I bought this to get an inexpensive taste of a Stratocaster type guitar, and in some respects it is a great value, but overall it's not a fun guitar to live with. The Speedloader system seemed like a good idea, but it's been a pain in the a** more than anything. The vibrato needs 4 springs instead of only 3. Fine-tuning one string causes the other strings to go slightly out of tune, so tuning it is a real balancing act. On the other hand, the pickups sound very good for cheap single coils, and the neck and fretboard are much better than I expected from a cheapo guitar. Speedloader strings don't seem to be commonly available in stores, so keep a spare set in case of breakage.
I could not get this guitar tuned. The tuners got stripped almost immediately. I teach guitar, and I thought this would be a great guitar for my studio, and a fun guitar for performance. I was wrong. This guitar never did get tuned for me. It is very pretty, but without tuning, it isn't worth the money.
First off, when I got the guitar (I got the red one) and tried to play it out of the box, I was a little disappointed. The fine tuners didn't have enough play to get it in tune. I thought I had a blem. Well, I went to the Floyd Rose website and found some detailed instructions on how to reset the fine tuner range. Once I followed the instructions with the included Allen wrenches and got this baby set up, she was awesome! I am very pleased with the DST-1 and that whammy bar is great. This guitar looks great and I'm very happy with it and am proud to add it to my collection.
I have been a Floyd Rose devotee since the early 80's, when there were no finer tuners. When I first saw the Speedloader I knew I had to get my mitts on one. The DST-1 was the perfect chance to get one without arousing the wrath of the wife!
This guitar really is the holy grail for those who love the traditional single coil sound, BUT, don't like having to retune every time after using the whammy bar. I spent several years haunting every guitar shop looking for a guitar with these features , but with no luck. I guess it took Floyd Rose himself to recognize that a need was there, and he acted. All I can say is thank you!!! thank you!!!! thank you!!! The search is over!!!
Overall I am pretty saticefied with this guitar. I played this guitar so far on 6 stages. The only problem I had is that I couldn't get rid of the noise when I use clean sound on the low single pickup. I really feel that I need to replace all single pickups with Bill Laurence pickups.
I was skepticle at first until a music store in Vancouver WA let me use one in a show I had coming up. It played nicer than the American Strat I play, and just for kicks I changed a string on stage during myo ther guitarists solo, and as the store owner said, less than 5 seconds, I was in tune and playing again. The crowd got a kick out of it too. Fast and good action, solid guitar and excellent sound. I bought two.
