OVERVIEW

A special model model with a mahogany body and traditional neck feel.

The G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy HSS fattens things up with a G&L AW4368 alnico bridge humbucker to complement the vintage G&L Alnico V single-coils in the neck and middle positions. The Legacy HSS has that ideal balance that’ll let it play well in a variety of settings.

This limited-edition model features a transparent red finish over a mahogany body and 9.5" fingerboard radius.

The Legacy HSS brings all of the Legacy features, starting with Leo’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system which functions on all three pickups for dramatically more variety than the vintage setup. What’s more, the Legacy HSS features a Leo Fender-designed Dual-Fulcrum vibrato, a work of engineering art that allows bending up or down with unsurpassed stability, while offering a silky feel through its beefy aluminum vibrato arm.

If you’re looking for that extra power to properly rock the house but you don’t want your classic Elvis to leave the building, then you owe it to yourself to check out the Legacy HSS. Once you play a G&L Tribute Series, you’ll never look back. Case sold separately.

G&L Legacy Tributes are very similar to comparably priced Fender/Squier offerings (MIM Strat Standard, Squier Classic Vibe) but have some pretty significant differences.

Sonically, the G&L PTB circuit is vastly more flexible than the traditional Fender Strat tone system. It takes some getting used to, though- with all knobs at 10, the Legacy will sound a little brittle, so you have to get into the tone knobs. Once you do though, the guitar sounds wonderful and has a much wider tonal range than a Strat. You can still get the traditional '50s Strat "quack," but you can get thicker tones as well.

The G&L trem system is MILES ahead of the traditional Strat trem- it's MUCH more stable and allows bending pitch up and down. It's kinda like a cross between the Jaguar and Strat systems, with the best of both and none of the drawbacks. It has a "full sized" trem block.

The neck is a little wider and flatter than the normal 9.5" radius strat neck. That took a little getting used to, but now I'm fine with it. The satin finish on the back of the neck felt kinda cheap and rough, but about 5 minutes of polishing with your choice of automotive polishing compound will smooth it out. It still won't be a gloss finish, but it'll feel smoother.

The only negative about this particular model is that the bridge humbucker doesn't come with a coil split switch like the regular Legacy HB. That's a real drag for a 16K hot 'bucker. However, the pickup is still 4 wire under the hood, and after 30 minutes of work and a five buck part I installed a switch myself (it's a pretty easy mod, Google it if you're interested). Now I can switch back and forth between "traditional" bridge tone and humbucker.

Some of the fret ends on mine needed filing and the frets were kind of rough- fretwork is about par with Fender MIM Standards, but the Squier CV series fretwork I've seen is always immaculate.

For the superior trem and tonal options alone, I'll take a Legacy Tribute over any non- USA Fender

This guitar looks like a strat and sounds like one. It has very playable neck, and beautiful appearance.

Now to the problems.
I made two attempts to get this guitar. Even at stupid deal price (30% off) it was not worth it. The first one had misaligned neck - the 6th string was too close to the edge and when playing it would slide off the fretboard. It was not playable and I got a replacement.

Again the neck is misaligned on the second guitar (althought not as badtly). The felt washer under the strap button was missing which caused a big crack on the laquer surface. String 2 and 3 buzz when played open and on every fret (ever after I made sure that the action is set up correctly).

I would say that the quality of these guitars (made in Indonesia) is inexcusable. That's a shame because being properly assembled it would be a nice instruments with good pickups.

Side note. Musician's Friend is correcting the description right now. At the time I bought it there were at least 2 mistakes in the description.
1. This guitar DOES NOT have coil splitting on the humbucker bridge pickup on the contrary to what the description says.
2. This guitar has standard Fender scale length, not Gibson scale as claimed by the description

I am pleasantly surprised by the obvious care taken in the fit and finish of this guitar...set up is well done, I changed strings, tweaked the nut slots, and some slight action adjustments and she plays great and stays in tune! The pick ups and PTB system on tone controls work as described, and the tremelo is smooth and solid!! I highly recommend this axe over other S guitars in this price point...and she sure is pretty!!!

This is a great instrument. If you like a weighty guitar like I do you'll love this one. The finish is great and there are no sharp edges on the frets. When you slide up and down the neck it's nice and smooth.
The pick guard on this particular guitar seem to have player scratches on it but it played great.

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy HSS Painted Headcap Electric Guitar:

I just received my guitar yesterday and spent some time playing and tweaking it. I've have been playing guitar for over forty years and have owned and still have many top notch guitars. This one is definitely up there as one of the best even though it a lower priced guitar. Most importantly it plays and sounds great right out of the box. The humbucker adds a new dimension to the bridge pickup although it isn't a coil split. Also of note it comes strung with 10's which is ok but if you put 9's on you'll need to make some adjustments.

        • Replaces my USA 62 Reissue Strat

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy HSS Painted Headcap Electric Guitar:

Surprised - it has real personality and substance. The single coils are about as good as my 62 Reissue Strat, and the humbucker is very articulate and warm. Positions 2 and 4 have the beloved Strat quack too.Very small blemish on the back but you have to look to find it. The fret board is really well done with rounded fret ends and level action. The interior cavities are (surprisingly) clean of polish - something I have never seen on a USA Fender, not that it really matters but it's a nice touch.

The most important thing is the sound, fret board and hardware. This guitar covers all three bases very, very well. Now I can do SRV and AC/DC on the same instrument! And, it's light weight and easy to tote as well. That was surprising because the 8 - 10 USA G&L's I've owned were generally pretty heavy.

Been looking for years for something to replace my beloved 62 Strat for gigs. The 62 has the tone but can't do full and warm bridge pickup leads, and there are times that I wish I had something other than vintage fret wire and a 7.25 inch radius. Also, the G&L tremolo is much more usable. I think this G&L will be perfect.

        • Bridge Humbucker is hot.
        • Excellent finish
        • Good starter guitar.
        • Sounds like a Strat.
        • Tremolo better than Fender.

        Cons

        • Action too high.
        • Feels like bare wood on neck.
        • Setup was poor.
        • Some fret buzzing

        Best Uses

Comments about G&L Limited Edition Tribute Legacy HSS Painted Headcap Electric Guitar:

I have to say I'm not a big Strat fan but wanted to get a cheap Strat like guitar for my music room. I'm more of a Gibson Guy. Okay. So I got this guitar as a Blem, I expected some issues. The finish was prefect, couldn't find a thing wrong, not one scratch or any defect. The neck was straight, harmonics good, but the action seemed too high. I lowered the strings a tad and that's when things went south. I got allot of fret buzz on the low E and A strings on several of the lower frets. Then I noticed that the nut was also off set about 1/32" to the bass side sticking out over the edge of the neck which made the high E string side pulled in about the same amount. Things weren't lined up correctly. The nut needs to be re-set and something done to get rid of the fret buzz so the strings can be lowered a little, other than that it's a pretty good guitar for the price I paid. One thing I don't like is the lack of a finish on the neck. They went to all the trouble to put a painted head stock on this guitar and didn't finish the neck??? Makes the guitar feel cheap. I may send it back. I haven't made up my mind yet, since I have a few weeks to think about it. I've been playing guitar all my life (50+ years) and know how to work on them, done several mods on Fender and Gibson guitars and some others. I think this is the cheapest guitar I've ever bought. Thing is this guitar sounds good through my Deluxe Reverb, the controls are tight and work well. I'd say it's worth the money but I'm used to little higher quality gear. So maybe that affects my feelings a bit, I may try to fix the issues and perhaps keep it or sell it to one of my students. IMHO it's kind of like a Squire vs. Fender in over all quality. Keep in mind the price.

Bought this for an extra guitar for certain songs because it was a great deal and I've had great luck with G&L. When it came it had about a 4" crack in the finish. (Btw the finish is very high gloss. The pic suggests it's not shiny. It definitely is) it's a nice guitar but the handling at the factory should be better.

I've had this guitar for about two weeks now. Required a slight truss rod and string height adjustment (a couple of the strings were buzzing at a couple of the frets). Plays well now. Beautiful finish. The back of the neck has almost no finish. Feels ok but not what I'm used to. Pickups sound good (very stratty). The humbucker sounds good as well. I like the tremolo, it's very smooth and seems to stay in tune well. Good deal for the money, comparable to a Mexican Fender.

I bought this as the stupid deal of the day. I was really disappointed. The frets were extremely, and I mean horribly sharp. The pickups sounded very weak, I prefer the mim fender strat pickups to these. I usually like unfinished necks but this one felt like a cheap toy....kind of a plastic feel. It basically felt like I was holding my sons squire mini. I returned it and plan on going for something different.
