A while back I played this fine instrument in a local guitar shop. Despite loving the SG shape/feel, I'm not one for humbuckers. that's why I love this guitar! it's an SG that sounds like a Strat, what more could a person ask for?
I have been looking for a single-coil equipped guitar as I already have a Les Paul and wanted that Strat/Tele twang. I've had the opportunity to play Strats and various P-90 equipped Les Pauls, but when I saw this SG I just knew this was what I wanted. I've always liked the look of the SG/Guild S100 style, and the satin finish seemed different. When I opened the box, the first thing that I saw was the black alligator case. Beauty!!! Then I opened the case and saw the white lining and the satin SG and I couldn't wait to play it. A quick tune and plug in and immediately I was taken by the awesome sound. The set-up was great and the frets were comfortable and perfectly dressed. The satin finish is somewhat plain looking, but with the black pickguard and chrome bridge/tailpiece, I really like the rather understated appearance. I can't wait to jam with the guys and see what it will really do.
I am a collector and player with a fondness for Gibsons. On a practical basis, for live playing, I usually bring both Fender and Gibson guitars to my gigs. As much as I love my Gibsons, humbuckers just can't give you that bright, chimey single coil tone that some songs need. This SG-3 solves that dilemma. The pickups are great sounding and surprisingly hot. The six way rotary switch gives you everyting that a strat 5 way does plus adding neck/lead like the center of a Gibson 3 way. I'm not the fondest of Gibson's "worn" finish (it looks incomplete to me), but it is nicely executed here. The natural color is nice as well. The binding, fit and fret work are all excellent. The light weight comfort of the SG body style and a nice medium thick Gibson neck round out the package. This is an excellent guitar for those who like the feel and playability of a Gibson but want to capture that single coil sound.
This guitar is awsome! the neck is not to fat or skinny; for me it is perfect..the finish is cool the only thing wrong was a few spots that seem rough sanded? also the case has a big tear in it.. ..I called Gibson and they said that is how they made them and people are not used to that kind of satin finish..anyway I really started to like it now I love it and won't be sending it back.
I have been a fan of the sg for years.I bought a used gibson iommi sg 2 years ago and absolutely love it.great tone and great variety of tones available. However I was considering getting a fender as well as i needed a little twang tone hear and there.Out came this guitar and I was very excited. It was a little hard to come buy as not many were shipped up here. The guitar is very handsome and very light. The pickups are very hot,I was suprised about the thick humbucker sound I can also get.I play a it through a 50 watt valvestate head and 1960 tv marshall cab or a reverend goblin. It sounds great through both. This guitar is VERY comfotable and easy to play. The pick ups buzz a bit more than i would like.Nice guitar.
