OVERVIEW

An innovative mahogany body, topped in flamed maple with a set neck and tappable humbuckers.

The Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar was inspired by a recently uncovered drawing of a prototype done three decades ago by G&L co-founder George Fullerton. The design represented Leo Fender's vision for G&L's first 24.75" scal guitar with three tuners to a side. It was designed jointly by G&L's longtime VP of engineering, Paul Gagon, and his close friend and former collaborator, Grover Jackson, founder of Jackson Guitars.

Although its DNA is full of rock guitar history, it breaks new ground for G&L: it has a set neck, a Leo-inspired headstock with three tuners to a side, and a 24.75" scale to put it squarely on the classic side of the rock'n'roll stage.

Add in a TonePros tailpiece and coil-tapping humbuckers specially designed by Gagon, and you have a gorgeous, high-performance rock guitar that's simultaneously strikingly new and steeped in rock guitar history. Case sold separately.

This thing was set up perfectly right out of the box. Nice tonal range and simple operation. Push/pull knob changes pick up configuration as advertised. For the low price you get a whole lot of well built guitar, which is a G&L Tribute hallmark. I played a few MIM and lower end USA Fenders, and USA Gibsons (studio) while looking for a classic rock ride with humbuckers, and this blows them all out of the water in terms of sound and build quality. Sure, you could get a better guitar if you wanted to spend a whole lot more cash, but in my particular situation it wasn't necessary. My second G&L.

I'm a long-time G&L player and I own an ASAT Classic, a Legacy, and the Ascari with P-90s (which is fully awesome), so when I saw this one on sale, it was an easy decision to order it. When I got it, I plugged it in and it sounded great. It also was surprisingly playable right out of the box with nice low action, no fret buzz and decent intonation- which was surprising since these Indonesian guitars don't normally come with a good set-up.

Now the bad part. I soon noticed there were a variety of cosmetic issues with the guitar, most notable was a nasty cloudy haze covering most of the headstock, underneath the finish. Also, the control knobs were both set crooked, and there were a couple minor defects in the finish and hardware too. Due mainly to the visibility of the headstock blemish, I elected to exchange it for another one, and Musician's Friend was very accommodating.

Now the really bad part. The second one I received had the same ugly blemish on the headstock. In fact, I never even played it because I knew it would be going back too. This guitar also had been poorly packed and was missing the styrofoam disc that should've covered the 3-way switch. Possibly because of that, the lid of the box had been pushed down against the bridge to the point where the strings and saddles had shredded though the foam bag.

I initially asked for yet another replacement, but when I saw how many 'open-box' items there were available, I thought better of it and requested a refund instead. I think these issues might be widespread and sending a third guitar back would've been a big hassle. Its too bad because if it had not been for these very avoidable quality control issues, this Ascari would've made a sweet addition to my collection. C'mon G&L, you can do better.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

After 30+ years of playing and luthiery experience, I am a little salty and generally not easily impressed. I was looking for a new axe for my office and was considering the EVH Indonesian Wolfgang, but could not get past paying that for a guitar made there. I know there is a surge of guitars coming out of Indonesia by many companies, but I was not sold. So I came across this beast on MF clearance. I looked at the reviews and watched the videos and decided for that price it was worth a shot. If it sucked I could send it back and if it was OK I could put some EMG's in it or something for a beat around guitar. Well I cannot believe how sweet this guitar is!!! Right out of the box the action was perfect. Low and loose, ready to shred. It's probably a little to low for many players. But I like it low and generally spend time doing a set up on all guitars. Not this one. Neck was nice and straight (IMHO relief is just a cover up for poor fret work), the fret work was accurate and the pickups sounded far better than most cheapo stock pups. The neck is pretty thin with a flat back. It is not Ibanez Wizard thin, but a little thicker than a Jackson DKMG neck. Frets are bigger than medium/jumbo to me, but not like Dunlop 6100's. Very playable and fast, just right. I love the short scale (24.75") mixed with a shred ready neck. I may roll the fret edges at my first string change, but it is not 100% necessary. Build quality is superior. If I din't see the label on the back saying it was made in Indonesia I would have sworn it was built in Korea at the World Music factory where they make PRS SE, Schecter, ESP Ltd and about any other high quality import. Pickups are clear and have great harmonic content. The split feature is pretty cool. Looks are awesome. Flamed maple carved top strat with block inlays and 3 + 3 headstock! C'mon, that is pure genius! Like a PRS and a Strat had a baby. Way more guitar than the money. I would go on tour in a minute with it. BUY ONE!

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

First of all KUDOS to MF!!! I purchased a scratch & Dent, and was only concerned with play-ability. I did not care about some playing scratches as I leave lots of playing scars on my guitars (it's all part of having an aggressive right hand picking technique, and putting lots of hours in). This guitar in trans-black was perfect, and is one of the very few (playing > 40 years) that I did not have to setup before I could play it!! And BTW....I could not find scratches...so...already leaving my own !

The guitar sounds and plays great....the pickups are real decent and will probably stay (another rare event for me not to swap them out). The rest came out of the box perfectly (frets, neck, truss, the important stuff, etc.).....It's definitely a keeper, and with the 24 3/4" scale, it is just what I wanted for a dual Humbucker alternative to my many Strats !!!

I use this guitar just to jam and mess around. Its good for that. Has a deep rich tone through my VOX. Its a bit heavy however. But I don't mind. Feels like a les paul in weight.

Comments about G&L Tribute ASCARI GTS Electric Guitar:

I own several (not a lot) of guitars, including a G&L S500 from around 1995. I've always enjoyed playing that guitar so when I got the urge to look for another dual humbucker guitar, I was intrigued by the Ascari. I was somewhat concerned that the guitar is made in Indonesia. So, I read the reviews (including the one in Guitar Player), went online and watched the demos and decided it was worth the shot, especially when it came on SDOD.

You know how a lot of reviews qualify their ratings with the phrase "for the money"? This is a really good guitar. Period. You can spend a lot more on a guitar and you will likely get some additional quality. The question that any player has to answer for themselves is "is it worth it?" This guitar simply sounds great and was easy to play straight out of the box. The humbuckers are powerful, but clear. The coil-splitting feature is a "nice to have" for me - I wasn't particularly looking for this. The most important part is that the guitar sounds great. (I play it mostly through a Vox AC15, in case that helps.)

Having read some of the reviews, I spent a few extra minutes going over the finish, the binding, etc. I didn't see any issues at all with mine. Everything on the guitar looks neat and professionally done. The wood has a nice amount of flame - not an extreme amount, but enough to be noticed. I have the red finish and its a really sharp looking guitar.

A couple of minor things: the pickup selector feels a little "loose" when I toggle it. Its quiet when I use it, so I'm just going to keep an eye on it. But it isn't an issue at this point. I'm also not in love with the tuners - they're very basic, no name tuners but seem pretty solid. (The S500 has locking tuners that I've come to like alot.)

Bottom line is that I'm really happy with the guitar and have gotten a number of compliments on it from others. If anything happened to this guitar, I would definitely buy another.

This guitar was advertised as being in mint condition, it was not. The front top pickup cover was dented on both sides and there was a finish flaw. The guitar is a great guitar, everything functions perfectly, it plays well and sounds great. Musicians Friend, sent a new pickup cover, gave me a rebate and a store credit. It should have never been advertised as being "mint" This is the second time that this has happened to me, buying guitars from them.
I had to take this guitar to a luthier for the repairs, this is an inconvenience to me.

This is a great guitar for the money! Don't let the small price tag fool you. It's well made and has great feel and sound. I've been wanting humbucking pickups on a guitar, and this one has it... however, the coil tap feature is also fantastic giving you single coil sound versatility. The only complaint I have is a little bit of fret buzz, but a setup should fix this problem.
