Ibanez

The pinnacle of shred science.

This Ibanez S5470 Prestige is the electric guitar other metal-minded guitars will be judged against. 24 frets of wicked fast neck, ZR2 bridge with ZPS3 spring system, and an advanced tonal versatility give the S5470 guitar an edge over most guitars in its class.

Heavy mahogany tone without the heavy mahogany weight. Thin around the edges for comfort, fat around the pickups and bridge for tone. S Prestige model features HGD1 Hot Grinder neck humbucker pickup, ST1 Short Tracer mid single-coil pickup, and HGD2 Hot Grinder bridge humbucker pickup. The Hot Grinder humbuckers are hot, yet sharp enough to hear the pick bite the strings. The Short Tracer has a strong magnet that provides full output in low profile setting.

5-piece neck with Prestige finishing for increased playing comfort, Gotoh precision tuning machines and deluxe Prestige case. Made in Japan by Ibanez's best craftsmen.

The ZR2 (Zero Resistance) bridge with the ZPS3 spring system returns you to "zero" — center point — after each use of the tremolo arm, even in the case of string breakage! No more wondering if you're back in tune or worse, knowing you're not! One more way to provide more dive-bombing freedom with less hassle.

Best guitar!!!

Features:

Tuning stability of the ZR2 trem is great even after heavy use. Too early to comment on the ZPS. The pickups have very little or no noise and sound great in all combinations. It is extremely confortable and playable. The case is very sturdy and nice. It is molded specifically for this guitar so that it fits snugly in it without floating around. Nice tool kit included. The saddle screws are offset so that they can be accessed without loosening the strings during intonation. Intonation tool is screwd to the bridge for quick access.

Quality:

The finish was flawless. Knob adjustment feel is great. Dispite the thin body the guitar feels very solid and well built. The pickup selection switch is slightly noisy thru the amp while moving. Factory set action is just right for my taste but there is slight lower string buzzing at the upper frets which could require neck adjustment. Intonation was perfectly set at the factory.

Value:

Great value.

Overall:

Pretty close to perfect. Too pretty to handle the same way I handle my other guitars.

Team J Craft logo

Features:

People are freaking out on internet because their headstock isn't stamped "Team J Craft"  no worries, I spoke with manager at Pennsylvania Ibanez plant and wrote to the Japan HQ .  Both were more than happy to speak and one email response..

As long as it stamped with "Made in Japan" and has a serial # (that you can look up online @ Ibanez it is the real deal.  The Team J Craft logo was partially phased out in 2010, instead using the that space for the KTS Titanium/CE logo .

I ordered mine driectly from the Pennsylvania plant and it doesn't have logo , just a heads up to the authenticity. Don't freak

Value:

Bang for the buck, I aret a 9 on a 10 scale

Overall:

ONLY thing I would change would be the middle single PU, maybe a Blue Velvet Dimarzio.

Stock one doesn't have much punch/output

I bought the Red Viking version of this guitar in early 2011 and had Dimarzio EVOs installed.  When it arrived and I opened the case it was like Christmas morning.  It looks so awesome in person, just a beautiful instrument.  The finish is perfect, the neck looks impeccable, just looking at it is satisfying.  I'd never owned an S guitar before but I had played on the mid range models at guitar shops.  If you're unfamiliar with them you should know they are SUPER light and really thin.  I had been playing my old Les Paul Custom primarily before I got this guitar - when I strapped on the S5470 I could barely even feel it. The sustain and tone is no where near as good as my Les Paul, but I was expecting that based on how small the actual guitar is - not bad, just no great.  The ZR2 bridge is pretty nice.  It sets up super easy with the thumb wheel in the back and the intonation tool is pretty clever.  The Zero Point System was kind of a gimmick.  I removed it as it made the trem too stiff - didn't matter though the thing still wouldn't go out of tune.  Can't comment on stock pickups but with the EVOs it really screamed - probably more than I wanted!  The neck is awesome if you like thin, flat, and wide necks.  I ended up selling mine because I realized I prefer fatter, more narrow necks.  Personal preference.  If they made this guitar with a more Strat like neck and 22 frets I'd buy it in a hearbeat.  Definitely recommend.

Great Rockin' Guitar, Only minor issues

I was in the market for a shred axe that had: 1) 24 frets 2) locking trem 3) Great playability. I saw Doug Doppler personally endorse this guitar at a local clinic (he no long endorses 24 frets in general) but it was enough to sell me on the guitar. Once it arrived, I loved it - that was 2 years ago.  The Pros: 1) neck - hey, it's an Ibanez neck - it's thin and smooth 2) light body (well, when you've played Les Pauls, a bag of bricks feels lighter...) 3) Great trem - one thing I didn't realize I liked was the low profile of the ZR2 - another Ibanez I have has a licensed FR and the fine tuners hit the underside of my forearm - not this pup. And it stays in tune.  I'm wary of FR's now.. 4) Love the bridge and neck pups 5) Easy access to high range - this is a must.  Again, my Les Paul has 22 frets but darn if I can reach them and make them sing.  Not a problem on this fella. Cons: 1) Not a big fan of the middle pickup.  The guy at the local shop argued with me that it's single coil and not going to be as hot as the other two - ok, that's fine, but my strat is all single coil and not nearly as noisy as this one.  Plus the volume change is undeniable - even when in 2nd and 4th position switches which can affect live performances.  I was told one alternative would be to install a double single coil to get rid of the hum issue. 2) Not real versatile but that's kinda like saying the Ferrari doesn't have room for the groceries.  It is a hard rock axe - not really that good for lighter fair or jazz.  So it's not perfect - what guitar is? - but I give it an A- and it is my main axe now.
