Comments about Hagstrom Jazz Model HJ-500 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:
I was noodling around for a few months trying to decide which Jazz box to buy. Ultimately I decided on a second hand HJ-500 (with Hagstron case) which I got for AU$600.I fully intended to:1/ use only flatwound strings2/ use only the neck pickup3/ play only jazzI tried two sets of heavy flatwounds, including a ridiculously expensive set of Tomastiks, and found they did not do justice to this great instrument. After reading the Tuck Andress web page and noting that he uses Ernie Ball roundwounds, I strung the HJ-500 up with 11, 14, 18(plain), 36, 42 52 Ernie Ball roundwounds.WOW what a difference - gorgeous tone, lovely smooth harmonics.I made my own wooden saddle that was exactly compensated for the string gauge I was using and the intonation is now perfect.I love this guitar !!!The composite material (faux ebony) fretboard plays like butter and the neck is slim and fast. The neck is so well made the relief (curve) can be virtually zero without buzzing. As well as the classic jazz sound from the neck pickup, it has a great range of other, brighter sounds, when the bridge pup is used.Apart from the saddle I made, the only other mod was to pin the bridge to get the exact positioning of the high & low E strings in from the edge of the fretboard.Superb value for money and a superb instrument - period.

While I was waiting for the Viking to become available I decided to try the Hag HJ-500. I had an Epiphone Casino on trial but I wanted to compare it to the Viking before deciding. The HJ-500 arrived it it's hardshell case which I immediately opened. The sight of this instrument in it's plush case almost took my breath away. The cherry sunburst finish is absolutely gorgeous! The finish is deep and rich - much more so than the illustration on the webpage.I tuned it up, lowered the action and fell in love all over again. I do a lot of finger picking. This instrument just melted into my average size hands. Neck is narrow, chords are easy to grab and action is close without fret buzz. It won't chew up the ends of your fingers if you play for 4-5 hours straight. Tone goes from strident to mellow and sustain is incredible.I sent the Epiphone back and forgot about the Viking. The HJ-500 replaced a Fender Coronado II. I owned a Guild D-25 for 30 years which I replaced with a Taylor 314CE. I also own a Gibson classical, a Takamini 12-string and an inexpensive Aria that I use for knock around. The Hag HJ-500 is the best guitar I've ever played. It's beautiful and I love it.For the price this is a steal.PS The pickguard is just a plain piece of wood without the Hagstrom name on it. The illustrations on the webpage show the name. It looks much nicer.

This is one sweet guitar, The more I play it the more I love it. If you feel the need to have to have a famous name on the headstock, that says I spent a lot of money, then this is not for you. But if you are like me and don't have money to burn, but still want the best, then hear it is. My one concern is, I am afraid that after becoming acoustom to the neck of this guitar (EVERYTHING) else that I play will fail in comperison, the neck is just that good. I was woried that the pickups and tuners would not be up to snuf, But like everything else on this guitar it is TOP NOTCH! In the picks the tuners looked kind a goofy, but look real nice in person. And the body of this guitar also looks huge in the picks,(Like somthing that Gramps would play)and the look of the HJ is a little more agersive than the pictures show. It's size is just slightly larger than a Gibson LP. The weight and balance of this guitar is just right. YA, you can play it all night long without having to go to the kiropractor the next day. Everything that you have heard about this guitar is true and then some. The only thing that I have not heard someone say is how bright the sound of this guitar is. Being that this is a guitar of Swedish design I had to have a nutural blond, after playing her I had to name her "Elle Driver"! That ought to say it all. I've tried to find somthing that I didn't like about this guitar, but the only thing that I could come up with is no whammy bar. But I think that I can live without it.
Comments about Hagstrom Jazz Model HJ-500 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:
Ok, first, the good points-this guitar is one of the best sounding jazz guitars I've ever played. the neck is fast(all the things you've hear about this being a fast guitar are true). Sustain is endless -even with flat wound strings.guitars finish(mine's black with gold color hardware)) is astoundingly beautiful. Pickups rival Gibsons, tuners are very well made-keeps in tune very well. The only pitfall(and this was my experience). The pickguard was just a plain falt colored piece of wood, but who cares about a pickguard when you can have a guitar that will keep up with jazz boxes costing 3-4 times as much? Its a great sounding and great looking guitar. Oh, one more thing-it WILL fit into a case made for the Viking(although Hagstrom says no-its tight, but it does fit(I know, I use it!)Peace!
