Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

Here's my honeymoon review of this guitar. Had it a week now. Got the tobacco sunburst one. Been playing for about thirty five years and always wanted a tele. I was looking for that twang stuff that none of my other guitars could get. Played lots of Mexi fenders and I really liked most of them. Then I picked up one of these in another store and liked it even better. As much as I liked the fenders, the thing just sounded better. IT also seemed to be more solid and a more quality build. Hot is not a good word to describe the pickups on it but they are definitely not subtle like the fenders, which seemed a little thin to me. It is said that these guitars dont sound anything like a real tele but I disagree. The middle position on the selector does get that twangy, sparkle but with more punch. It can pull off Stones stuff w/ no problem too. Dont care for the bridge pickup but I didn't like it on the fenders either. Too trebbley. I play it through my Supersonic. On clean with a tiny bit of chorus and delay this thing is outstanding. The setup is good but I know I can get it even better. The finish is absolutely perfect. Beautiful paint and clear. It stays in tune. Also sounds great with a little bit of gain added. I dont like the sound of it on high gain but that's not why I bought it. The pick guard is boring, no pinstripe. This is a GREAT buy new but you can pick these up used for dirt cheap. THAT would be a steal. Trust me, I wanted to have something to complain about but I really cant. 25 years ago, foreign guitars were absolute junk. Now they compete with the US stuff with no problem.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

    DESC: Tobacco Sunburst/Maple Fretboard.
BODY: Beautiful color/finish> The Swamp Ash body is a tone giant!. Single ply pickguard is poor at best and doesn't lay completely flat in spots. Other body components are solid. Controls are smooth operating.
NECK: Gloss back/fretboard. Tuners operate smoothly. Really nice overall fit/finish. Neck feels good with smooth playablity. Frets not undercut, but edges are smooth and not a problem. A few minor fret buzzes.
PICKUPS: MFD with 3 position toggle.
Neck - nice bloopy/twang using tone knob.
Middle - (neck/bridge) best tone to my ear with nice full tone/sound. Nice harmonics too.
Bridge - Very trebly, but when you roll vol/tone back kinda gets muddy.
OTHER: Guitar is not balanced well and wants to dip downward toward headstock to a horizontal position when using a strap.
OVERALL: A decent Indonesian guitar for the price. Very playable right out of box. Comparable to a Mexican Tele. For me the G&L has a nicer neck, and a big plus is the swamp ash body.

Initial Reaction: Love It But Take Note!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

I just took delivery of one of these, in Butterscotch, and I have to say I love it!

I consider any tele to be a niche guitar and this is no exception. It is built and set up to produce a specific sound.

Still, the tone knob does in fact produce a range of alternative sound (darker, naturally)which is more than I can say of some of my other guitars.

More importantly, the pickups are absolutely fantastic, at least when played through my Blues Jr. III.

I was worried, some say the factory pups are too hot for a tele, that the guitar as equipped is soul less. Not to me me, these things ring out more clearly, with more punch than anything else I own. They respond well to attack, and do so consistently across the range. We'll have to see how they break in but at this point they are great, better than my Texas Specials and my ProBuckers.

In addition, like the tone knob, the pup selector switch produces a nice array of very nicely balanced sound. Not startling, not unrelated but a nice progression.

As for fit and finish, this Indonesian guitar shows well. That said, it is, to me, a small step down from my MIM Strat and my Korean guitars. In fact, it is that same small step down from my Indonesian Epi Les Paul Standard Pro. Small things, e.g., an itty bitty tiny tiny bit of exposed neck glue and the not perfectly glossed bottom edge grain of the maple fret board, the plastic knob on the pup selector. Small things that no one but one of us will ever notice. Of course, this cost a couple of hundred less than the Epi.

Mine came out of the box set up and ready to play. YMMV.

The Butterscotch photographs a bit brighter and more consistent than it really is, at least mine is a bit more 'natural' than I expected. In addition, the grain shows a soft maple painted looking 'gray' instead of a more traditional reddish brown stained grain. I do a lot of woodworking and know maple quite well. This guitar carries an excellent treatment of a classic maple look, but you have to like maple and the grays they can produce, and like it buried under a mile of soft gloss. I like, again, YMMV.

    Hope this helps.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

This is my second telecaster. My first was a 1994 American Deluxe butterscotch blonde ash body Fender. That guitar sounded great and played easily. This G&L sounds great too and the craftsmanship is fantastic as well. This guitar came right out of the box setup perfectly for me and with no buzzes or problems just like the FADT did so I have to say I was very surprised with the quality at such a low price. It is every bit as playable as the FADT and the tone is really great with the MFD pickups. So far I've only played it through a Blues Deville but I plan to play it through my 5E3 and AB763 Deluxe and deluxe reverb when I get some free time. I'm sure it will sound great through those amps. You can't go wrong with this guitar. Quality is top notch.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

As a recovering drummer, I picked up guitar recently. This is my first purchase for myself, although I have bought quite a few guitars over the years for my sons (Mexican Fenders, G&L, Washburn, Seagull (2), Squire (3), Yamaha, Music Man, old USA Sigma). Of all of them, this is the best made, best sounding! (The Washburn, Seagulls, Sigma, and Yamaha are acoustics.)

This guitar is full of great tone. I looked at other G&Ls, and chose this one due to the USA pickups. It is well built, the setup was almost perfect (I adjusted the low E string after changing strings to Elixers) and it plays beautifully. I couldn't be happier. I recommend this as a great guitar at this lower price point.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a nice telecaster to hit the blues with. Since I had ordered a Fender awhile back and it arrived with a warped neck that looked like a midwest highway, I decided to go with a G and L ASAT Tribute. I ordered the Butterscotch Blonde. The packaging was great and the finish was superb. The neck and frets were very nice, however there was a buzz. G and L needs to pay more attention to the nut slots as the A string was cut too low and the E (high) was not cut enough. Also, although the neck is easily adjusted, G and L should pay closer attention to setting the neck to allow better action, as the guitar I received was set too low. I thought about sending it back, but made my own adjustments and now it plays easily. I really dig the MFD pickups.

Currently own Gibson's, Fender's and an Ibanez AG95 (great guitar). I purchased the G&L ASAT Classic to keep in my office as an inexpensive "bang around" guitar. But after having played this baby - I'm keeping it at home and using one of the Fender's at the office. Fit & Finish is superb, electronics look and sound fantastic as do the machined parts. As good as my best Fender that cost about 3 times more money.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

Having owned several MIM Standard Telecaster's over the years, I developed an affinity for the ash-bodied, maple-boarded variety. Furthermore, IMHO, nothing says Tele better than a blackguard in a natural or butterscotch blonde finish.

I already own two (2) ash-bodied, Standard Tele's, one natural and one butterscotch, but I had to have another; that's when I found the G&L Tribute Series ASAT Classic in Butterscotch Blonde.

From a visual perspective, the ASAT Classic screams "vintage", with its glossy, tinted maple fingerboard, butterscotch blonde body, single-ply black pick guard, neck/bridge single-coil pickups and 6-saddle, ashtray bridge. It really is a beautiful Telecaster with a very classy look.

Here is where it gets interesting. I plugged my ASAT Classic into my 15-watt tube amp and I heard something that I have not heard until now. It's difficult to describe in words, but the MFD (Magnetic Field Design) single-coil pickups give the ASAT Classic a very distinctive voicing that is all its own. They produce a very melodic, full-bodied sound, with lots of dimension and harmonics. At the flick of a switch or the twist of a knob, you can move from clean & crisp to warm & smooth, from country ballad to rock mayhem! And, YES, there is a ton of volume/tone control under those knobs.

With regard to price/quality, the G&L Tribute Series Tele's are about on par with the MIM Standard Tele's, IMHO. The MIM Standard Tele's have come a long way and have set the bar, in terms of quality and workmanship in their class. The G&L Tribute Series ASAT models are a not-too-distant second...

If you're looking for something different in a Tele-style guitar, then look no further than the G&L Tribute Series ASAT Classic. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

Very nice take on the classic blackguard Tele, with great modern features - frets, six saddle bridge, MFD pickups. Mine is very light compared to my Fender Tele, and it plays like a dream! I could not be happier with this guitar.

I would not hesitate to grab this guitar as low cost/high quality alternative to a butterscotch Fender. The MFD pickups are different than traditional Tele pickups - a bit more towards the P-90 side of things.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

The Tribute ASAT came ready to play out of the box. The neck and the string height, intonation, fit and finish were all perfect. The other guitar player in my band is a professional luthier who looked over my ASAT Tribute and said he could find absolutely nothing wrong with it. All I did was add some strap locks and immediately started gigging with it. After 2 weeks of playing shows I did slightly tighten up the cord input jack nut, but that was a very, very minor thing and it has not been a problem since. I've also had to do the same thing on my Les Paul Custom every few years or so, and I consider that just a basic maintenance thing that all guitarists should check on any guitar from time to time.
Other than ease of playability, the thing that makes this guitar really shine is the tone. It does not have a traditional Fender tele sound. The G&L pickups have a unique tone that is a little warmer and much fuller sounding than a Fender tele. The solid color finished bodies of the ASAT Tributes are made of basswood, and the translucent finished bodies are made of ash. Mine is a solid color finish and the basswood adds a nice tone to the overall sound spectrum of this guitar. From my research, I understand that all the electronics in the ASAT tribute are the same exact ones G&L puts in the American made versions of the same guitars.
In short, this guitar is a definite step up from the standard Fender MIM Telecaster, has a unique tone, and has a fit and finish usually only found on American made guitars. My other electric guitars are a Carvin Custom Shop Strat and a Les Paul Custom. This guitar plays as well as either one of those.
A lot of my friends are afraid to buy guitars without playing them first. I couldn't find any stocking dealers for G&L within 100 miles of my home to try one. I had no problems ordering this G&L guitar from Musicians Friend because they have an easy return policy on guitars. I returned an acoustic guitar to them years ago after UPS put an extra sound hole in the front of it with a forklift, and Musicians Friend shipped me a replacement and I had it within 2 days. I knew that they take this G&L back if I didn't like it. Don't let that fear keep you from trying out this guitar. It's an awesome guitar that won't disappoint you.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

Got the tobacco finish and it looks great. Great hardware, I really like both pickups - good 'honk' from the bridge, and very warm tones from the neck. I love the middle position - nasal clean - also.

This guitar is all about "clean" sounds, it just doesn't do distortion well. Clean rock, country, surf, R&B, Chicago blues, Stones - sounds top notch, especially for the finger-picker. I had to set it up to a bit - mild neck adjustment, lowered the strings and intonated. Very easy set up.

The hardward is very nice. The tuners are solid, and I love the "ash tray" string-through bridge. It is hard to see from the pic, but it is the same "side walled" bridge used on the US ASAT. And again, I really like the pickups for clean playing - including chick'n pick'n.

My only complaint is the metal plate has a scratch below the tone knob. However, everything else looks so good - the swamp ash with the tobacco finish looks outstanding - I simply was not willing to send it back. Also, the pick guard is sort of boring so I may replace it some day. I might also upgrade the P/U switch because I see the US version uses a better switch.

I bought it when they were running a special on purchases four ninetynine or more, so I feel I got a very good deal on a very nice guitar.

I give it four stars because of the scratch and the slightly lower-grade pick guard and PU switch. Also, it doesn't come with a case or even a gig bag.

Bottom line: If you want a nice Tele but don't want to spend a grand+, go for it.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

A lot of times I do not know how seriously to take some reviews because players are at different levels of expertise, commitment, musical challenges, talent and experience. A newbie may think that a certain low-end guitar is amazing whereas the experienced pro will be more critical. That being said, I am not a newbie. I have been playing, practicing, recording, teaching, etc for over 40 years and have owned all of the big name guitars. I play jazz, old blues, (Fats Waller, Gershwin, St Louis & Delta types), and classical music, all on my electrics. I have recently purchased the G&L Tribute ASAT Classic T-style, Candy Red and have added it to my collection. I had been thinking Am Std Tele and friends of mine who are pure Tele players recommended the G&L ASAT. Here is my take on this instrument.

                        1. Construction -- as good as my Am Std Strat, my other Tele and Les Paul.
                        2. Electronics -- Excellent. The electronics "feel" solid. The pots, cable jack and pups are above average in stability and definition of tone.
                        3. Tone -- The tonal qualities are as good as any of my American Fenders and not only better than my LP, but more tonal variation.
                        3. Playability -- Exceeded all of my expectations. Plays as well as all of my expensive, ( >USD 1000.00) guitars.
                        4. Looks -- I bought it because it is red, I like red.
                        5. Upon arrival -- Some people expect their guitars to arrive after 3-4 days brutal freight, temperature changes on wood and strings that are not broken in and play like it just came back from the luthier. This is very unrealistic. These are instruments mad from natural product, not telephones. I take all of my new guitars straight to my luthier for a complete going over and assessment. I have never heard of a guitar arriving in perfect condition. Therefore, I can say that this instrument arrived on time and in as good of condition as all other guitars that I have ordered over the Internet or purchased off the rack.

Solidly built....and what a neck!Tried out Fender Tele...not so impressed. This thing has a crystal-clear sound when put through clean sounding amp.Swamp ash is heavy, but the sustain goes on forever. The finish, hardware, and overall quality all top-notch.With the good comes the not so good.If you can do the setup yourself, you better have some one lined up to do it.The set in one word is BAD.And I don't mean "Good" bad....I mean terrible. They evidently follow a guide line that ensures the thing is assembled correctly, but little attention is paid to the setup...string height, intonation etc. They just put them together and ship them out it appears.I'd bet the more costly ones(made in America)are set up and ready to go.With that said, once set up,its a heck of a guitar...the best I own. They look to be trying to out do a Fender Telly, and that they do............

This is a very nice guitar. I bought a Level 2 "blem" that might have been returned. Miniscule belt buckle mark on the back, but hey, I got it for a substantial discount. Butterscotch finish is nice, neck is straight, plays really nice right out of the box. String tray is a tiny bit crooked, but I will adjust next string change. Soundwise, this guitar is awesome. I play through a Peavey Classic 30 tweed, and it sounds great. The bridge pickup gives me that classic Tele twang, and the neck goes from nice mellow to growling depending on the volume position and my pick attack. I would certainly recommend this guitar for the money!!!!

G & L has made a quality guitar. The craftsmanship is impeccable. It has a great feel and sound. It's a little on the heavy side, but the wood grain is really nice, being swamp ash. It has slight fret buzz, but his is probably just set up. In comparison to Fender at this price point, G & L surpasses Fender in quality and craftsmanship.

Great tone, right out of the box. MFD pickups are very dynamic and responsive. Action and feel are all very good. I had a '52 Tele reissue many years ago, and this plays every bit as good as the Fender, but it sounds much better, because the pickups are more versatile.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Classic Electric Guitar:

The G&L tribute series, and especially my ASAT classic, are fine guitars. The G&L electronics and hardware are very very nice, and the sound from the Leo Fender MFD single coils is just amazing. It's really hard to believe how much value you get for your money from G&L. The fit and finish of the wood (made in Malaysia from rock maple and swamp ash) is just fine. The tone and sustain I get from this guitar is amazing. It's worth getting a professional setup if you don't know how to do it yourself. The brass bridge saddles (individual) make it a breeze.

Anyway, even after a month and time to let the honeymoon die down; I still can't believe how nice this guitar is- period- but even more so for what I paid.
