Fat sound and legendary style: the return of an icon.

When their production stopped in 1983, Hagstrom guitars became instant collectors items. For decades they maintained their market value so well that Hagstrom resumed production in 1996 to rave reviews. The Swede electric guitar is one of their most cherished models, reborn with a mahogany body, carved mahogany top, set mahogany neck, bound Resinator fretboard, and 2 Hagstrom Custom '58 humbuckers for the classic tone that made Hagstrom famous. Hagstrom's patented H-Expander truss rod prevents twisting as well as warpage. 5-ply top binding, pearl block inlays, and chrome hardware provide sharp visuals. Left-handed version.

Portentially great, let down by poor plastic and metal parts

Comments about Hagstrom Swede Left Handed Electric Guitar:

The wooden body, neck and tuners are great. Action is right out of the box. No unwanted noise at the amp when flipping the toggle switches while playing. The pickguard, pickup cover and knobs are black instead of creamy as shown in MF picture. Headstock is identical to the right handed Swede, not flip over like the body for left handed. It is no big deal though.

The guitar appears to be old stock, according to an unofficial Hagstrom serial number decoding guide I found on the web - about 9 month old. The rubber band holding the truss rod wrench to the outside of the wrapping sheet at the headstock had deteriorated to a browny mark and the wrench, still in a little plastic bag, had fallen to the bottom of the box. There was a mark on the body where the wrench is found, which disappeared after a few attempts to clean up. Toggle switches have a high crown shape, which I found odd and not elegant as the water drop shape in the picture. There's some play at the neck pickup and none at the bridge pickup. Plastic toggle switch and knobs have poor finish and not smooth or elegant. Pickup covers look like being made from deformed molds, with a big excessive chunk not removed. Metal parts under the knobs look very rough, which is visible due to the wide gap. Screws are put at the not so right angle both on the front and the back of the body. Although it doesn't affect how the guitar play, there is serious question about quality control of the copy I received, and it is returned to MF. Maybe I am just unlucky and hope that this is just an isolated case.

Comments about Hagstrom Swede Left Handed Electric Guitar:

Well made, good balance. Heavy, though less than a Paul.Kinda hoped they were made in Swe., but superb craftsmanship Classy look.Pickguard is a ugly hunk of ABS plastic.Clear or smoked pelxi would be better. Tone toggle seems useless so far, should be smaller and lower.Tuners are ok, not impressive. Bridge was right-handed and re-intoned to do reverse.String saddles are obviously cut wrong(low E sits on groove for high E)Can't get rid of fret buzz w\o new bridge.Had a Hag.in 1969, small frets were a problem. Better now, still need to use jumbos on this Paul-ish axe. I got a great deal on this, would recommend it but not at cat.level, (list of course is a joke).

      Can yield you a gem

      By southpaw219

Comments about Hagstrom Swede Left Handed Electric Guitar:

My Swede is beautiful and sounds like a dream. And she's unique. Be bold, take a chance, buy a guitar that not every aspiring "rock star" already owns. You'll stand out both in looks and in sound. With Hagstrom's stellar warranty, you won't regret your purchase, even if you need to exchange -- for a better replacement -- the guitar you received. The end result is worth it. These are guitars that will last a lifetime and make a great bequest to whomever you'd give it when your playing days have ended.
It's got individual controls for the neck and bridge pickups, with one or the other volume control affecting both pickups if both are selected. Essentially, Les Paul wiring. The tone-filter toggle is a nice touch, but the high-pass filter is far more useful than the low-pass, because the low-pass sound is far too muddy to be useful.
If you get a well-constructed Swede, you have a guitar to rival ANY guitar made by ANY manufacturer, and your Swede might even surpass the guitars being sold by some of the big-name brands. However, buyer beware; Hagstrom's QC leaves a lot to be desired. You could wind up with a real lemon if you buy sight-unseen. However, I wouldn't let that dissuade you. Hagstrom's warranty is great. If you wind up with a sub-par guitar, they will replace it and odds are that the replacement with be a stellar guitar that you will be proud to own, and will be a joy to play.
In my opinion, there is no better value guitar available. Not one. Hagstroms are par exellence. For the price you pay, if you get a guitar without issues (see above), you will get a guitar that either matches or exceeds a Les Paul. Also, the Hagstrom is better weighted and more comfortable to play, in my opinion. The stock pickups are amazing and don't require any after-market replacements. Despite the hassle I went through with a warranty replacement, I have not one regret from buying my Swede.

      Now I Want More Hags

      By Gross_Pogo

      from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about Hagstrom Swede Left Handed Electric Guitar:

I've owned a wide selection of guitars in the last eight years, but this is the one that has blown me away the most. This is a tremendous value for your dollar. The guitar itself is drop dead gorgeous. I have it in gold top and everybody has something good to say about it. The body, neck, headstock -- every inch was manufactured with the utmost care. I marked quality down a notch because it arrived with a toggle switch fallen into the body...tightened the assembly and she was beautiful.Looks mean nothing if it sounds like a dud, though. Fortunately, the Swede sounds even better than it looks. Of course it has the usual humbucker toggle switch with two volume and two tone controls. What really sets it apart, however, is the "Tone Filter" toggle. Flip it one way and you get a sort of lo pass filter -- Really great for jazz when coupled with the neck pickup. Flip it the other and you get something like a hi pass filter -- really great for dialing up a ska sound. This option adds even more versatility to the Swede, although you will often have to answer the question, "What does that one do?"The Swede is a stunning guitar with tones suitable for practically any genre of music. As much as I love Gibson, faced with the decision between one of these and a LP Standard, I would choose the Hagstrom every time. Or you can just choose both!(I'd like to note that I had a new nut made for this guitar in order for it to be strung like a righty. If you're a lefty player and taught yourself to play like I did, chances are you learned on a righty guitar; "upside down." I'm noting this because my luthier was still able to get perfect intonation from my guitar after the inversion. So if you're looking for an LP style guitar that won't get a screwy intonation after this type of mod, this is it)

Comments about Hagstrom Swede Left Handed Electric Guitar:

i own several gibson guitars and and understand the craftsmanships and heart that goes into a gibson guitar and hagstrom does a great job at makeing a simular quality guitar for a much lower price. This guitar has a super fast neck and a gretsch like sound because of its tone filter switch alike with gretch guitars. Highly recommended!
