OVERVIEW

A double-cutaway hollowbody with Filter'Tron pickups and Bigsby tremolo in special finishes.

When the Gretsch R&D team recently unearthed a Baldwin-era Filter'Tron pickup with knockout punch and phenomenal twang, they incorporated its DNA into dynamic new "Black Top" Filter'Tron pickups, which now endow Electromatic hollow-body instruments such as the G5422T with an electrifying new voice and identity.

The G5422T Electromatic Hollowbody FSR Electric Guitar comes in a factory special run finish. It's a sharp Gretsch guitar with a bound double-cutaway hollow body featuring sound-post bracing and elegant bound f holes. Other features include a maple neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and hump-block pearloid inlays, silver plexi pickguard, three-position pickup switch, classic "G" arrow control knobs, rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge and Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece, vintage-style open-back tuners and chrome-plated hardware.

I am very happy with this guitar! Here's a fairly in depth review:

The stain is beautiful, the grain of the wood is very nice. The fret inlay is better than appears in photos. The photos represent the stain color well. It has a nice weight, without center block it's not bad at all. I really love the neck profile, I would say it's a D profile. The flatness helps for playing barre chords frequently which strains my hands on rounder necks.

Pickups sound amazing, Gretsch really has a characteristic unlike other hollow bodies. It's a guitar you can play with tonally; often an electric can become a bridge pickup only guitar, whereas this can be varied and still sound good in my opinion. I haven't had a feedback issue at high volumes, but moderate distortion sounds best. I would go with center block model if you want to turn the gain up high. The Bigsby is really great. Tuning stability hasn't been a problem, any guitar with vibrato is going to slip out of tune. It's staying in tune better and better as I stretch them properly.

Intonation has been a slight issue, the Adjusto Matic is actually a Secured Adjusto Matic. It is drilled in rather than floating, which I assumed it would be. Adjusting the saddles fixed 2/3 stings with issues, low and high E. The others were fine at factory setting (which it seems to be that on a typical floating bridge that the saddles are set specifically in a sort of staggered position, whereas this fixed adjustomatic's saddles were parallel) The one problem string has been the 3rd string G. It was sharp on 12th fret and around 2nd and 3rd frets oddly. I carefully filed the nut slot on the G and it helped a lot. I don't want to file it more but I did get a set of d'addario 3rd wound strings. I'll try them when the time calls. It's mostly better. They say intonation can never be completely perfect for all strings simultaneously. It's pretty close.

It was mostly a barre F# major that just sounded off unless the G string was slightly flat. So I thought maybe the fretwork had an issue, but nothing seems off from the appearance of the fret bar. The neck seems true. The action is perfect so I won't be adjusting the truss. Anyway, filing the nut helped enough, I'm sure the 3rd wound will help. They say these guitars were originally strung with much higher gauge strings and that's why people often complain of tuning instability in these types because most people use 9s and 10s. Nevertheless, this guitar plays and sounds great.

Superb build and excellent neck and looks.
Will change the bridge with a roller bridge and that will allow the Bigsby tremolo more latitude in movement, smoothness and tuning stability. Its one grate guitar.

This beauty is stunning with perfect fit and finish. The pic does not do it justice. It ranks high on looks. The sound can cover many types of music, even Jazz. The neck is very fast and confortable. It's very easy to play. It required no adjustment and was nearly in tune when I received it. It's a keeper.
I highly recommend Musians Friend for online purchases. They always come thru with price, delivery, the best packing and customer satisfaction can not be beat. Musicians Friend will always be my first choice.

This guitar is well made and gives you that "Great Gretsch Sound" at a Great Price !!!! I have no complaints about the guitar, but I want to warn potential buyers of this guitar, that if there isn't a piece of foam between the wooden bridge base and the guitar's body and there's a little tag attached to the bridge's adjustment posts that say's something like secure adjustomatic bridge, that the wooden bridge base is actually glued to the top of the guitar so that it can't slide out of position. This feature may be a negative for some but I think it is probably beneficial to most, since most guitarist use lighter gauge strings today than the gauge strings that were used when Gretsch originally designed their guitars.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars Special Edition G5422T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I am truly blown away with this beauty.
I had my doubts at the beginning with the guitar being made in Korea, but once i saw her and play her, all my concerns went out the window.
The color, finishes, oh man.... Are fantastic.
As for the tone, bite and sound, ... Impressive very impressive. Sound amazing even unplugged!!!
The sound of this beauty is so versatile that you can't only play rockabilly with it, you can cover pretty much every kind of music genre, i guess in hard rock i'd draw the line.
The guitar arrive to my hands in perfect intonation, i just had to make so little adjustments, the action is just perfect.
I got her out to a gig the very next day a got her...no issues there, like I would have played her all my life.
The cherry on top to my Parker, PRS, Fender and Gibson arsenal.

Bought an Amber Stain Gretsch 5422 that was a demo...must have had a little glitch, but I can;t find it.
Long ago, I had an early 60's Gretsch, and this one is easily as good...the build quality actually seems BETTER than the old one, and the neck and playability is as good...these have the second best neck of any guitar I have ever played in over 50 years.

Great pickups, especially when adjusted and the tuners really hold tune very well. This is a VERY FINE instrument, and if you have any problem with it being made in Korea, forget it - this is among the best guitars I own, versatile, great playing and great sounding!
