I bought this on a whim -- and have found it to be an excellent sounding, soulful, cool guitar. I like its many different tonal options, and it's big fat neck feels great. It is actually very well made, and the quality is high. Normally, I think Gibson's quality is poor - but on at least the one I have -- it was very well put together and final finishing of body and frets is quite good.
Ok, so I received my new SG-3 Fireburst a few days ago and have been trying to figure out what to make of it. I had originally planned to have this guitar replace my old '91 SG Standard... but that ain't gonna happen. This is not a typical SG by any means. If you want that Gibson sound, this may not be the wisest choice of guitars for you. Out of the six pick-up configurations available from the three single coil "blade" pick-ups, most of them sound either like a Strat or a Tele. Being a Gibson man - and an Gibson SG man at that - it is taking me a little time to come to terms with this unexpected tonal surprise. I may return it yet, but I am trying to give it a fair shot. After all, it IS being limited to only 400 being made. Perhaps holding onto it for the time being would not be a bad idea. Despite my reservations, I give this guitar high marks because it truly is a very cool guitar. With a open-mind, it could become a favorite axe.
Just got this guitar 3 weeks ago and really like it. It sounds great, nice and clean but with the potential for solid roughness too. The triple coil configuration is unique and offers a lot of different setups. The fit and finish on this guitar are also top notch. I literally inspected it with a magnifying glass and could not find a blemish or defect anywhere. The fireburst finish is really nicely done and feels great in use.
I bought this guitar in oct. of 2008 I love it. Very nice finish. The back of the neck and body is black. The tree single coil pickups aer very nice. I do not think they have the twang of a telly. I would buy this guitar again if i did not already own it.
I purchased the guitar a couple of weeks ago. I wont go into the shipping details. The guitar is beautiful. I know it dosnt say so but the guitar comes with what I suppose is a nitrocellulose finish. Also this has 6 different p/u settings as opposed to a strat. Neck is pretty thick which is what I like but if you have small hands be aware. The pick ups are awesome and do a good job of imitating a strats shimmering qualities but this guitar can also rock out. I play through a fender bassman reissue with OCD overdrive pedal and the guitar sounds awesome. Havent put it down. I have an american made tele with rio grande halfbreed p/u's and I have just purchased its equal as far as tone is concerned. Only thing I was dissappointed about is that the action came a little high with some fret buzz I worked that out and the guitar is fine.
The sg 3 fireburst with its 3 singlecoils is very versitile in that when you run it clean it is quite spanky,(but not as spanky as a fender strat) but it also runs the pickups hot so it also drives beautifully, all in all an awesome guitar!
I just received mine today, and was very pleased. It looks great and with a couple of small adjustments plays fine. I am a Les paul player and never really like the sg, but I changed my mind with this one. I have played a strat and still have the one I got in 77. It took a little while to get used to the feeling of the guitar but not a big deal, I like the sound of a strat but have alwas liked the way a gibson feels and plays. The Sg has the feel of the gibson and the sound of a strat and much more. The finish is perfect and the fret work is very good. I hook it up to my fender deluxe, the sound was great from country to rock and everything in between. I highly recomend this guitar to anyone, for the price and features.
Well Gibson has done it again. That's all I have to say. Hey it's a Gibson, what do you expect?
