The guitar that won the hearts and minds of a generation.

Inspired by the 1960s SG Special, the Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups re-creates the look and sound of the most influential guitar in both Britain and the U.S. during the psychedelic era. It has the original all-mahogany body, dual P-90 pickups, and a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays.

    A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

I will mention upfront that I'm a Fender guy. I have a USA Tele Deluxe and a USA Strat. I play through a Fender Supersonic. I have a Fender Jazz bass. You get the picture. I've tried the Gibson Les Paul but just never jived with it and went back to Fender. And then I tried the Gibson SG Classic and it now falls between my tele (#1) and strat (#3) as my favorite guitar to play.

I love the P-90s. They are hot and thick, so the guitar offers both chime and growl at the same time. I also really like how light and thin the body is. I always expected this to feel more like a Les Paul but with an extra cutaway on top. That couldn't be further from the truth. It is extremely comfortable. The neck profile is a bit too large for me, but by no means uncomfortable. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.
The neck binding is a nice touch that looks really great with the white outline of the pickguard.
An upgrade in the tuning pegs would earn this a 10 rating.

Well I just received, and then returned this unit. Unfortunately I did not get a lucky as the prior folks. There was a gap where the fretboard meets the body at the end of the neck joint, could have been just the way the binding was cut, but with the deliberate overspay of the finish on the rest of it over that joint, as the neck joined the body along the fretboard, I didn't want to take a chance. (The overspray did not bother me, fyi, the gap at the end did. Though the overspray looked like it could be hiding additional gap, instead of a clean binding job???). The nut was cut so it favored the Bass side, slightly, but I hate that, especially when my finger slides off the edge of the playing surface. Minor, yes but for the current price, heck, it's not an import. And, those have always been good to me, anyway, so am not knocking imports. And, I understood this to be a one piece body. The lower bout below the control knobs on mine was laminated to complete the body; minor but, not what I expected. Also, the tuners, the tiny white knobs, look very lite duty, though the gears looked like the regular tuner. I'd be afraid of the knob twisting off, or cracking some day. Though am sure if properly strung would stay in tune.Anyway, on the positive side, the Soapbars sound fantastic. I compared side by side with 490's and Alnico 5 BurstBucker Pros, they hold their own in tone; to my ear a cross between the two, the 490's to me were a bit briter, but same performance and sound otherwise, if not noticably similar output levels. I didn't get any hum in my playing environment on single selection. The finish itself, was flawless, and, none of the typical ding's and handeling marks I see with great dissapointment. The neck, on this one was beefy and substantial, more so than some other fat 50's necks I've played... they're all a little different I guess. Very nice neck on this one.A final negative, on this unit, did not resonate quite as much, unpluged, as some of the all mahogany units I've played from Gibson. Could be the 9's that were on it. Kind of dead as far as that went, which means the sympathic tones, string vibrations wouldn't be there if one looks for that.Oh well, I'm dissapointed, and not interested in getting into a back and forth shipping struggle, for me anyway. Regards.

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I'm definitely an SG guy, with a collection that ranges from a 2006 SG classic (the least expensive) to a 2002 Gibson SG Custom, and I must say the classic is the best sounding guitar of them all. The P90 pickups are hot and clear, with excellent growly tones even at relatively low volumes. I would definitely recommend this guitar to anybody, especially anybody who plays alternative/punk rock. A great buy.

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I've been playing Fenders for years but had recently brought an old Les Paul Junior to a rehearsal. It sounded so good, I gigged with it but took some heat for bringing such a valuable guitar to the club. I decided that I needed a substitute. So, I went to my local Guitar Center. I played a bunch of guitars with P90's, custom shop Juniors to faded SG's. the best sounding one was the Junior in TV yellow. But, it only had one pickup and I wanted two pickups for extra versatility. The SG Classic was very close in sound to the LP Junior, in fact, all the SG's sounded great but I couldn't hang with the worn and faded finishes. I took it home and compared it side by side with my 59 LP Junior and they sounded almost identical. But, I don't have to worry about losing or damaging my 59 at a gig or rehearsal. I really like the neck as well, not as thin as the old 68? SG with P90's that I had back in the '80's and not as thick as the 50's necks. It is light and balanced and has gotten more comments about the sound than any other guitar I have ever played. The only problem was when I was using a guitar with a fatter neck and then switched to this guitar after an hour of rehearsal, I found the thinner neck of this SG to be more fatiguing. This was never a problem on long rehearsals before, though. All in all, a great guitar for the money and it is cheaper now.

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

This guitar is great! I play in a bar band and the reviews are true- the P 90s can sound clean or growly. You can sound like dickie betts or jack white. They're my favorite pickups. The neck is nice, a little wide but that just makes it more adaptable to slide guitar play. I do agree that the guitar needed to be tweaked from the factory. I had to adjust the truss rod which was something I hadn't ever done before. The tuning machines weren't great. I ended up replacing them ( because my 3 y/o broke one) with kluson deluxe ones, and now I feel like the guitar is perfect. I used to want a les Paul, but this is the guitar for me.

Actaully, a 9.5. I would buy it again if it were stolen. I actually may get another one in the future as a backup I like it so much.
I gave this a 10 for features, because it is light weight, and fancy enough. I don't like the block inlays on the Standard. This one has the easier to read pearl moon inlays. Tuners are ok, they hold tune good enough, I really can't complain. The P-90's are IMHO the best pickups on a Gibson. The clean sounds are amazing, and just crank the guitar volume for some breakup.
I couldn't find a singal flaw in this guitar, and I looked hard.
Only an 8 here, I feel this guitar is still a bit overpriced for what it is.

Great Guitar With A Super Sound

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

If you like the P-90 sound than buy this guitar..,,,,It's easy to pay....the neck feels really nice an smooth, frets are smooth also asxnd you can get the action real low on this neck with no fret buzz!

also the binding on the neck is really nice touch.....just a great all around guitar at a nice low price.....it will be the best money you ever spent on a gibson.
I have a 2004 model and all I can say is that tge guitar is incredible! The workmanship is top notch which lately is becoming rare with Gibson. The P-90's pickups soynd fantastic as expected.

The guitar stays in tunes after playing hard and with a whole lot of string bending. Everything about the guitar is great. The guitar now comes with a gibson hard shell case.
Guitar was perfect when i purchased it in 2004 and still looks and sounds and performs like the day i got it!
The sg classic is worth more than what it sells for.......

Comments about Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups:

I have had my eye on this SG for a while. I have tried and played many other guitars (thanks Musicians Friend) from Gibson Les Paul Studio to Standards, MIM Strats to MIA Strats, Telecasters, PRS, Ibanez and Epiphones to a fair amount of dissatisfaction. Don't get me wrong, those other guitars were all good instruments but never quenched the sound and feel I really wanted. Then this one was available used (condition 3) and I couldn't resist. What a great decision. It plays and sounds so smooth, it's hard to put down. The P90 pups have just the right amount of bite and clean up real nice as compared to humbuckers which tend to be too thick for my liking and strat singles a little to thin. This guitar is light weight and doesn't seem to have that typical SG neck dive. Probably the lighter weight tuners which could be a little nicer but not a deal breaker. For the money, it's a great deal for a "Gibson". BTW, the neck binding was a nice bonus.

Every time I go to my local guitar store and try out guitars i always seem to play this one the longest. I think that means i'm gonna to buy it eventually, haha. The tone that the P90 pick-ups produce are perfect for that dreamy clean sound but can easily pack a punch with some overdrive. The body is thin and light. The neck has a nice feel, not to thin, not to thick. I would recomend this guitar to anyone who wants an easy to play tone machine that comes at a reasonable price.
