Gibson

The voice of '60s classic rock.

What do Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and Tony Iommi all have in common? Back in the '60s, each of these legendary guitarists played a Gibson SG Special with P-90 pickups—and made music history in the process. To bring this beloved rocker back to guitarists in the 21st century, Gibson USA introduces the SG Special '60s Tribute, a guitar that honors the beloved SG Specials of nearly 50 years ago, in an instrument primed with the tone, versatility, and playability demanded by modern musicians.

Since its arrival on the scene in 1961 (originally as the Les Paul/SG Special), Gibson's dual-horned, double-cutaway SG has been an iconic rock axe, and has become known for solid performance and tonal versatility that is unparalleled in the guitar world. The SG Special '60s Tribute is based around the same revered tonewoods, glued-in neck, and Alnico-magnet P-90 pickups that made its predecessor legendary, with the same SlimTaper™ '60s neck profile that is behind some of the fastest-playing guitars in history. Stripped-down and ready for business, the SG Special '60s Tribute has the look and feel of a well-played friend right out of the gigbag (included), and comes in at a price that any hard-working player can afford.

SHARP, TIGHT AND BRIGHT - SG 60's Tribute

Features:

The P90's are awesome.  Such a change of pace from typical Hi gain humbucker sound you see everywhere.  They have a really sharp attack and bite, yet still decent sustain.  They are a bit on the bright side so be ready to adjust your amp eq. But they work surprisingly well with a high gain amp (JVM410). Everything else standard for a Gibson in this price range - nothing more, nothing less.

Quality:

The worn cherry finish is cool. lightest guitar I've played on for sure.  It came set up decently, overall shape was B+, especially for being used.  I must say though I was very disappointed with Musicians Friends packaging job.  The UPS box was actually open when I got it (Poor tape job).  And the guitar was left in a soft case with no other packaging just in a large open box.  Luckily other than a few nicks that were probably already there everything was fine.

Value:

Can't beat the value here.  For well under a grand to own an actual Gibson SG with the craftsmenship you come to expect with the name, you can't beat it.

Overall:

For classic rock sound the Gibson SG 60's tribute is tough to beat. Got some great Santana/Abraxas sounds on the neck pickup my JVM and some spot on Angus Young sounds on the bridge. You can get some great screamin blues sounds or bright 70's Brit punk as well.  Not much use for modern metal sounds but great for anything 60's-70's rock.  Another great addition to any collection.
