G&L

Familiar body, bolt-on maple neck and Leo Fender-designed jumbo single-coil pickups.

The G&L ASAT Special just might be the quintessential G&L guitar, viewed by many as Leo’s ultimate single-cutaway. Back in 1985, Leo Fender launched this model under the G&L Broadcaster name, which prompted a response from Fred Gretsch of Gretsch Guitars over the name just as it had thirty-five years earlier. History buffs will recall that the Broadkaster name is owned by Gretsch, and once again, a Broadcaster from Leo was required to have its name changed. This time around, the name became "ASAT," which is US military shorthand for an "Anti-Satellite" missile.

The ASAT Special, as the model became known, features jumbo single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups, each with a narrow bobbin aperture for a coil that is shallow yet wide. In this regard, an MFD jumbo single coil is similar to a P-90 or Jazzmaster pickup, yet the MFD principle provides a punchier bottom end and brighter top end sparkling with harmonics. Leo further departed with the past with the addition of his innovative Saddle-Lock bridge which transfers string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. The result is one of the most versatile guitars ever, serving up ballsy twang to searing blues to smooth jazz tones. What’s more, this ASAT Special is offered in either a traditionally G&L Swamp Ash body for maximum attack, or a mahogany body for that righteous ‘80s G&L blend of jumbo MFD power mellowed by the high porosity of mahogany. Two great ASAT flavors, yours for the picking.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

If you're moving up from a cheap first guitar I would get this over a mim Fender. Sound is better, feel is better. Not a fan of "blueburst" or the look of the pickups but sound and feel are what this has to offer.
Fit and finish are great. After five years pots are not scratchy. Stays in tune and intonation is good. Love the bridge.
Pickups are louder than my mim Tely. so I roll back the guitar volume just a bit to get the same reaction from my pedal settings.

This is an awesome guitar. You can even drop it a few times (on a rug) and it still stays in tune. Perfect tone, weight and playability.

Bridge saddles feel great on wrist; no sharp saddle screws like some Fenders. Unique sound from bridge pickup. Best bang for buck I've seen.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

Sometimes I read these reviews and get the feeling that a five star rating from a customer is only five star because that person bought this particular product. Know what I mean? ie Chevy's are best, because I own one. I find the negative comments are sometimes more informative.
That being said, this is a very nice guitar. I wanted a Telecaster, but have been disappointed by Gibson and Fender and feel that sometimes all you get are the name.
I tend to discount reviews with superlatives and absolutes but the reviews for this guitar were spot on. It is a beautiful instrument. I especially like the bridge and the pickups and the ringing sustain. The pickup switch and tone and volume knobs feel solid. There is enough Chinese throw away junk out there for you to know what I mean.
The finish is good, love the blue and the smooth back. The neck finish, smacks of Music Man, Ernie Ball, slick as a baby's bottom.
I can honestly recommend this guitar. It is as good as or better than an American Standard Fender Tele.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

I received this guitar a little over a week ago. I unpacked it and gave it a strum. To my amazement, the guitar was actually in tune. I mean the UPS man delivered it at the end of the day in the middle of a heat wave. If there was ever an opportunity for the guitar to get out of tune and warped it was that day, and it was all good.

The build quality seemed really quite good for the price point. It was way better than the MIM Strat I bought a couple of years ago. The action was nice. Not too high. No discernable fret buzz. The thing that really appealed to me was the ringing sustain of the guitar. I could really feel it, even when the guitar wasn't plugged in. Really bell like sustain.

The pickups are amazing. A lot hotter than standard tele style pickups. The sustain is clearly audible here as well. The bridge pickup is biting and brite and the neck pickup is darker and growly, without getting too muddy.

Overall the guitar is really quite amazing. I would pay a lot more money for this guitar. Way better than the comparable Fender tele. Do not hesitate to buy one o these. You will be totally stoked.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

Best thing I can say about this ASAT is the sound. Swamp Ash makes gives this guitar exceptional tone. One important thing I did was to swap the 3 way circuit style switch for the Fender 4 way blade switch. Pickups will ground correctly as these covers are plastic, and the control plate will fit it without modifications. I always swore to myself I'd never play a tele, but this blew away my misconceptions. I can get anywhere from Tele twang (not that I use it), to P90 and even Fender Mustang tones.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

I've had this for a little over a month, so I can't really comment on how it's going to hold up in the long run, but my experience so far: great player, pickups sound great, lots of spank, very sharp bite, roll back a bit on the tone and you've got a whole lot of variety with this thing. I got the blue, which as a satin finish neck, apparently the brown one has a gloss neck. I really like the satin finish. Neck is a little thicker than I'd prefer, but I like a really thin neck. The neck is thinner than Fender Tele's that I've played. Frets are larger than on a lot of Fender's, but smaller than on most Gibson's. Good weight (I don't know exact weight), but with Strats and the like I find them too light, and the strap will slide around a lot on your shoulder, LP's etc, tend to get pretty heavy on your shoulder after a while. This is somewhere in between the two. (Blue is ash, so it may be lighter than the brown.) Finish on this thing looks great, stays in tune for days. Needed a set up out of the box, but every guitar does (even the high end ones that are set up perfectly at the factory.) After set up was able to get a pretty low (not extremely low) action with no buzz, intonation is spot on and stays that way. I also own a couple of Gibson's and US made Fender's. This thing plays and sounds just as good or better than any of my other guitars. I have also owned some lower end guitars in the past, and you can definitely tell a difference in quality, playability, and sound. Not with this instrument. This is the least expensive instrument I own and it's up to par with any of my other guitars. Great value.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASAT Special Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar in January 2012, before this model appeared on Musician's Friend. At the time, the G&L website said that both the Blueburst and Tobacco Sunburst (which I have) were made of swamp ash. G&L has since updated their page to show the Tobacco Sunburst made from Mahogany. Mine must be mahogany, because it is heavy, every bit as heavy as my Epiphone Les Paul. The weight of the thing is really my only complaint.

The guitar itself is incredible. The two single coil pickups are rather huge. They really look like P90s to me. You can get that good, heavy, chunky, distorted humbucker sound if that's what you're going for (with no noticable hum). This guitar is so much more diverse though. It also delivers if you're going for a slightly overdriven bluesy sound, again with no noticable hum. The two G&L pickups are just phenominal!

Over the last year, I have fallen in love with the Telecaster body style. I now own five of these things, including this one. My G&L is far and away my favorite. Everything about it (tuners, hard tail, frets, finish, pickups, etc) is high-quality. It was even setup well out of the box.
