tuning machines are top notch, as well. No amount of harsh strumming or fierce bending will even nudge the tuning of this guitar.
Overall, the world-class workmanship, dumbfounding versatility, and spectacular performance of this guitar, make it worthy of any great musician.

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

This is a solid guitar and you really can't go wrong. I'm not a huge fan of vintage frets. It isn't a flaw with the guitar but it is something to consider if you are used to bigger frets (which most people seem to prefer these days).

Also, I was hoping the pick ups would provide a more wide range of sounds. Overall, they are solid but they are pretty "clean" sounding. Not the same as the lace sensor pick ups that were used in the clapton strat. Again, not a flaw but these pick ups seem to resist distortion. But it is a tele, so that is to be expected, I guess. Overall, a great guitar. Played great right out of the box...

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

Fender Telecaster Artist Series James Burton in Red paisley flames, maple neck, gold hardware, strato-tele controls, S-1 knob. Picked this axe up here and it was sent prompty and perfectly setup. THe sound is to die for. With this tele I can sound like Clapton, Keith Richards, or the man himself - James Burton. THe maple neck and medium frets are smooth and comfortable. The red flame over black finish was flawless. They must have spent extra time on these babies. Every tele lover should have one of these babies. Highly recommended.

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for about 15 months. I play in a country band and this guitar does it all. The tone is amazing and I like the strat/tele switching. It's 2 guitars in one!!!!!!! It sounds great through my Fender Blues Deville 4x10 amp. The guitar has the twang, sustain and total tone control!!

I run this guitar straight to a Fender DeVille, the tone is the best. I play classic rock and country the only effect I use is a chorus. The five way switch and the three pick ups give you many choices.

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

This axe sounds great as others have noted. Is a little darker sounding than a regular tele but it is a great rich tone. OK here is the real scoop after I got it I thought why no middle pickup sound according to the marketing literature. Then I thought well is it was me I would give the middle sound with the S-1 switch engaged. Lo and behold it was there. Then i downloaded the wiring diagram and there it was in b&w - an undocumented feature. Nice going Fender!!

    Excellent guitar

    By Gavan

    from Spring, Texas

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

If you are a fan of James Burton then this guitar is a must have for your collection. the S-1 Switch is great for an almost infinite sound selection. The the 3 single coil pickups sets it apart from other telecasters. The flames and gold hardware look great. The only problem I have had is the S-1 button on mine kept falling off because the tubing that holds it into place did not hold it securely.Other then that this guitar sounds great and looks great.

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I've had many guitars, especially telecasters which are my favorite. The Burton tele is as near perfect as a guitar can be. Best neck pickup I've had -- super versatile from sparky to fat. The middle pickup is never weedy sounding (as they can tend to be) and sings sweetly when driven. The bridge pickup is clear and awesomely never shrill. I'd note these are particularly clean sounding pickups -- they will fatten up with overdrive but always retain a lot of their core sound. If you're a telecaster purist you will be surprised how well these non-telecaster-standard pickups do that tele twang. The tones, across the board, are to die for. (I play a clean amp, fender, and slight overdrive via Klon pedal, and that's all).

The neck shape is my ideal - a slightly Deep D shape that is not huge but it has some mass. The basswood body was a nice surprise -- love the way it rings when unplugged. (Note - Jeff Becks main Strat is also basswood body, and likely not by sheer chance). Setup: near perfect, but I raised the pickups a tad. Weight is not heave but not super light. Mine is 7.7 lbs. an they range from 7.5 to the low 8s.

Either you like the body flames or you don't. I didn't, but had to have this. They've grown on me in the 4 months I've had the guitar. I do wish there was a normal tele finish option with pick guard etc. But to be clear, even if the guitar had dog do-do painted on it, I'd still buy it.

After 4 months and many hours, I love this guitar more than any I've ever had (and wow there's been a lot). It's not even close to a tie. If I ever had have just one guitar, this would be the one, and with no remorse!

I'll say this about the artist signature fender guitars --- I've owned a Beck, two claptons, g.e. Smith, and others. I've owned custom shop items. They're all nice. But: Mr James Burton has designed a guitar that beats them all in tone and versatility. Hands down. This is a real steal at the $1600 price level

        James Burton Tele

        By Paul-VKwu5

        from Upper Michigan

Comments about Fender Artist Series James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar:

I've owned the JB Tele for 10 years and it doesn't disappoint. I love the 5 way pick-up switch. The out-of phase capability was one of the reasons I settled on this Tele (I was a die-hard Strat player). Also, the instrument is very stable in all weather conditions (I live in the upper great lakes region). The thru body bridge and high quality tuning machines keep this guitar in tune. The neck is VERY fast especially when strung with JB's preferred string guages. It has been my main guitar for recording as it can produce a wide variety of tone colors, but I plan to start gigging with it. If you despise whammy bars, racoon tails, reflecters, bells and whistles as much as I do, this is the guitar for you. It's a straight-up low maintenance bare knuckles, beautiful guitar with "that tone!"

I have owned 8 Telecasters over my lifetime including a 1959 and an early 70's Thinline and this James Burton signature is the "Cadillac" of them all. Great set up out of the box and some great sound combinations. This was an open box item in near mint condition with minor pick scratches under a very bright light. It was deeply discounted. My best buy at MF!

I have been looking at this guitar for years but did not have the extra cash. I am a big fan of James Burton and I knew if he had any influence on the construction of this guitar it would be well worth the wait. Not disappointed at all. The finish is flawless, a work of Art! Great job fender! And I can say that this guitar sounds as good as it looks. I play in a Christian contemporary band as well as a classic rock band and this handles all styles I need. Clean as well as driven. I have strats and other tele's and they all fit the bill but this one guitar other then no whammy bar but it is a tele so that's OK works for everything hands down. I'm only going to add locking tuners as you can get them In gold and that's one improvement I do on all my guitars. The relief at the neck joint is another great thing fender did on this guitar and it helps. Pulled the trigger when MF was offering 18 month no interest. Great company no complaints. Keep up the good work
