Fender

Fender introduces a Mustang inspired by a true grunge legend: Kurt Cobain.

When Kurt Cobain hit the stage, it was very often with a Mustang® guitar—an enigmatic anti-hero figure with an esoteric anti-hero instrument. It’s with great pride then that Fender introduces the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which evokes the man, the band, the sound and the times, and gives an authentically crafted nod to one of the most unlikely guitars to ever find itself at the center of a musical maelstrom.

See for yourself—go back and watch the famous 1991 video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and there he is with it is slung over his shoulder. Or think back to when you saw them on the ’93-’94 In Utero tour, when he seldom went onstage with anything but a Mustang. Quite often and especially later on, Mustangs were a big influence on Kurt Cobain's distinctive sound.

Inspired by his arsenal of modded guitars, the new Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang boasts highly distinctive features including an angled single-coil Mustang neck pickup and ferocious Seymour Duncan® JB humbucking bridge pickup mounted directly to the body, dual on-off/phase in-out switches for each pickup, a polyester-finished alder body and an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with dynamic vibrato tailpiece.

Other features include the classic 24” Mustang scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays, four-ply pickguard, master volume and tone controls, vintage-style tuners, and chrome hardware. Available in right- and left-handed models.

Features

  • Alder body
  • 24" Scale C-shape maple neck
  • Rosewood fretboard
  • Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker mounted directly to the body
  • Mustang single-coil neck pickup
  • Dual On/Off phase in-out switches for each pickup
  • Adjusto-Matic® bridge

This guitar is pretty awesome. Tons of tone switching options between the pickups. I thought it may be a little 'weak' like the other mustangs, but the seymour duncan gives it plenty of punch. The recessed switches dont get in the way like the ones on the older mustangs do. The only thing i did was change the strings and I flipped and locked down the vibrato tailpiece. Good fender tone AND plenty of kick.

Very happy with this guitar!

Features:

I have always been a fan of Mustang guitars. I had a re-issue about 9 years ago and with my smaller than average hands this guitar fits like a glove. I love the Kurt Cobain signature model not only because of the cool color combination of the blue body and pick guard but the Seymour Duncan bridge pick ups are a great improvement. I love the low end growl on this guitar and the smooth silky sound of the neck pick up. Plus being able to blend them together with the switches is awesome! Love the weight of this guitar, the sound and the ease of finger positions. The smaller scale makes it easier for me to play a wider range of scales and complex chords.

Quality:

The quality of the neck and string height/action is fabulous! The pick-ups sound amazing! The only two issues I have are: it's hard to maintain a good tightness on the tremolo bar screw... too tight and it won't move, too loose and the bar falls out. Needs a better design. The second issue is that the pick up selector switches seem to crackle more frequently than other Fender guitars I have. You'll need to get a can of circuit cleaner with this guitar. But overall I am VERY happy with this quitar.

Value:

For me, I am happy to pay a little more for a specialized guitar that fits my smaller frame/hands. Love it! I know this is more of a custom guitar with custom pickups so the price seems pretty good. But I was happy to find a used on through Musicians Friend. It did not look used at all and I am very happy with the value.

I own a dozen high end guitars and this may be my favorite!

Features:

The tone on this guitar is just amazing!  My bass player calls it COCO CRISP.  It cuts through the sound and is clean yet powerful and incredible high end tone.  I was expecting it to be more one dimensional and lean towards the distorted grunge arena BUT am pleasantly surprised with it's versatility!

Quality:

My new favorite guitar....I have never heard such tone and versatility come from any other guitar...I have a GIBSON LES PAUL, a RICKENBACKER 12-string, FENDER STRATOCATER, etc.

Value:

I would expect this KURT COBAIN model to cost more...especially after playing it.  Amazing looks and wide range of sounds.

Overall:

It is well worth the $ and after playing it...would expect it to cost more.  It not only has looks but it has complete versatility!

Had to have this guitar!

Features:

I wanted this guitar because I like this pick-up configuration.  I'm a 51 fan and a Mustang fan and here I have a bit of both.  The pick-up selections are diverse enough for me that I'm not bored.  The necks shorter scale and shape make the guitar easy to play.  I thought the guitar would be light like my Pawn Shop Mustang, but it was a nice 7lbs.  I saw others that were a little over 7.5lbs.  I picked up the sonic blue and love it.  I keep trying to get a red Mustang, but the blue wins out every time.  I honestly don't even like blue guitars, but love blue Mustangs!  The tuners are fabulous, even with new strings I'm having to do very little if anything to the tuning before I start playing.

Quality:

Everything is perfect on the guitar except for a couple of things.  The frets seem a little rough.  This is not from the wood shrinking or anything like that it is just the way the beveled edges were finished.  In my mind I shouldn't feel that roughness when I run my fingers over them.  The mechanism to hold in the tremolo bar isn't very reliable.  I have a Duo Sonic and a Pawn Shop Mustang special and both had hard tails.  This is my first Mustang with a trem.

Value:

An artist guitar at this price should have included a gig bag. I've purchased cheaper Fender guitars that came with a gig bag.

Overall:

I love the way play and the way it sounds.

Sweet Guitar.

Features:

I have 3 Mustangs and this one is by far my favorite. I got the red one to get away from the whole Kurt thing cause most people don't know much about his red one. It feels and plays like a regular Mustang, but I was really surprised at how heavy this one can sound. Like the recessed switches so you can be a bit more aggressive and not have to worry about hitting one by accident. The adjust-o-matic bridge doesn't change much, just makes the bridge plate look bigger. If you love Mustangs, it's worth picking up. The fiesta red finish is a nice change in pace from the dakota red on standard Mustangs. It almost has an orangish look in cetain light.

Quality:

It hasn't fallen apart yet. lol

Value:

Well worth the money if you want a modified Mustang right out of the box.

Overall:

All in all, great guitar. Most versitile sounding Mustang I own. Put together as well as anything else I own that has come out of fender japan, which I have never had a complaint about in the past. I usually have to play on heavier strings to get the sound I want out of one, but this one can sound like metal, nirvana, blues, you name it. right out of the box.
