    OVERVIEW

A design like no other for performances with timeless flair.

The Johnny A. Signature model electric guitar from the Gibson Custom Shop combines innovative design with vintage Gibson appointments to create a modern classic.

The revolutionary body is completely hollow with an arched and contoured outer surface and a flat inner back, resulting in a guitar that resonates more like a flattop than an archtop. The alluring face of this exquisite instrument is a beautifully figured solid AAA maple top. It rests atop an exclusive Gibson body style and size with back and rims carved from a single block of mahogany.

Johnny A. custom neck profile, and custom pearl fingerboard inlays combine with traditional Gibson features like multi-ply binding, gold hardware, and an Richlite fretboard to create an instrument that captures the magic of Gibson's past while eagerly anticipating the future. Includes case.

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

I have owned this for over two years now and I still just say, WOW! While I own a Fender from their Custom Shop this was the first Custom Gibson I have ever owned. I did not expieriance the 'nut' problem many have stated having but I do have a close friend that purchased one of these and he did. He had it taken care of by guitar builder we both know. I rated mine at 5 stars but at this price if mine had nut problems I would have taken off a star. This just should not be the case with a guitar that is coming out of the Custom shop and in this price range. That is slack on Gibson's part and they should fix that. Back to the guitar. First thing you will notice when you open the case will be pictures just do not do the instrument justice. It is incredibly lite weight and compfortable to play, sitting or standing. Mine came with a perfect set up and intonation was right on from top to bottom of neck. Tone ranges from surprisingly warm to very bright and it really digs in with bite when required and wanted. Yes, I had to put a few more bucks in to this thing than I wanted to but in the end, it is worth every penny. If you get one, you are going to love it. I guess the real judge is, I don't have any buyers remorse and I would buy it again. *Other electric guitars I own. Two Strats, one custom shop and one USA, Les Paul, SG, and a Tele ( my beater guitar) that was made in Japan. Everybody needs a 'beater' for those places and Jams you are just not sure about the crowd. lol

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

I've had mine for 2 years now and am very pleased with it, Bigsby and all. At first, I noticed the 'twang' on my b and g strings when tuning, as others have mentioned. The man himself, Johnny A., told me to try some parafin wax on the nut. That helped some, but the biggest thing that helped was just playing it a lot, both at home and gigs. I never touched the nut, though I had the frets dressed. I just finished restringing it with 10s and after playing it for about 30 minutes, it stays in tune. I play a few Stray Cats covers, and now I do some Johnny A. covers as well. This thing is perfect for that type music - rock, blues, or country. I have used it several times on gigs without picking up my Les Paul. My next axe will be a CS336, but this guitar will remain my favorite no doubt.

This guitar is now my #1 player

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

I've owned my Johnny A. for about 4 years now and I don't go to gigs without it. At first, I was hesitant to bring such a nice instrument to just any gig, but now I feel naked without it. I find I'm getting my own unique tone with mine and it sounds as good on slow melodic intrumentals as it does on raunchy rock tunes, or vice-versa. I take my Les Paul and maybe my Tele, but the JA definitely gets more stage time. The ebony fret board makes bends a lot easier and the Bigsby is always nice to have for a little expression now and then. Aside from that, this thing is absolutely gorgeous. It always seems to draw out any other guitar players that may be listening in the audience - they've usually never seen one or even heard of it for that matter.
The pickups are the common '57 classics. I have 3 guitars with these same pickups and they all sound different, so the difference has to be in the body design. I have a LP classic, a CS356, and the Johnny A. The sustain on this guitar is amazing, especially considering it is a real hollow body (no center block). The design of the body makes it possible to play loud without unwanted feedback. By unwanted I mean there's no roaring, droning hum or ear piercing screeches and squeals; in other words, no unmelodic 'sounds'. However, it will feedback and hold a note forever if that's what want, and that's what I want in feedback. The positioning of the toggle switch allows for easy trasition between neck and bridge pickups. It took a little getting used to for me because of my Les Paul experience over the years, but now I find it effortless. Even with the Bigsby being used (properly, that is), it stays in tune pretty much throughout the entire gig with only minor adjustment needed between sets. The finish is very durable and the neck profile is now my favorite. This is truly a unique Gibson product, pretty avante-garde for a company that seems to stick with tradition.
It is surprisingly light weight and estremely well balanced. The thick solid maple cap is very tough and the body, being basically one piece (carved out like a canoe on the back and sides - all one piece!) is very well thought out and tough. As with all REAL Gibson guitars, the nitro-cellulose lacquer finish requires a great deal of care, but I wouldn't have it any other way on a Gibson. I have other guitars with polyurethane finish coats, but when polished out this finish out shines them all. There was a great deal of finesse used in binding the double florentine body, and the inlays are immaculate with no glue showing around the edges. The finish was perfect to my sight and the shape of the body is a thing of beauty. Overall, the appointments are a work of art, beautifully and tastefully laid out. And the wood quality is top notch, absolutely the best.
I give it a 10 on value because of what I know went into building this thing. Hollow body guitars take far longer to build than solid body guitars, especially when the tops are actually carved instead of pressed. Granted, they use C&C machines for the bulk of it, but there's a lot of hand sanding involved in finishing these things out prior to applying the finish coatings. Compared to the ES335, with a pressed laminated top and laminated sides and back, it seems that this guitar would actually be priced a little higher. No matter to me - I bought it used and paid way less than a new one anyway. Honestly, I couldn't justify buying one new. Of course, the same goes for an L5 (Heck, I couldn't even justify buying an L5 used, but I would love to have one!).

The feel of the guitar is amazing. It is a versitile instrument. Blues, Rock, Jazz and Slide Guitar are all perfect for this amazing instrument. It is one of my choice guitars because the electronics are extremely hi tech. This instrument is the Cream of the crop.

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

Got my Johnny A with a stop tail at the Gibson retail store in Nashville. The guitar is really a quality instrument. It's an excellent compliment to my CS-336. Like the CS, the Johnny A's sides and back are carved from a solid piece of Mahogany; but unlike the 336 it's carved completely out in the middle like a hollow-body and Gibson puts a mahogany block in the center. It's not as warm as the 336, but remains crisp through the mids and highs, and can really growl. Added block or solid, the Mahogany makes the tonal properties A+++. The scale length gives the JA some really interesting characteristics, and the extra real estate has encouraged me to play just a bit outside my comfort zone - which is a great thing. It's another really quality instrument from the folks at Gibson, and while not yet my #1 (gonna be hard to top the CS-336!), it has a really interesting place in my arsenal. For the $$, I believe that Gibson ought to roll with Grovers instead of the tulip tuners, but the tulips look fine and function well.

i bought this jewel in 2009 cause i totally become crazy for Johnny A. albums and sound. This guitar is not only beautiful in the look but also perfect like sound extremely versatile perfect for jazz, blues, country, rock, and fusion. Like sounds is similar to 4 guitars jazzy like 355, bluesy like les Paul, rock like a Gibson Sg and country and twangy like a Telecaster! unfortunately Johnny A. is not popular otherwise this guitar will become the most requiered guitar in the market

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

I have several guitars and recently acquired a 2006 Johnny A. It is now my favorite guitar, with my 1979 ES-335 a close second. The quality is superb! Yes, the price is high, but considering the quality, uniqueness, and factoring in the supply and demand equation...well, it's still too expensive, but not enough for me to give it less than five stars.

I am selling my Gibson Byrdland to cover the cost. The Johnny A is such a sweet, versatile guitar and very enjoyable to play! I like it...A LOT!!

An absolutely head turning, stunningly beautiful guitar that will grab the attention of those who aren't holding it. Terrific sound from the neck pickup and when both humbuckers are in play. Neck has a great feel and the detail on the guitar is pure class. A little difficult to play with .11s but plays like a dream with .10s!

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

The tone of this guitar is absolutely bone trembling, and so smooth at the same time. It's like a good cup of coffee. Plus it takes no prisoners being played with distortion, which most all hollow bodys can't do. A great value, and a good investment, since there is a little more than 300 of the instruments made so far. As you can see here the instrument has already risen in price. See Johnny and the boys when they come to your home town, they are real cool, and give great advice.

I haven't played a guitar that is as versitile w/out feedback ever! I played two big shows with thsi guitar. The 1st show was opening for Aretha Franklin in April of '05. One of my students was kind enough to let me play the guitar @ the show. It sounded great and left me feeling uninhibited by the performance of the guitar. The second show was with my trio opening for Wyclef @ the Sunfest in W. Palm Beach, Fl. I couldn't have been happier. I left my '57 Les Paul goldtop @ home! The first gig in 5 years that I brought only one guitar! It's the only one you really need! I ordered one the next day!

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

Great sound, great playability, beautiful to look at. The only reason for the '9' on quality is that the nut was too tight, especially on the D and G strings: tuning resulted in a "twang" as the strings snapped to different tensions. My set up tech, fixed it as part of the setup I do on every new guitar I purchase, from here or anywhere else.I've played it through Fender Deluxe RI and Vibrolux Custom (the new ones) (sort of a clean and dirty contrast between amps) and it sounds great. It record nicely using my SansAmp PSA1 and TC Electronics G-Force to ProTools (Mix 24 Plus system). The JA does not duplicate anything else in the Gibson line: I've got and LP, and a 335 and it is different than either; also have a CS set neck strat, vintage Tele, and PRS 513: again, the JA is unique in its sounds.

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

On any website Johnny A looks like a Heritage Cherry Sunburst. When it arrived it looked different. But after plugging it in, color didn't matter as much. The inlays/headstock, too impressive, too easy to play, has a sound of its own with Brite-wires, you owe it to yourself to use the Gibson Humbuckers .010, Go ahead - give them a try. You may not go back to brites. My finish on the back is finicky, mars easily, but buffs out clean. The nut was tricky, was clamping the string G string making it difficult to tune. The luthier filed it down. Sweet. The original bridge was bent forward at the factory and misaligned. The luthier installed a new bridge with ceramics, looks better, works better with the almighty Bigsby. So now I have a Johnny-A+.Want to order LP Supreme, for the Pickups and the wood. When nothing else is good enough.

I've played several Gibson guitars in the past years. This one is easy to handle; light weight and well balanced; fits in your lap. The 25 1/2 scale length makes this guitar easy to chord for jazz and blues. I bought this guitar with confidence after reading reviews and doing some basic research. Gibson med string works well with a Marshall amp. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about Gibson Custom Johnny A. Signature Electric Guitar with Bigsby:

I was astounded to see various development models of this guitar in the trade rags. It looked like a wizened Barney Kessel or an SG on steroids. The first thing I did was buy the A's cds and research him--all encouraging here. I called the intrepid Bruce, who sells me guitars. He agreed. This was a revolutionary move by Gibson. This, Bruce said, was worth the trip up to Louisville. We just happen to have one of six quilt-tops in sunset glow, he gloated. Not for long, I thought. Perfect weight and fit. Custom shop workmanship. Neck finish exquisite. All AAA solid woods with a great acoustic ring, feeding a pair of 57s. With 11 or 12 jazz strings, you have a near perfect jazzbox; with 9s or 10s you can do almost anything else. Very well, and with consummate style. Johnny A musta goosed 'em where their genius lies. Best new model since the ES335. Hands down. (Check out the 336 and 356 Custom Shop too!)

The best guitar Gibson has made in 20 years! I have not bought a Gibson in 20 years because everyone I tried was poorly made until I met Johnny A!
