OVERVIEW

A Les Paul fit for a blues rock titan.

The Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio features a stunning metallic-finish carved maple cap with a mahogany back. The glued, deep-set mahogany neck with granadillo fretboard features a rounded '59 neck profile for guitarists who prefer a chunkier neck, but still enjoy fast, smooth playing action. The BurstBucker 2 and 3 humbuckers have unbalanced pickup windings for the historically-accurate "Patent Applied For" sound with a little extra airy tone. The 'Bucker Type 3 is slighty overwound for more output.

A unique fusion of old and new ideas
Bonamassa played his first guitar at the age of four. By seven, he had stepped up to a full-scale model and had mastered many of Stevie Ray Vaughan's signature licks. At 10 he was playing regularly around the state of New York, garnering attention of blues legend B.B. King. Two years later, he was opening up for King, and eventually stars such as Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Stephen Stills, Joe Cocker, Gregg Allman, and George Thorogood. Bonamassa has lived up to his potential, continuing to develop his own style as one of contemporary music's most profoundly gifted guitar players.

I am surprised by the other lukewarm reviews as I can?t imagine anyone not being blown away by this guitar. Others have mentioned some fit and finish issues. Indeed, the finish on the one I received did have one slight flaw in the black finish at the twelfth fret on the low E side of the neck with a little bubble of paint that is hard to notice. On the high E side there was a very small bubble on the fret board side clear coat. Black nitro (as opposed to an Epiphone polyurethane or polyester finish) is hard to get done flawless and the rest of the black on mine came out great. The Gold Top finish is fantastic! I have the Gibson 50's Tribute LP with P90's and that Gold Top has a non-clear coat distressed look to it, which is cool, but my JB LP has a beautiful, classic, clear coated, true Gold Top sparkle finish that is flawless. I thought about doing an exchange due to the picky finished stuff listed above but I guess I won?t now as I got mine just last week right after they came in (when MF told me they still had ?a bunch? in stock) and now it looks like MF may be sold out on what I understand is a second extra 600 piece production run to the sold out first run. So no return for me because this is simply an awesome guitar! The neck to me is perfect. It is not a 1958 profile ?baseball bat? like an R8 or a 60's slim neck. It is truly a ?59 neck with just the right amount of meat on it. The Plek job was near perfect and playable right out of the box with super fret work. The frets do not feel like overly tall medium jumbos and with the ?59 style neck they are fast. The Burstbucker 2 and 3 pickups scream and have all the output you could ever want. This guitar can do anything from JB?s Jazz, Rock, Hard Rock, heck drop D this bad boy and I think these BB?s could even dish out some Metal! I did not buy the guitar for the JB connection. I had always hoped for a Studio version LP with a beefy neck and the growl of a pair of BB?s at an affordable price. The limited edition nature of the guitar is a cool factor and the black back Gold Top with black trim is a killer combo. It is also a color combination only available as a Custom Shop 1957 or in JB?s Custom Shop LP running for a whole lot more coin. I tried the Epiphone 50th Annv 1950 Version 1 and returned it as it didn?t quite have it all together. I tried two and each had minor finish flaws as well and one that had frets that my luthier felt were going to need a lot of level work done (lots of fret buzz that better strings and a truss rod adjust couldn?t correct). Also, for a 50's version in my opinion the neck was too skinny. In fact, and this will come across as heresy I am sure, I even tried out locally a reissue 1958 VOS (at twice the price - used) and I liked this JB LP better! When the word gets out - watch out. This is an affordable USA Gibson LP (with Gibson case) that IMHO knocks down any stock Epi LP to the floor (noticed I didn?t say ?Studio? as this animal is a cut way above your average Studio LP). If they come back in stock again, and you can swing it, I wouldn?t pass it by. This is destined to be one ?Studio? Les Paul that people will be after for years.

I received my new 2012 Joe Banamassa Les Paul Studio 0n 5/4/12 and was disappointed with the build quality. Out of the case I noticed a deep 1/2" long scratch on the fret board near the first fret, the dots on the side of the fret board at the 12th fret are out of line with each other, the 3 way toggle switch was loose, the knob height on the volume and tone switches varied from 1/16" to 3/16" clearance with the top of the guitar.
I guess Gibsons quality standards have been lowered or the quality inspector was having a bad day! I also own a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Studio that doesn't have any of these problems.
I sent Gibson Customer Service a note listing these problems and still haven't heard from them and today is 5/19/12.
On the positive side this is a sweet sounding guitar.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

The guitar plays great and looks beautiful. Got to play it side by side with the Epiphone version and with a Gibson custom. I was amazed at the quality of the tone with this guitar. It held its own against the custom and was better than the Epi. Great guitar you wont be disappointed.

    Bonamassa Les Paul Shines

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

In this price category you will not find a Gibson with this much style. The Goldtop finish looks like a true custom and the black finish on the back and sides is a great touch to make it stand out.
This Les Paul has the sound of my standard with the appeal of a signature guitar at half the price.
The one I have had a few scuff marks on the edges and two small indentations on the back. The most troubling to me was that the edge of the neck on one edge extends beyond the fret board creating a bit of a shelf. Frets seem smooth and even.
For the money this Les Paul rocks. The sounds available from this guitar are way beyond my talent. A definite must have if you are looking for an authentic Gibson humbucker sound with sustain and grit.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

This is an amazing instrument that is most definitely worth of Joe's name on the truss rod cover. I have several guitars and pick this up more than the others... it definitely has 'the tone' I'm after. Great for blues, rock, pretty much everything. Sustain for days, I think this guitar might be heavier than my Les Paul Classic Custom. Fantastic instrument, I love mine.
Burstbucker 2 & 3 pickups, goldtop, Grover tuners... this guitar has everything I look for in a Les Paul.
Perfect right out of the box, no QC issues with mine.
Might be expensive for a Studio, but I don't think of this guitar as a Studio, it's a Les Paul. In my opinion, worth every penny.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for over a week now and I like it a lot. Cosmetically it is not 100% because there are a few minor blemishes in the fit and finish but not bad enough to send it back. You have to really look to see them anyway. Most importantly the function, sound and playability of this guitar is excellent and except for the intonation being a little off the factory set up was to spec. I also like the weight of this guitar which is just under 9 lbs and is almost 3 lbs heavier than my LP worn brown studio. It would have been nice to "hand pick" one these locally but I couldn't find any so mail order was my only option and I am completely satisfied.

I bought 2 of these. I play one and put one in storage. I just know in a few years this limited run guitar will be a collectors' instrument. Get one while still available!!
This great guitar has that wonderful vintage feel and sound. The neck is perfect and has that solid beefy "real les paul" feel and vibe.
Not one imperfection or blemish. Feels like a Custom Shop. Is a great signature guitar.
For this price, you cannot buy a better guitar.

    This guitar rocks!

    By Greg Horobowicz

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

While the price and the quality issues annoy me a little, this is still a great sounding guitar. It looks and plays like a dream and is just what I was looking for.
While I'm not a huge Joe Bonamassa fan, the unique look of this guitar sold me. Combining a gold top with a black back and neck is visually stunning. The top hat knobs for the neck pick up are a great feature.
The guitar plays and sounds great. It loses quality points because when I first played it and went to adjust the volume knob on the bridge pick up, the knob fell off. The bridge pick up knobs look cheap.
This price for a studio? Come on Gibson.

I ordered two, and they are both perfect. Good job there. Flawless and I am quite through.
I doubt you will find a better sounding, looking, playing guitar for the money. Now the neck is chunky but I have long fingers and large hands. So I love teh way it feels in my hands. The tone is angry and sweet if and when you want it to be.

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

Joe grew up as a strat player. His heart is Fender baby! Well this guitar is average at best typical light weight Gibson nothing special. I must say my custom Epi after extensive fret work, custom nut, new hardware and seymour duncan jazz/jbs sound much better for the same money and plays better than any of my Gibson Standards. Hmm must be the blood sweat and tear I put into this guitfiddle that makes it a winner.

This guitar came set up very well. The tone is gorgeous and the neck feels fast. It does have a chunky neck, but I have not had any problems getting used to it. The pickups are hot and I'm finding that you have to finese this guitar...it will reproduce whatever you are playing accurately. If you're sloppy, you'll hear it.

I am a novice guitar player. I was concerned about the finish on the instrument due to comments of some reviews.I am a mastercraftsman as far as finishes are concerned. The finish on mine is flawless. I took it out into bright sunlight and with a trained eye could find no defects. The color value of the rosewood neck is spot on next to the gold finish.A string change and lowered the bridge and it was good to go. I like the feel of the neck, the sustain of the patient pending Seymore Duncan pick-ups. Made to match the pick-ups of the Gibson 1959 Goldtop. A beautifull looking great playing guitar at an affordable price. I am one very happy camper.

I have always loved the shape and playability of the Les Paul..To me it is the quintessential looking guitar, great body lines, neck profile and electronics. I'm playing this through a CAT5 AVA 22 watt head and Avatar cab with two 12" Celestions 30s. The harmonics are unsurpassed! As with all of my guitars I take them to my trusted tech to have it setup. Had some problems with the nut. It was causing the strings 1, 2 and 3 to kink and it wouldn't stay tuned. But after that was fixed, no problems. Love the Burstbuckers. These things scream and growl like no other. I gave up all of my floor pedals long ago. Just don't need them with this guitar. Finish was perfect. Not one blemish.

You guys know the features a Les Paul has...
Have to give it to Gibson. My guitar came to me without any flaws. I checked it over a few times just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. The setup was also very nice with the intonation spot on...

Comments about Gibson Limited Run Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar:

I just received my Les Paul today and I'm a little disappointed with the back of the guitar. It looks like Gibson sanded the back halfway and decided that the finish would cover up the defect. My made in China Bonamassa LP has a better fit and finish. This one is going back. The good news is that it plays and sounds great. It has a more complex tone than the Epiphone and I liked the neck better, it felt just a little smaller. To bad the Chinese have more pride in there workmanship than there American counterparts.
