One of the most distinct-sounding SGs ever with new colors, new upgrades, and a new price.
The SG Raw Power is the SG au naturel. But it bites, and it bites hard. The SG Raw Power adds another radical dimension to Gibson's best-selling model of all time. Take a closer look and you'll find a solid maple design that creates fresh, brilliant tone previously unheard from any other SG. Even the neck and fingerboard are solid maple. Notes are vividly clearer, and chords are more expressive. A pair of Gibson's renowned '57 Classic pickups provides all the clear punch and muscle of those legendary "Patent Applied For" pickups. All the rest of the basics remain the same: 22-fret solid maple neck, a volume and control knob for each pickup, one 3-way toggle switch, Grover Kluson-style green key tuners, and Gibson's pioneering Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece. I am really enjoying my maple SG. I have owned many top notch guitars and this thing is cool. It does have a nice maple spank to the sound and it is very comfortable to play. The maple fret board feels good. The painted neck is sticky and will need to be broke in. It is a little raw in looks and finish but it is all Gibson when it comes to sound and playability. Cranked it through my 2205 jcm800 Marshall and I am pretty satisfied right out of the box. Some minor set up tweaks but no complaints. I would recommend one if you are playing or collecting. Maple body and maple fretboard on a Gibson? Oh yeah!
I bought this guitar after a whole summer of saving my money (Im 13). I could not wait to get it! When i did i was soooooo amazed. This is a favorite guitar. It is great in weight. You might wanna change the strings, and you should put strap locks on it. Over all, its a great guitar that deserves to be treated with respect and originality.
Perhaps giving this guitar a review is fruitless (they'll be completely out of them soon...I got the second to last Olive Green), but I personally love this axe. First off, coming from a Fender guy, this guitar provides me with exactly the tone and sound that I need, moreso than any other Gibson. It's completely unique, and I've got a fundamentally well playing, GORGEOUS guitar that is very me...I put pickup covers on my Greenie (a huge improvement), and the sheer novelty of the maple is a fantastic addition to the much better tone it provides. There is a clarity to this axe that isn't found with mahogany. Nothing like it, in looks or tone.Gibson factory setup was junk, as is expected...the very first turn of my high E tuner popped it, and so I didn't even get to play it, really, until I restrung that string. But despite the fact that it doesn't have a case, and doesn't ship perfect out of the box, I adore this guitar...and I promise you will too.
Just got this a few days ago. The guitar is very nicely built, quality was near perfect, and setup was almost perfect. There is a bit of buzzing but that is going to happen to most guitars when they go through shipping temperature changes, etc. Anyway, the sound for a maple body and maple neck is pretty interesting (in a good way). The clean sounds are very crisp with nice note separation (specially for the Gibson scale length). With both pickups selected I managed to get a nice 3D type of sound (I don't know how else to explain it). As for distorted sounds I thought they were tight and punchy. Not very muddy to my ears. However, this is the first SG I've tried, so I'm not sure what the standard SG with a mahogany body sounds like compared with this one. As for the neck it is a nice neck, a bit thinner than my Les Paul 50's neck profile, but not by much. To me at least it feels a bit bigger than the slim taper, but each guitar is a little different. Compared to my strat the neck was just as comfy. Overall a nice rock guitar with a nice bright sound, but not harsh. I do most of my playing through a Line 6 Pod X3 Live into a standard power amp and it sounds great. Again, everything is subjective to everyone, but I think for the money, this is a great high quality instrument that will serve a good purpose for many years to come.
I was a little skeptical, I mean a maple SG? But this thing rocks, insane gain, a neck that's perfect right out of the box, I can't express how impressed I am. (I really like the thicker neck, it stays in tune) Just a pleasure to play! If you're an SG fan, you can't go wrong.
I believe this guitar to be one that Gibson should be very proud of. The reason this guitar caught my eye was because it had a maple fingereboard, and they haven't had a guitar like that since the LS-6 in the 1970's. Well, I needed a new guitar and I thought what the hey, so I bought it. I got mine last week and I love the way it plays. The all maple body is very cool, the finnish is great and feels very soft. The tone is very good, it can almost sound strat like with the maple fingerboard. The nitrocellulose finish gives the neck a smooth feel. The Gibson humbuckers are very good, giving it a wide variety of tones. It still has that famous SG fat tone, but it has a bright edge to it. An over all great purchase, and well worth the price. I'm very surprised that it is under a thousand, and I would suggest getting it before the price goes up.
