Gibson Custom

A Custom Shop masterpiece.

The SG Special VOS re-creates what was the economy model of the original early '60s SGs. It featured the same slim double-cutaway body as the SG standard, and came equipped with P-90 and a wraparound bridge.

Like all VOS (Vintage Original Spec) series instruments, the SG Special VOS is handcrafted for comfort and playability in the Gibson Custom Shop. The construction, neck profile, hardware, and electronics are period accurate, and a special nitro-cellulose finish treatment gives it the patina of a gently-aged vintage guitar. Includes Gibson Custom Shop case and a certificate of authenticity.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Features

  • Solid mahogany body
  • Nickel hardware
  • Lightweight aluminum bridge
  • 1-piece mahogany neck
  • 22-fret rosewood fingerboard
  • Pearloid dot inlays
  • Single-ply cream neck binding
  • 1960 slim-taper neck profile
  • 24-3/4" scale
  • 1-11/16" nut width
  • Button tuners
  • P-90 single coil pickups
  • 2 volume, 2 tone, 3-way selector switch

It's one of the more affordable Custom Shop crafted instruments and a true classic. Order it today and never let it go.

Awesome guitar

Features:

A basic bare bones SG with a killer tone and one of the lightest guitars I've played. The guitar unplugged just rings with tone.

Quality:

The quality is perfect. Neck straight as an arrow and very well balanced while sitting. I wish a guitars were made this well.

Value:

A bit high for an entry level SG but worth every penny when it comes to tone and feel. Neck is thin and fast. Ibanez neck lovers will flip for this neck as it's perfect for shredding although that's not my thing.

Overall:

Overall Gibson got it dead on with this guitar as I use this more then my 61 SG. Looks are awesome and it has that Pete Townshend vibe as he did use these for quite some time.

Get one before they're gone!!

Features:

I've been an SG fan since I got my first one in 1971. Never should have sold it, but, well, you all know THAT song!

These P-90's seem like they're "magic" ones. Even the bridge PU is useable for rhythm: Not too squanky like a lot of bridge pickups. They also have hardly any hum when played alone. The neck plays itself. Pleked, which you didn't get on the original! All guitars should be set up this way. The thre-on-a-strip tuners work well. I prefer locking tuners mostly because I'm too frigging lazy to turn the peg winder when changing strings...

This guitar has a really sweet tone reminiscent of Scotty Moore's ES-295 and other old P-90 jazz boxes. It has a great sound unplugged and is so light it might lift me off my chair if I were to lose a ton or two!

The non-compensated wraparound bridge might put off some players, but I checked the intonation and it was perfect out of the box!!! (I've had many guitars with ajustable saddles that you couldn't get intonated this well after an hour and a half and a head ache!!!) Plus this bridge is nice and comfortable on your picking hand with no ridges or screws sticking up to bite you.

Quality:

Great quality. The Custom Shop does a fine job. Perfect frets. Perfect setup. What else do you need to say?

Value:

Gave it an 8 because, well, this price for a copy of a guitar that went for less than a tenth of the price originally...

Overall:

Did i say you should get one before they're gone??? Good.

All I can say is WOW!!! What a beautifully crafted instrument! You can sense the love and dedication it must have taken to create such an instrument. The versatility and clarity of tone of the P90s is amazing...the neck so sleek and comfortable...I was instantly at home with this guitar. Certainly, more than worth every penny! Honestly to me, this guitar is far superior in many ways to the one I owned back as a young teenager in the 60s. I'm looking forward to doing some recording with this guitar. I greatly encourage you to give Scott a call for a hands-on description of your "new" Gibson Sg Special VOS. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

I own a real 1961 Gibson SG special and i have played this one and i have to say that i could hardly tell the difference between the two. I play this guitar at a local music store and i thought this guitar sounded great with "Cleartone 10" strings played through and Orange Half Stack. I would recommend this guitar to any Gibson SG fan.
