Gibson

A classic rocker with four exclusive new looks.

The SG Standard is an iconic design that is so good, so right, so rock-n-roll that it (temporarily) obsoleted the Les Paul model- 50 years ago. The SG Standard Limited is a classically appointed SG with all of the tone, features and playability of the original vintage model, but dressed in four stunning new finish options—Antique Cherry, Natural Burst, Cream and Vintage Sunburst—all in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Gibson USA SG Standard Limited has a body crafted from solid mahogany in the asymmetrical "double-horned" deep double-cutaway design (Grade-A mahogany under the translucent 'burst and Cherry finishes). A light and supremely resonant wood, mahogany gives this guitar outstanding tonal richness and depth, with plenty of clarity and sustain. Coupled with the SG's characteristic beveled body edge—a big part of this model's distinctive styling—the mahogany's light weight also enhances playing comfort. The guitar's quarter-sawn mahogany neck is carved to a rounded profile that feels superb in the hand. It is glued into the body with Gibson's acclaimed deep-set neck joint, and topped with a fingerboard of baked maple, a heat-treated wood with a dark, rich appearance, great durability and a clear tone. Acrylic trapezoid fingerboard inlays, a mother-of-pearl headstock logo and holly inlay, and a traditional pickguard round out this eye-catching package.

To equip this guitar with equally legendary tone, Gibson USA loads the SG Standard Limited with a pair of its most popular humbucking pickups. The 490R in the neck position is made with an Alnico II magnet and wound to vintage specs for plenty of warm vocal tones with impressive clarity. The 498T in the bridge position has an Alnico V magnet for more punch, and a few more turns of coil wire for a hotter performance overall, giving you everything from meaty crunch to searing leads. Your tone is anchored by the classic pairing of a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, with a set of vintage-style TonePros™ tuners installed at the other side of the PLEK-cut Corian nut. Add it up, and the SG Standard Limited is one cooking slab of mammoth vintage mojo.

Baked Maple:
Aging maple through a “baking” process called torrefaction. The wood is kept at 200-300º F for a period of time until the wood knows it’s no longer a tree; Moisture is restored under pressure. This makes the wood very hard, sonically “live” and extremely stable. The snappy sound of ebony, with the look of medium-brown pau ferro. Many boutique manufacturers are now using this because it improves the wood with no chemical treatment, it’s environmentally friendly and is great for making better sounding and playing guitars!

2011 SG Standard = Super Guitar

| Review By: Barry Reich | 5 days, 18 hours ago

Features:

Got this one in "Natural Burst", I've had it about 3 weeks and I can't put it down.  Truly excellent "action" and very comfortable to play, unlike a "Les" it doesn't outweigh an F150 so after pickin for 30 minutes it isn't a strain.  If I had to play one guitar forever this would probably be it.  The fit and finish are great and the humbuckers are as good if not better than any I've ever heard.  So if you're on a budget, spend a few extra bucks over a "Epiphone" SG and get yourself one of these, you'll be lovin it!

Gibson SG Standard Limited in Cream

Features:

I bought the SG Standard Limited in Cream. This guitar blows me away. I have alot of high end guitars, Les Pauls, Gretsch,USA Fenders and SG's... THis is my favorite guitar to play. The neck is super fast and the guitar is well balanced. The action came out of the box Awesome. This is the first guitar I've owned that didnt need a set up. I have a 61 reissue SG and I like this guitar more. It plays and feels better in my oppinion. Im going to buy another one in Natural Burst becaus i fear that the "Limited" means it wont be around for long. If you play SG's BUY THIS GUITAR.

Quality:

The Quality is top notch and is more pleasurable to play than my 61' Reissue

Value:

This is a good price for the quality you are getting. I paid almost twice this for my 61' reissue.

Great guitars are not Cheap, and Cheap Guitars are not Great.

Overall:

My favorite guitar to date. This SG is perrfect for me. The big neck makes leads easy and lightning fast shredding. the action is awesome. I can play Jazz,Rock-a-Billy, Metal, and Punk with this with ease... and of course it will do AC-DC... This is a very versatile guitar. It does anything I want it to do and sounds great doing it. When I pick it up and plug in, I end up playing it for hours...Its a pleasure to play.

Cream of the crop

| Review By: Todd Linse | 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Features:

The Gibson SG has a lot of great qualities that I made me a fan. The fact that the controls are located at the bottom and out of the way of my fingers when I pick. The pickup switch is in a good position too. The neck is engineered well and in an efficient location. Most guitars it's hard to reach the 22nd fret but not in this one. The color is unique. The cream color is pretty and in my opinion looks better than the standard colors ie. ebony and red.

Quality:

The thing about Gibson that takes some getting used to is the position of the bridge. It is a little bit lower than most guitars I have played ie. Fender. The guitar came in perfect condition with no blemishes in the finish. Also, it came with an exceptional guitar case. It has a hard shell and a very snug interior that keeps the guitar from moving around.

Value:

It's a great value. You get a lot of guitar for your money. Also, one can't go wrong with purchasing any of the Gibson guitars.

Overall:

The thing that really stands apart from it's competitors is the craftmanship. This guitar is built really well and has a nice coating to protect the finish. I love the sound of this guitar. The body is solid mohagany and the neck is thick and solidly constructed. Maybe the biggest surprise is the quality of the pickups. The sound is great and is a definate keeper for many different genres of music. The pickups are hot but don't have too much distortion. I am very happy with this guitar and look forward to playing it for many years to come.

SG Standard Limited

| Review By: Thumpmyloins | 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Features:

I just got the Natural model and it's even better in person. Plays very smoothe and rips like my Les Paul but much lighter. I am actually considering selling one of my LP's now because of hoe uncomfy it has become and I have been a LP guy for many Years. The neck is a bit bigger and rounder than the 61's but even with smallish hands I find it more comfortable and less fatiguing to play. I must correct one thing the neck on the standard has the fatter rounder neck not the flatter, wider neck like the 61's and there is a big difference for those that are considering any SG model.

Quality:

Not as neck heavy as other  older SG's and a good strap solves this anyways. Built like a tank all hardware is shiny and durable. The frets are perfect and fret board is nice.

Value:

Not bad price for a USA made Gibby but I think it could be priced in the new Strat range would be better but overall can't complain.

Overall:

I wanted a lighter version of my LP and this is as close I can find Not sure why the natural is listed as limited since I have had a couple before over the last few Years but whatever it's still very cool. Gibson makes superb guitars and I have owned and own many now and never any qc issues. I think that gets blown out of proportion on guitar forms by folks who don't own or can't afford the Gibson they really want.

Very Nice

| Review By: DAVID STIBBE | 1 month, 3 weeks ago

2 people out of 4 found this review helpful

Features:

Excellent craftsmanship.  I purchased the Natural Burst, absolutely beautiful.  I like the shape of the neck, the action is nice and low, did have to raise it just a touch- buzzing strings on #6 and #5.  Nice large fretwire.  The pickups are good, a little mid-toned.  This guitar is very, very light and has a nice balanced feel.  I'm used to 25-1/2" scale and this being a 24-3/4" scale, it took a little while to get used to it.  Good tone/volume knob setup, similar to my Les Paul.

Quality:

Quality could not be any better.  Well constructed, solid, beautiful wood grain, solid bridge.  The baked maple fretboard seems to be very good, strings slide easy on it and it doesn't show any signs of indentation.  The sound the guitar produces is very good along with the sustain.

Value:

Value, a little pricey and no discounts allowed from Gibson.  But, Fender also doesn't allow discounts.  So what's a guy to do?  You pay the price and get the great quality and support that Gibson offers.

Overall:

Overall, a great guitar.  No picture could show you how beautiful and how well made this guitar is.  It's a joy to play, good sounding, very light, easy action.  The only thing I would change is to not have the plastic piping  on the neck profiled to the fretwire ends.  I would rather see the actual fretwire extend out to the necks full width, the plastic is a little slippery.
