Fender

Fender introduces a Mustang inspired by a true grunge legend: Kurt Cobain.

When Kurt Cobain hit the stage, it was very often with a Mustang® guitar—an enigmatic anti-hero figure with an esoteric anti-hero instrument. It’s with great pride then that Fender introduces the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which evokes the man, the band, the sound and the times, and gives an authentically crafted nod to one of the most unlikely guitars to ever find itself at the center of a musical maelstrom.

See for yourself—go back and watch the famous 1991 video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and there he is with it is slung over his shoulder. Or think back to when you saw them on the ’93-’94 In Utero tour, when he seldom went onstage with anything but a Mustang. Quite often and especially later on, Mustangs were a big influence on Kurt Cobain's distinctive sound.

Inspired by his arsenal of modded guitars, the new Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang boasts highly distinctive features including an angled single-coil Mustang neck pickup and ferocious Seymour Duncan® JB humbucking bridge pickup mounted directly to the body, dual on-off/phase in-out switches for each pickup, a polyester-finished alder body and an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with dynamic vibrato tailpiece.

Other features include the classic 24” Mustang scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays, four-ply pickguard, master volume and tone controls, vintage-style tuners, and chrome hardware. Available in right- and left-handed models.

Features

  • Alder body
  • 24" Scale C-shape maple neck

  • Seymour Duncan JB bridge humbucker mounted directly to the body
  • Mustang single-coil neck pickup
  • Dual On/Off phase in-out switches for each pickup

A Must Have for Nirvana/Mustang fans

Features:

The biggest improvement on this guitar vs all other Mustangs is the tuneomatic bridge. The Seymour Duncan JB pickup is great and really delivers the "Nirvana" tone, but the bridge is probably the best feature on this model. It stays in tune much better than other Mustangs and the overall feel of the guitar is solid. Doesn't feel like you're playing a cheap, entry level guitar. Also I prefer vintage style tuners so I was happy they are on the guitar. The neck pickup has a nice warm tone and still retains classic Fender tone.

Quality:

The quality on this guitar is top-notch. I have owned a few Fender Japan models and they are every bit as good of quailty as my American Deluxe Strat. I bought the guitar sight onseen from Musicians Friend without ever playing one.(I took a chance because I've owned another Fender Japan Mustang and was happy with the quality/playability. Very nice playing guitar, action was perfect right out of the box. Finish is awesome as well. I got the Dark Lake Placid Blue with the Competition stripe.

Value:

Price is a little high but like I said, the quality on the guitar is top-notch.

Overall:

I definately recommend this guitar to any fans of the Mustang or "alternative" Fender guitars. Don't have to be a Kurt Cobain enthusiast to enjoy this guitar.

Tried this out at my local Fender dealer. First thing I noticed was that humbucker sounds very tight, great for palm muting, soloing and playing metal. Decent cleans as well. The neck pickup is not as good as an American Standard Stratocaster, nor is it as good as a '66 Mustang's, but this is a rock guitar, so it is good enough. It really delivers nice, loose sounding cleans. The neck is very comfortable and looks nice. The guitar is small, but not too small, and is very comfortable.

i recently had a chance to test play this guitar at the nearest guitar center, when i plugged it into that amp and strummed the first power chord.... my god, there was no words to describe my reaction to this fine peice of musical equipment, i instantly busted out with drain you and it was like listening to kurt playing it live (not bragging on my ability, im just saying it took me back to the days of nirvana) im currently in the process of working up the money to buy this guitar, once i add this to my collection, id have to say this would be the best of all of them so far

Incredible Guitar!

Features:

The Dunacan JB gives this guitar a nice ft sound with distortion but can be a little on the bright side on the clean channel. The neck pup also sounds great with a nice warm sound on clean and dirty. It has a lot of different pickup combinations so you'll have to play around a bit to get your sound out of it.

Quality:

Made in Japan Fender guitars are excellent quality. This guitar is no exception. The finish was awesome and the guitar was setup perfect when it arrived at my door.

Overall, this is an excellent guitar with a great playing neck. It takes a little time to dial in your tone but once you get to know the guitar it's a breeze to operate. I've played tons of Mustangs/Jaguars and even Jagstangs but this is by far my favorite sounding/playing Fender I've played in the last few years. Even if you're not a Nirvana fan you should still try this guitar out. I like the fact that it doesn't have Kurt's name on it anywhere and it has the very cool competition stripe. The Duncan JB really makes this thing sing and I love the sound of the neck pickup.

its a very well made guitar seems to be pretty solid

Value:

its a little expensive for just a little old mustang , but it is fully modded after kurts guitars soo if your a kurt cobain fan like my self its a dream come true , but it doesnt come witha gig bag or a case

Overall:

this was my 28th birthday present to my self  this year , ive wanted a mustang like just kurts since i was a littke kid .overall i love this guitar , i love the feel of it ,the way it plays . Its sounds amazing ,  i have alot of other guitars ranging from a peavey falcon to a paul reed smith custom 24 , but for a litttle mustang this guitar packs a punch . the finish is flawless and i really like the color with the competition stripe , altho i dont understand if fender is makeing kurt cobain  guitars why they didnt just go the extra mile and give it the matching headstock like kurts 69 competition mustang. other than that i really dont have any complaints , it doesnt come with case or a gig bag but i got over that pretty quick after i revieved this guitar yesterday . i just went back online and ordered it a nice gig bag ,some extra strings and polish .  ive played it for hours and it seems to stay in tune pretty well . its a great little guitar and i would recommend any one who likes nirvana or kurt cobain or just likes a well made mustang to go out and buy one . its a much much nicer guitar than the 65 reissues with alot of upgrades those 65' mustangs dont even compaire to this guitar .
