OVERVIEW

Equal parts tribute and roadworthy rocker.

From Fender®'s Artist Series, this Telecaster features an alder body with a maple "C" shape neck, rosewood fingerboard and 2 vintage style single-coil Tele® pickups with alnico magnets.

Designed in cooperation with the Strummer estate, the Joe Strummer electric guitar has a highly distressed "road-worn" treatment that duplicates the original's worn-to-the-wood layers of gray auto primer and flat black spray paint. It also features a "Revolution Rock" engraved neckplate and a limited edition art customization kit that includes Strummer-inspired stencils, stickers and graphics by designer Shepard Fairey.

Strummer was, of course, the Clash's articulate and fiery co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer; he later founded, recorded and toured with the Mescaleros. All his life, he vigorously championed individuality, self-expression and change--tenets often reflected in the constantly altered look of his favorite instrument--his Telecaster (currently on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland), an otherwise standard '60s-era model with all the original parts and specifications.

When Strummer bought it in 1975 for é120, the guitar had a Three-color Sunburst finish. He was having none of that, of course, but his improvised DIY gray and black "finishes" deteriorated quickly, giving the Telecaster its distinctive look. Like Strummer's music, the battered electric guitar changed constantly--plastered as it was with stencils, stickers and new paint jobs through the many stages of Strummer's life and career.

To celebrate Strummer's fierce sense of individuality, Fender and acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey collaborated on the new guitar's limited edition Joe Strummer Telecaster customization kit, which includes stencils and stickers inspired by the custom designs Strummer decorated many of his instruments with. The kit comes in a classic 12" album cover featuring graphics by Fairey and photography by Bob Gruen and will accompany the first 1,500 guitars.

The legacy of Joe Strummer (1952-2002) continues to live on, grow louder and shake up the establishment with the release of the Joe Strummer Telecaster, modeled after the beat up and battle-hardened '66 Tele® he wielded as leader of "the only band that matters"--seminal Brit punk commando unit the Clash.

I bought this about a month ago as a collectible being that I am infected with GAS, Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. What I didn't expect was how comfortable this Tele is! It is a Tele to be sure but it begs to be played! You don't have to worry about scratching it or denting it, which allows me to relax when I play it. I play it thru a Peavey Classic and it just blows me away. Crisp and clean, growls from the 50's, soft and delicate, whatever your pleasure with a Tele is, it's here. My overall opinion is that it is so damned comfortable to play, like a an old broken in Tele. It is a solid sinner. Neck frets perfectly and the pu's give you all the strenth and power you expect from a Tele. Forget it is made in Mexico, you can't tell the difference as I own alot of Tele's that are USA made. It is as ugly as a mud fence but soon becomes beautiful as you play it. Strong like an adirondack ball bat. Tough little cookie. You sure don't have to baby it. Sweat all over it then wipe it off. It is indestructable and transmits that feeling to you as you play it. You ain't going to wear it out! If you want a real broken in Tele grab one of these while they are available. If you are a collector you can't go wrong and at this price you will realize a decade from now what an investment this is!

Please this guitar looks like a weekend project for a hack that knows what a beat up tele should looklike but definately not what it should play like. This is like way overdone...with the relicing with a rather cheap and not very good neck.I played this through every worthwhile amp and sat with it for at least 45 min. This guitar has depth and even worse no personality.I wish they would stop making these relics and get to some real guitar building.

Long live the Clash!!!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I received my Joe Strummer telecaster recently and I must say I am blown away. The feel of the neck is awesome. The whole guitar itself is an exact replica of Joe's 66' tele. The fact that this guitar is so affordable is what is so surprising to me. If you are a fan of the Clash or vintage teles, pick up this guitar RIGHT NOW!!

Rockin Tele

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Well just cause it says Joe Strummer, doesn't mean you can't play like Angus Young, Jimmy Page, John Frusciante, Eric Clapton and The Edge on this guitar. The neck was very smooth and ready for for some action, perfect for some bluesy bends and metal trills. The fact it is worn just adds a nice feeling of comfort when playing this badass guitar, plus if your one for nostalgia, this will ring your rocker! Just because a punk guy played it, doesn't mean its overrated

Quite Nice

I tried this Tele out for an extended period and it is a great guitar. I wanted to buy it badly after playing. The relic effect is a little over the top and the price is perhaps high but it sounds perfect and plays like a worn-in baseball glove. Neck was nearly identical to a friend's worn 1962 Strat (the neck is sanded and shaped with satin/no finish feel). Very comfortable, sounds great, and if you like the rust and weathering, it's a perfect guitar. Pickups sound great also--not hot but perfect for just about anything. Sounded great clean or with heavy distortion.

American Features @ a Mexican Price Point

By Tele-PLR

What can I say, you have to actually see it and hear it to fully appreciate this guitar.... The first time I saw it I was blown away. It's fit and finish was amazing and is right up there with the American guitars for a fraction of the price. Not to mention it shines when paired with a class A tube amp. The biggest thing that got me was it felt at home and worn in the first time I picked it up and I don't have to worry about stress fractures from years of hard playing or something happening to the neck or old tricky pick ups acting up in the middle of the gig because it is new. G R E A T GUITAR ***!*!***!*!

Diamond in the Rough

By ewokultra

from Hudson Valley

I picked up this guitar in used condition in my Local Guitar Shop. I could not believe how great the neck felt. I was not in the market for a new guitar, but after spending a few hours rocking out in the shop, I could find absolutely nothing I did not like about this guitar. The neck is super fast and fits perfectly in the hand. The tone of the guitar is superb. They made a great one down in Mexico.

A good replica of a good Guitar

By Clayton-KAzF2

I walked into my local guitar shop today, and saw the Joe Strummer replica sitting on the wall. I picked it up and felt it. It gave off a good vibe in my hands, so I plugged it in. The first thing I noticed was the sound. That almost mythical "vintage guitar" only sound that is almost impossible to find. It played like a 42 year old guitar just as it was modeled, and the playability was wonderful. I am not a Joe Strummer fan, but I am of his replica guitar. The finish perfectly emmulates the wear and tear of use on the road, and felt at home right in my hands. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who loves vintage guitars but can not get their hands on the real thing. I can't wait till I get mine.

My favorite guitar

By Chris

from Livingston, NJ

A '66 remake of a Tele would be great; but Fended went the extra mile and made the Strummer Tele. It's an excellent replica of the real deal. The attention to detail is impressive. I have several Fenders- a customized strat, a Mustang reissue... and a Gibson LP, a LP Jr., and high end SG. My Telecaster is versatile, more playable, sounds like it should, and just super cool (I say this as an admitted Clash fan). My favorite guitar by far, because of how it looks, how it plays, and the fact that it was my wife's first Christmas gift to me. Its amazingly versatile and incredibly playable. Easily my favorite guitar, a great addition to your gear and investment!

Great Gutar, not too great price

By Ange

from San Franciscon, Ca.

I was really excited to get this guitar. I didnt expect too much though since it is a made in mexico tele. I was pleasantly surprised when I finaly got it because this guitar plays about as good as any guitar I've owned! Fast, comfortable neck, easy acces to all the frets, killer feeling neck, and nice crisp tone. I would buy another one without a doubt if something ever happend to this one.

BEST GUITAR EVER!

By Rican

from Denver CO

I made the purchase on a whim, as soon as I discovered it was discontinued I had to have it. The neck is incredibly fast and has a nice broken in feel. The tone is so beyond any other guitar Ive ever owned or played, extremely crisp and clear. This is the best guitar Ive ever owned, or even played, it makes everything played through it INCREDIBLE! kudos to fender for a relic in the true spirit of punk rock, and thank you to Joe Strummer for inspiring it!

Not worth it

By philrr

from Kenosha,WI

First of I love Joe Strummer and the Clash. But almost $900 for a Mexican made guitar. You might as well buy a Standard Tele and color over it. I'd rather buy a Highway 1. At least thats American Made. So in my opioion this isn't worth it at all.

have one, love it

By daveO-reK3M

from okc

Wife bought it for christmas of 07. First thing that appealled to her was the finish, and that it would set apart from my other guitars, strats, teles, and lps. I plugged it in my super reverb fender and was blown away by the tone and sound. It has been used the most since I got it, the only complaint was that adjusting the neck and bridge was almost impossible due to the rust on the screws. I had to soak the screws for about 2 hours to allow me to adjust it. Now it plays like it should and can't stop playing it.

Ask me a question

I played a few of these and was blown away by the necks. They really are an amazing replica of a 1966 Fender neck profile. I have a real '66 Strat and the necks are identical! Truly a perfect feel. This guitar is a tribute to Joe Strummer's Telecaster, not intended to be a perfect replica. It captures that feeling perfectly, and sounds and plays fabulously! My only "gripe" would be that the relicing on the paint finish is very smooth- but you don't have to baby the guitar so it will ding up nicely!I have about 12 Teles and this is now my favorite!

Perfection

By RyanDuty

I've owned 20 guitars now. This is by far the best playing, best sounding guitar I've ever owned. I've had ESP's, Schecter's, Ibanez's, Gibsons', Danelectro's, Steinberger's, and Squier's. Fender is SUPERIOR. I was skeptical about the price and value, but this tele exceeded my expectations. It is worth 3 times the amount they ask for it.

I've had many guitars, mostly Fender Teles and Strats. This Strummer Tele is an amazing deal and very good quality. I'm Glad to see the Mexican Fenders becoming a better quality guitar every time. The Classic Players are an amazing deal also.
