La Patrie

An incredibly comfortable and easy-playing 3/4-size classical.

The Motif Classical Guitar from La Patrie has a solid cedar top, laminated mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard, rosewood bridge with compensated saddle, gold "lyra" style tuners with pearloid buttons, and a semi-gloss satin finish.

The Motif takes its compact dimensions from turn-of-the-century parlor guitars. This is an excellent instrument for anyone more comfortable with a smaller instrument. The compact body of the Motif suggests a 3/4 size instrument but this is a full-scale guitar. Most children from about six years old can handle the Motif quite comfortably and because they are practicing on a full-scale switching to a full size classical guitar can be accomplished with very little adjustment. There is more to the compact body style of the Motif than comfort, this is a serious guitar with many of the same features that professional guitarists look for in the best handcrafted instruments. The solid cedar top and genuine lacquer finish ensure that this guitar will not only sound great when you first receive it but will actually become better sounding with playing over time. The body is made from a three-way lamination of hardwood that includes a poplar center sandwiched between two layers of mahogany. The Motif neck is made from Honduras mahogany with an Indian rosewood fingerboard. Case sold separately.
800 Year Old Trees
All LaPatrie guitars feature solid cedar tops. The wood used in these tops can be found only in cedar trees that have an average age of about 800 years. The tight, straight grain in this wood makes it strong in the direction of the string tension while at the same time flexible across the grain lines. It is this combination of rigidity and flexibility that give the top its resonance. The vibration of the guitar top is the most crucial element of the sound.

Lacquer Finish
LaPatrie guitars are finished with a special lacquer formula. This finish is light enough to allow the wood to breath and vibrate freely. The tops resonating capacity actually improves as the guitar is played over an extended period of time. This gradual improvement in the response of the top is often referred to as "aging". Poly finishes inhibit top vibration and are therefore never used on LaPatrie guitars. Many other guitars use a thick plastic finish that smothers top vibration and prevents the benefits of aging.

Classics that are comfortable to play
Classical guitars of the past have typically been made with thick neck dimensions, while this promoted a certain amount of neck stability, it often made certain playing aspects difficult to execute. It is for this reason that special attention was directed to the neck design of the LaPatrie guitars. Neck width and string spacing conform to classical standards, but a new truss rod system allows the profile of the neck to be reduced producing a neck of extraordinary comfort, while increasing stability. The LaPatrie necks are carved from Honduras mahogany. All LaPatrie models feature a rosewood fingerboard and bridge.

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

After playing all the classical guitars in Guitar Center and the other local stores I was a little frustrated. Nothing sounded right, nothing fingered right and the tone variation was usually heavily weighted toward bass or treble. Keep in mind I was looking at low to medium priced instruments. I started reading online reviews and forums and noticed the comments from owners of this guitar and it sounded good. I decided I couldn't dislike it anymore than anything else I had played and even though I usually only buy instruments that I can play first, I decided to chance it. Boy am I glad I did. I like this guitar much more than the Cordoba c3 and c5's that I played. Very even tone from bass to treble ( the most blatant issue with the others). This guitar is fun to play. It makes me want to pick it up. Love this guitar! A real gem in this price range. Oh, and the small body definately does not lack bass (The body is smaller in diameter but deeper than the full size models). This thing sounds great to my ears and was a real surprise after playing the competition.

Great beginner and travel classical guitar - La Patrie Motif

    By Douglas Truxillo

    from Louisiana

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

Very pleased. First of all, the ordering and delivery from Musician's Friend was easy and fast. The guitar arrived when expected and in perfect condition.

Next, this guitar has full sound and perfect intonation up the neck. I was surprised by the quality and sound. It is deep [4.25"] so it does not fit into a normal classical case. I ordered the Godin TRIC Parlor case and it fits perfectly.

The playability and action is very good, but I may change the strings shortly to something else. These are normal tension strings but have a good sound.
Cedar top and full size fretboard makes this a great bargin.
Excellent fit and finish. Canadian made with a quality feel and sound.
$350 Excellent value. Beats all other beginner classical guitars out there. I wanted something to start on and if I move up, I can sell to a student or use as a travel guitar. This wonderful sounding guitar fit that niche perfectly. I can recommend the La Patrie Motif to anyone looking for a entry level classical guitar or a nice travel classical guitar.

Great beginner and travel classical guitar

    By Douglas Truxillo

    from Louisiana

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

It has a significant and quality sound and a full size fretboard. Fit and finish were excellent.
First The shipping was first rate and the guitar arrived quickly and in great condition.

Next I was looking for a starter classical guitar to expand my playing. I did not want to spend more than $400 and I wanted something that I might sell on to a student if I move up. The La Patrie Motif guitar fit the bill.

Also, I wanted a good sounding and well made guitar. This one is. It has a significant and quality sound and a full size fretboard. Fit and finish were excellent.

I would definitely consider other La Patrie models in the future.

    La Patrie Motif

    By Big Papa-VWJQS

    from Seattle, WA

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

The Motif is a parlor sized nylon string (classical) guitar. The playability is wonderful and the intonation spot on. The tone and volume this little gem produces belies it's small size. You can feel the top, back and neck vibrate as you play and the wonderful resonance it produces makes the whole guitar seem alive in your hands.

Amazing bass response from such a small body, yet the sound is very even across the entire tonal spectrum. The Motif takes well to altered tunings also. DADGAD sings and rings and playing blues in Open D or double dropped D is quite a thrill.

I was looking for a steel string parlor when this one popped up. Took a chance on it and I am so very glad I did. This one is going to be with me for a long time.

If you are in the marlet for a small bodied guitar, do yourself a favor and check one of these out. Once you play it, you;ll want it. They are that good.
Features are very basic, but this guitar is elegant in it's simplicity.
Quality is top notch. I'm a fan of the Godin family of guitars. I've owned a few Seagulls, an A&L, this little beauty, the Motif and nearly bought a Simon and Patrick. I believe they are among the best bang for your buck out there today.
As above.....excellent quality and tremendous value.....even at full price.

    my favorite guitar

    By David-USvp_

    from Boulder, CO

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

I tried every nylon string guitar I could get my hands on. This little guitar had the best tone, hands down. Great bass tones, good mid, crisp highlights, easy to play, bright harmonics. It even seemed louder than it's bigger bodied cousin, the Etude, which seemed to have a flatter, less dynamic sound to it.In short, the only reason to buy a guitar is tone, and now I don't play anything but this one. I wish I could find a steel string that I liked as much as I like this guitar.

    Excellent little guitar

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

Bought this second hand about 3 years ago, and it is an excellent sounding and playing parlor sized guitar. It gets an amazing good amount of bass, and has a very crisp sound. I added an under-saddle pickup because this has turned into my main guitar. It just feels and sounds great.I play using a strap all the time, but if you don't, you'll need a footrest that is slightly higher than when using a normal sized guitar.I bought an aftermarket "Gator" case for this and am currently looking for a flight case made for 3/4 sized guitars. This is a hard size to find cases for.Downside to a cedar top is that it scratches easily from your fingernails. They are simply war sounds.

    Good buy

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

This guitar is a must for anyone taking interest in classical guitar. I tried several different guitars/brands and for the price range you can't beat it. Right out of the box it plays great with a real low action for a classical and nice feel.Only negatives I can give are, if it's not tuned to standard E, you lose tone. But most pieces are wrote in standard E so that shouldn't be an issue. You also may want to invest in a better set of tuners. Most of the guitars in this price range I tried had "cheap" tuners so it's almost unavoidable.

    Awesome classical

    By Dunesjeesh

    from Ellendale, ND

Comments about La Patrie Motif Classical Guitar:

I prefer classical guitar to any other form and this guitar well accomadates my need. The sound on this guitar is very rich carrying well rounded lows and well defined highs. This is also an easy to play guitar. The width of the neck and the thickness makes it easy to play. The action is a little high but since your able to adjust and it is a classical this isn't really a problem.
