My local guitar store got this in new last week. I've been looking for a guitar with p90's. (check out Neil Young's Old Black)I was going to change out a DBZ with HB's with drop in replacement p90's. Tried this Hagstrom. Wow ! What sound through tube amps: new Laney and old vintage Fender Deluxe. The fit, neck, and playability of this guitar were the best I've experienced in a long while. (Last time I felt that was with a 60's vintage Gibson 330 w/p90's. Didn't have the $3000 for that) So, when I found this Hagstrom, I snagged it today. MF I hope you read this and start carrying these again. Some of the tele'e I have purchased from MF, I've p90's put in the neck position.
- Was this a gift?:
...jumped aboard the Hagstrom band wagon! I believe Hagstrom should have priced this this beauty much higher than they did as I suppose people pick an arbitrary price point and test several makes/models at that point. If this guitar was price another $200 higher they'd still compete for being the best sound available. This is just a REAL sweet guitar. You can read about the guitar's features...so I'll just point out the things that amaze me. An amazing variety of tones can be produced by the P90s (much better than what I could get out of the Hagstrom F-300). The set-up and intonation was excellent right out of the box. The tuning heads are the finest quality I've ever seen come stock on a guitar (regardless of price!). Finish quality is exceptional. The neck is REALLY comfortable and fast. The fret wires are excellent and smooth (I'm usually disappointed by the fret work on similarly priced guitars). With NO effects or pedals...this thing produces a very Eric-Clapton-Cream-era sound. [my primary amp is a 1963 Gibson GA-8-T tube combo) . I own 10 guitars of various brands/price points...the F-200P is an excellent guitar and an UNBELIEVABLE value.
Okay, so mine was made in China, and they put one of the pickups in backwards, the fret ends need to be filed, and the tremolo bar seat unscrewed itself, but this is one amazing guitar for the money! The P90-type pickups are awesome, and I don't know how it's wired, but the middle position does not cancel hum and sounds absolutely incredible. The bridge pickup sounds just okay (a little quiet), but I have to take it out and flip it around, so that might put it a little closer to the strings so it sounds better. The neck pickup ROARS!The neck is very thin and very fast. The intonation was dead-perfect out of the box. The composite fretboard is very very nice. The tuners are top-notch. Nut looks pretty good; I might take a file to it to lower string height. Tremolo bridge is good but will need more springs (came with 3) when I put a set of 10's on it. Nice design. Finish is very nice (creme). This guitar has top-of-the-line components, and very good build quality, but it seems the final assembly was a little shoddy. I'll gladly put the hours in on the frets, tremolo setup and pickup reorientation...I played this thing for 3 hours out of the box even though the fret ends were tearing up my fingers. It sounds that good. By the way, I play through an old 20-something watt ENGL Jive tube combo (open back). The dynamics with this guitar and this amp are amazing. Probably not as great with a solid-state amp.
I'm a singer/player and gig 3-5 nights a week but to be clear, I don't play a lot of lead guitar. The fit/finish of this guitar is your standard overseas product these days (which is pretty good) but the truss rod and machine heads are superior to others in this price range. It lost points with me for not having individual tone controls. On the other hand, the P-90's are a unique sound living somewhere in the middle of standard single coils and humbuckers. Cool! Don't know how they compare to after market brands but I can tell you that they are VERY responsive to pick dynamics. I string it with 11-52's and play through a blues junior or an old Garnet and this guitar really pushes when you lay into it. It loves tube amps! Dunno about solid state. If you're looking for a guitar sound that compliments the non P-90's in your band ..give it whirl. At this price you can't go wrong and if it matters, I get a LOT of compliments on it's looks (I have the cream model with white pickguard). I've had mine for a couple months now and am using it more than my G&L because it just acts/reacts differently. You also won't need to re-set your EQ every time you switch from a strat style guitar. Nice! I think it's a pretty versatile guitar and it's comfortable for 4 hour gigs. If you're looking for a guitar that actually IS unique and not too pricey, you can't go wrong with the F-200P
This axe is one good find.I don't know how hagstrom guitars have alluded me ,all these years!Clearly, they have it goin' on!The p-90,s are VERY similar to the Gibson P-90.,no cheap "knockoff" .The neck is comfortably fast.It ,to me,is somewhere between a strat and an Ibanez. The frets are huge but need filing, the only half-gripe I could come up with. This beauty is a keeper, great price!
I took a gamble and bought this guitar off ebay with a hagstrom hardshell case (never had played one in my life). This guitar is extremely well made, its so smooth to play and the neck is very comfortable. It is sort of a cross between a SG and a Strat, the P90s sound amazing and have that very vintage sound. Great if you are into doom/stoner rock. The tremolo is as soft and easy to use as an american made strat, and you can either get that muddy SG heavy sound or smooth almost ethereal jazz highs. A must try for someone looking for a very well built off-brand guitar, I would easily pay a lot more for this guitar.I have owned it about 4 months and it is still in top shape. The only complaint I have is the tone nobs dont offer much variety, but with the 3 way switch you can make alot of different sounds, enough reason to consider trying something different. After playing this guitar for a while, even gibsons feel very rigid and rough in my hands now that im used to this. I am thinking about trying some of their other guitars now.

i bought this guitar mainly for the looks (i got the cream colored one), and i was blown away by the quality. this the nicest guitar you will find for in this price range. i've played a les paul for a few years and i wanted something with a different sound. the p-90's are great.
This is an unbelievable guitar for the price. Not only does it look killer but the features on this guitar make it worth every penny and more. The unique fretboard material is like silk! After owning this for a few months, I truly do believe now that Hagstroms really have the "Fastest Neck On The Planet." The P-90's are great if you're into blues, classic rock, stoner rock or doom - they sizzle! I own the black/silver model, and wow does the finish shine, the pictures here don't do it justice. The bridge is a little tricky to work with if you're not familiar with the type.I was wanting an SG type guitar, but not necessarily a Gibson or Epiphone like EVERYONE else has. I'm glad I went with this one. Hagstrom is one of those fantastic brands that you don't see everyday, making this guitar a real head & ear turner!
