The anvil upon which this virtual/real band hammers out its unique brand of death metal.
Inspired by Skwisgaar Skwigelf's main axe, the Dethklok Thunderhorse Explorer is powered by Gibson BurstBucker 1 and 2 humbuckers mounted on a mahogany body to supply the deadly resonance that matches his death growl voice. All the attributes of mahogany come into play. The wide grain, very porous and lighter than most tone wood creates even more of a mellow resonance regardless of the pickup combination. Sustain is maintained but with a warmer approach and makes broader tone versatility easily with reach. The set mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard has a '50s rounded profile that gives Skwisgaar ample support for his muscular riffing. The nut and neck both receive Gibson's revolutionary PLEK setup. The guitar wears a thin grain-textured finish that beautifully shows off the subtle mahogany wood grain beneath the lacquer, and yields a fast, comfortable playing feel on the neck back, too.
To maximize all of this tonal splendor, the Dethklok "Thunderhorse" Explorer is equipped with a calibrated set of Gibson's popular BurstBucker humbucking pickups, which comprises a BurstBucker 1 in the neck position and a slightly hotter BurstBucker 2 in the bridge position, for the perfect output balance between the two pickup selections. Made with unpolished Alnico II magnets and unpotted coils that are wound to slightly different numbers of turns of 42-gauge plain enamel-coated wire, just like the originals, these are some of the finest reproduction PAF ("patent applied for") style humbuckers available today.
Dethklok is both a virtual band featured in the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse, and a real band created to perform the band's melodic death metal music in live shows. Created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, Dethklok is sometimes cited as an example of "comedy rock" on a par with bands such as GWAR and Spinal Tap.
Breaking The Dethalbum's record as the highest-charting death metal album in history, Dethklok's second release, Dethalbum II, debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 in 2009
Mahogany, without a doubt has become the only choice for generations to equip an instrument with the various preferences that most players demand; strong, rigid, light. Milled and cut to the proper 'quarter sawn' wood grain orientation and kiln dried for true climate acclimation, this Central and South American species (Swietenia macrophylla) is highly machinable on one hand but extremely expressible in the hands of a detailed craftsman thereby producing a 'players feel' that feels natural to the human hand. The instruments' neck from many aspects will "make or break" the compatibility of the instrument to the player, but, not as much as how the neck feels and fits. Using time proven classical style angled head stocks and ' Tenon' wood joinery provides a stiff substructure to accommodate string tension and sound transference. Through the center is the same historically proven and recognized truss rod for the fine-adjustments needed to insure ultimate and personalized string action and sustain.
Always dense, always black, always rich in tonal response and resolution Ebony wood provides the natural durability, elegance and esthetic refinement we've come to expect in high quality fingerboard material. The condensed fiber cells make for clean machining therefore leaving a semi-polished sheen that is smooth to the touch creating a surface less prone to finger-tip resistance while passing through multiple cords or blistering solo's. Kiln dried for maximum stability and tonality enhancement to withstand extreme changes in indoor/outdoor playing environments.
Revolutionary Plek Set Up
The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret, virtually eliminating string buzz and greatly improving the overall playability of the guitar. This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours”sometimes even days”to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument "Plek'd" and amazingly playable.

Well I received this guitar Yesterday, I waited for like a month but it was worth it. I own a collection of Gibson Explorers including E2, Pros, and some standard moded. This axe is like every standard explorer + binding and a silverburst. First of all Gibson: The Gibson logo in this axe is a cheap material, looks like cardboard! Even my Standard 08' hasa nice MOP Gibson Inlay! Second the pot cavity is like a trashcan! Not painted, full of holes, messy electronics! For 1700 dolars i would expect more! I got it the same day i received it to my luthier for a Setup (.11), some lemon oil, and instaling EMG 81/60 chrome! I Shame on You Gibson!
Bought this guitar, the neck binding on the treble side of the fretboard was rough as if somebody had taken a knife and had at it for a while, the pickguard was scratched as if someone had been playing it for years, and the frets were uneven in quite a few places. I had high hopes, this product has turned me off of all new gibsons.FIX YOUR QUALITY CONTROL, JIPSON!
I just bought this guitar to day, and I have to say that this is the best explorer I have ever played. The pickups sound amazing!I have 2 explorers, and Epiphone 1984 reissue with EMG's and this one. This is my first Gibby, but trust me, I have spent hours upon hours in guitar stores playing Gibsons. As I stated before, this is the best explorer and guitar I have ever played. The Silverburst is orgasmic on this explorer. The binding really makes it look nice. The neck is extremely comfortable and great feeling. This thing turns into a different beast when you downtune it though. It's very easy to get the Dethklok tones even without EMG's.Overall, this is a great guitar for anybody. I would recommend it to anybody. It is light, looks great, and plays great. Thanks Gibson!
looks great, plays great and sounds awesome on any amp setting i freakin love it buy it...!
Okay so I'm going to be a little bit biased when I say this is one the best explorers to date. I've been wanting a Silverburst explorer for years, and I currently own 5 Explorers, and Gibson FINALLY makes a Silverburst one. Thank you Brendon Small! Now as far as features go it got all of the typical Explorer features you know and love but with complete body and neck binding which is awesome, Silverburst only on the top though, solid Black back. Ebony fretboard, burstbucker pups, which actually sound decent and just the tiniest part makes this a signature model, the truss rod cover. Awesome job Brendon on not making this thing over the top. My only gripe about the guitar is that the pickguard is a single ply solid black pickguard. You think they could have done a 2-ply or 3-ply Black and Creme one to match the Creme binding but oh well. Otherwise it's an awesome guitar ready for shredding! I was surprised however that he went with Burstbuckers over EMGs which seems to be all that Dethklok uses but nonetheless they work. I would recommend this guitar to any Explorer lover or just someone looking to collect because it is a really nice axe, and I think Brendan said it best that it is "all dressed up and ready to go out."
