Gibson

The guitar that won the hearts and minds of a generation.

Inspired by the 1960s SG Special, the Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups re-creates the look and sound of the most influential guitar in both Britain and the U.S. during the psychedelic era. It has the original all-mahogany body, dual P-90 pickups, and a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Great Guitar With A Super Sound

| Review By: raymond anselmo | 3 months, 1 week ago

Features:

I have a 2004 model and all I can say is that tge guitar is incredible! The workmanship is top notch which lately is becoming rare with Gibson.  The P-90's pickups soynd fantastic as expected.

The guitar stays in tunes after playing hard and with a whole lot of string bending.  Everything about the guitar is great.  The guitar now comes with a gibson hard shell case.

Quality:

Guitar was perfect when i purchased it in 2004 and still looks and sounds and performs like the day i got it!

Value:

The sg classic is worth more than what it sells for.......

Overall:

If you like the P-90 sound than buy this guitar..,,,,It's easy to pay....the neck feels really nice an smooth, frets are smooth also asxnd you can get the action real low on this neck with no fret buzz!

also the binding on the neck is really nice touch.....just a great all around guitar at a nice low price.....it will be the best money you ever spent on a gibson.

The neck binding is a nice touch that looks really great with the white outline of the pickguard.

Quality:

An upgrade in the tuning pegs would earn this a 10 rating.

I will mention upfront that I'm a Fender guy.  I have a USA Tele Deluxe and a USA Strat.  I play through a Fender Supersonic.  I have a Fender Jazz bass.  You get the picture.  I've tried the Gibson Les Paul but just never jived with it and went back to Fender.  And then I tried the Gibson SG Classic and it now falls between my tele (#1) and strat (#3) as my favorite guitar to play.

I love the P-90s.  They are hot and thick, so the guitar offers both chime and growl at the same time.  I also really like how light and thin the body is.  I always expected this to feel more like a Les Paul but with an extra cutaway on top.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  It is extremely comfortable.  The neck profile is a bit too large for me, but by no means uncomfortable.  I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

I have had my eye on this SG for a while. I have tried and played many other guitars (thanks Musicians Friend)  from Gibson Les Paul Studio to Standards, MIM Strats to MIA Strats, Telecasters, PRS, Ibanez and Epiphones to a fair amount of dissatisfaction. Don't get me wrong, those other guitars were all good instruments but never quenched the sound and feel I really wanted. Then this one was available used (condition 3) and I couldn't resist. What a great decision. It plays and sounds so smooth, it's hard to put down. The P90 pups have just the right amount of bite and clean up real nice as compared to humbuckers which tend to be too thick for my liking and strat singles a little to thin. This guitar is light weight and doesn't seem to have that typical SG neck dive. Probably the lighter weight tuners which could be a little nicer but not a deal breaker. For the money, it's a great deal for a "Gibson". BTW, the neck binding was a nice bonus.

Every time I go to my local guitar store and try out guitars i always seem to play this one the longest. I think that means i'm gonna to buy it eventually, haha. The tone that the P90 pick-ups produce are perfect for that dreamy clean sound but can easily pack a punch with some overdrive. The body is thin and light. The neck has a nice feel, not to thin, not to thick. I would recomend this guitar to anyone who wants an easy to play tone machine that comes at a reasonable price.

I got this guitar a while back and absolutely love it. The P90s are amazing, they sound great clean or dirty. The only thing I wished was different is the pickgaurd.....wish it had the batwing pickgaurd.
