You can pay more for 'prettier' Gibsons, but you can't get a better sound. Sounds just the same as multi-thousand dollar more gibsons. My only negative comment is on the lining of the case, which became detached quite easily. Now I have to be very careful when I put it away to keep the adhesive from comming in contact with the guitar. If you want to sound like Gilmore playing 'wish you were here' this is your guitar. The strings are very easy to bend due to the 24&3/4 scale. A little *too* easy to bend while playing chords, so get yourself a D28 for that :-)And get yourself a Meguiar's care kit - the acid in sweat will ruin *any* nitro finish!!!I clean mine *every time* I use it with a micro fibre cloth and Meguiar's 'mist and wipe'. I wax it every time I change strings, which is every 30 days and the finish is in flawless condition, even after being subjected to my sweaty uncovered arms. The Gibson strings that come with it are the best sounding. I've tried several other brands and don't get the "ahhhhhh" sound I'm looking for unless I use the strings specifically designed for Gibson Jumbo's.Truly this guitar is Black Gold...

Bought this axe in 2002 and like many other owners found the action high. A trip to my guitar tech - problem solved, nice axe acoustically, plays like a dream now. The electronics leave alot to be desired. Not what they claim to sound like "plugged in" not to mention an annoying ground hum even with using high quality cables, or any cable for that matter. If they are going to cut a hole in such a beautiful instrument they really should put in a better pickup.

Great

By Moi

from Austin, TX

I bought this guitar a few months ago. It is awesome as an acoustic/electric guitar. It is not that great as a straight acoustic. It is not that loud really but it is easier to play then other acoustics I have played. When it is plugged into my tube amp, it sounds amazing. It would probably sound even better plugged into an acoustic amp. I have not tried yet. The controls on it enable you to enhance the sound to your liking. I have recorded with it and like the results a lot. Overall I am happy with the purchase. However if you are looking for a straight acoustic, I would buy something else.

There were only two things abouth this guitar that i wish could be addressed by Gibson. 1ST Was the truss rod had to be loosened all the way to fix the action. it can not be adjusted any more and that was right when I got it.2nd was the finish had flaws in it.but overall i love this guitar.

Great sound at an affordable price

By Danimal-Ev9lN

from Woodridge, IL

I bought this guitar as an alternate to my Alveraz's. After playing it for a week, I don't think I'll play my Alveraz's again. I'll probably just set them up as alternate tunings for certain songs. The Gibson has great action, and sound great. I bang on it all the time now. By far the best guitar purchase I've made so far.

Gotta love it

By ava 50

I have owned and played many guitars in my 50 yrs and this one ranks right up there with the best. Quality of the finish was perfect and the playability was great right from the get go. I can't stop playing this thing! This is a great complement to my PRS electric.

Just what I expected...

Have been playing a Guild 1974 G37 since it was new. I thought it was time to treat myself to a new acoustic. After doing research for about two weeks, I went for the J-180EC.After playing it for the last Two days I'm completly happy. The action right out of the box is fantastic, and the sound plugged in is what an acoustic/electric should sound like. With the exception of a slight blemish in the finish, this instrument is a jewel.I almost spent an extra grand on a Hummingbird. I'm glad I didn't.You'll love this guitar!

my new 180ec was ordered online and came in 2 days ups. it was perfectly cased and packed for shipping. the cardboard box was damaged. the guitar was fine. the paint/lacquer is perfect:showroom quality. the guitar was in very good tune,1/2 step down out of the box.the neck is perfectly smooth. all seams even. the bridge pins are uneven, though. the intonation is very good. this guitar was nicer than i expected. gibson tech ansered some not so FAQ by e mail. i'm very pleased.

Gibson J-180 Special Acoustic Electric

By Guitarman-LTLMM

Wow! I read the reviews on this and decided that I would finally go for a real Gibson. I own 7 guitars--4 of which are acoustic. This guitar blows them all away. It has a warm, sweet acoustic tone and plays like a dream. I am not disappointed and would recommend this guitar to anyone who wants a premium acoustic.

Totally Pro Guitar!

I have owned just about every make of guitar in my 30 years of playing (Gibson, Martin, Taylor, Larrivee, Rickenbacker, Fender, and on and on) and I have never played an acoustic guitar that is in the league both looks wise and sound wise as this Gibson Jumbo. It has the Wow! factor in spades. Performs like a pro and records like the champion that it is. Could not be happier.

Grinning from ear to ear

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This is my first "serious" guitar. I did alot of research and asking around. Dollar for dollar this is without a doubt the best guitar out there. Not only does it has outstanding tone but it's killer looks hooked me from first glance. The only minor problem I have is the action is slightly higher than I'd like to see (already have appointment made for setup). I grin from ear to ear when people put down their martins & taylors for a minute with this axe.

Don't hesitate! Buy it now!

By edman316

The J-180EC Special is a solid spruce top with solid maple sides and back guitar made in the USA. It sounds and plays identical to the J-185. I only had to slightly tune the B string when I got it from UPS. No fret buzz, excellent action and awesome Gibson tone. I LOVE this guitar!

Absolutely Stunning!!

By The Gibsonian

from Wisconsin

This guitar is absolutely STUNNING!! I owned a $2,700 J-185 EC and had to sell it. I bought this guitar a few months later and I'll tell you what. This guitar sounds and plays just as good if no better than the J-185 EC which costs over $1,000 more! Some folks say it's a little quiet unplugged. I think it sounds perfect with vocals. Bottom line... This guitar is worth every penny! Buy it! You will be glad you did!

Melts me like Butter...

By B Cook

from Mercerville, NJ

The second I picked this guitar up, I was completely under it's spell. It's the most b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l sounding guitar we own. And we have 8 others from several major brands. I won't even pick up any other now. There is no need to. NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE A GIBSON.

Great sounding guitar. Easy to play and has great quality and appearance. I played it first at a live jamboree last week. It sounded awesome. The jamboree band really dug it too.

Gibson is the best!!!

By TJ SIMS

from Elk Grove, CA

See all my reviews

Call me spoiled but I feel Gibson far exceeds the other guys in most cases. Look at the quality of this guitar and how much it costs. The other guys are asking a lot more for a brand name guitar with these features. It has a builtin tuner, EQ, volume, tone, etc. which makes it very fexible from room to room. It gets a really clear and sweet tone with lots of sustain to boot. The looks are to die for and playability has been good. The only reason I marked it down for value is I buy Gibson with the expectation they will go up in value so it's also an investment. All my Les Pauls and SG's have done just that but this guitar has remained at the same price. I guess that's good for the folks who need one but haven't bought one yet. Over-all a great looking and sounding/playing guitar!!! But one, you won't be sorry if you do.

Smells Good Too...

By FaST StRAT

from Galt, CA

It was time in my career to buy a world-class guitar. I went to Sacramento and played all the top of the line guitars. I was intent on paying whatever I needed to get the absolute best. I put the top 5 guitars side by side and strumed 'em and clearly the Gibson J-185EC was the best tone and best overall. I play and Fender Eric Clapton Strat. daily but when I get the Gibson out often it's so clear and strong and one last thing... is smells good too. People tell me it would be a good humidor for my cigars.

Making me sound good

By Good Stuff

from KY

It is the best thing I've played. I was initially disappointed because the action was cranked so high. However, after I had that adjusted, it has become the greatest playing instument ever. You will love it.
