OVERVIEW

This Martin Custom D Classic Acoustic Guitar is the real deal and a real steal. Crafted with a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides, the mahogany Custom D guitar also has a tortoise binding, modified low-oval mahogany neck with a mortise-and-tenon joint and adjustable truss rod. Solid Indian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and inlaid single-ring rosette complete this Martin guitar. The mahogany body on the Custom D guitar is much lighter in weight than rosewood, koa, or maple and yields a surprisingly strong, loud sound with an emphasis on clear, bright, airy trebles. Quantities of this custom Martin acoustic guitar are limited.

Most affordable spruce-top solid wood Martin ever, and only available here.

What's the Catch? I called Musicians Friend prior to ordering to make sure these guitars weren't 2nds, blems, or return items. The gentleman said no, these are brand new in the box. I had a D-15 M that I traded along with some other instruments about 7 years ago for a drum kit, and have not gotten over how much I miss that guitar. I have a family so I haven't spent a dime on myself for quite some time, so I decided to take advantage of the favorable financing available. I don't have nine hundy laying around, but I do have fifty bones a month to spare. This guitar arrived in a new box that didn't have several other labels with crossed addresses so that was positive sign number one. The hardshell case was immaculate and certainly lives up to the Martin tag on the side. No dings or blems on it anywhere. Guitar fits snugly with no slop or movement. Now for the good stuff. When you open the case the aroma of the Mahogany is almost intoxicating, much like the sound of slot machines when you walk into a casino, same effect. I inspected the guitar very closely, and it is perfect in every way. Martin hit a home run with this one. Brand new, not a noticeable fingerprint on it anywhere. Setup was perfect right out of the box, arrived in tune, very easy to play, and the Martin sound is fantastic. I don't know how they do it but Martin guitars have a definite "soul" waiting to be released every time you pluck it or strum it. Its wonderful that in order to make this product affordable, Martin focused less on appointments without compromising tonal quality in the least. I totally agree with others who have commented about the relative light weight of the instrument and the impressive volume you can produce with it. I could go on forever but I'll finish by saying this thing is a natural born killer. By the way there is no catch. I'm so happy I pulled the trigger and did it.

I returned it. pending the arrival of the Martin D-1GT, which has a stratabond neck, but the rest is
all solid wood. (this model is not in stock at this time).I guess I will finally accept alternative
materials; been quite the all-solid wood snob up to now.

This was a fluke, MF handled it just fine and I still love Martins more than any other brand. I
suspect the shipper let this one get exposed to temperature extremes and it warped, as any
acoustic would.
Basic, no frills model. But that's fine. And it DOES come with a very nice case. (the listing doesn't
mention that). Appears to be more AA wood than AAA.
There was a hump in the fretboard right at the joint to the body, seemingly due to warpage of
the top, possibly due to temperature extremes on the shippers part. Truss rod will not fix that,
and I doubt Martin shipped it that way. Playing it in the lower frets showed it to be a cannon; just
beautiful, full bass with plenty of mids as well, no muddiness anywhere. I have a mahogany 000-15
that now sounds sort of.........muted to me. Love that dread boom!
If you can get one with no issues: it's a great buy.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this from a return, and what a steal. The guy who sent it back has no idea what he is missing! I can say, and so does everyone who hears it, that this is the best sounding guitar I have ever heard. The tone and sustain is amazing and it is such a joy to play. I have 3 Carvin"s, 2 Washburn"s, 2 Breelove's- Oregan, Atlas Revival, Taylor 615, 2 Blueridge- BR 160 & 180, 2 Alvarez's, 2 Zager's- 20 & 80, 1939 L-50!! This is the best of them all!

          great guitar, great value.

from what i read this guitar is outstanding. had it about a month and have to say i totally agree. did my research to find out what is different and more expensive about a d-18, will just mention the most important ones i know of. keep in mind i have played nice guitars before, never played a d-18.

the dovetail neck on the d-18 is more expensive to make, probably sounds a little better. the bracing is different. the custom d has more bass and less overtones than the d-18. i actually really like the bass of the custom d for most stuff i play. and subtle overtones is not necessarily a bad thing. just as rosewood guitars sound really beautiful, the sound can get muddy with overtones for some styles.

all solid wood martin at 900. for me it was a home run.

          hope that helps

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Have been hacking a sound out a guitar for 50 years or so, and have played many different "axes" in my time! I never owned a Martin, though I have been impressed by them through the years, and played a borrowed D 35 for a few years and loved its playability, and above all, sound! I finally "sprung" a very small slice of "bread" for the custom D and couldn't be more thrilled with what is a very capable instrument! Just read the positive out pouring of the believers here, and buy one before Martin decides they aren't charging enough for an American icon!!! A true example of why you should buy American!

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

When I began looking for a higher quality acoustic to replace my less expensive guitars, I scoured all of the usual suspects websites, and spent months playing different guitars from Taylor, Martin, Gibson, and others, at local guitar shops. I had not tried this particular model, but I was a fan of it's simple design and satin finished neck. I ordered the guitar, and it arrived well packaged two days later. When I opened the well constructed case that comes with this guitar, I was immediately struck by the smell of the mahogany that other reviewers had spoken about. I found the guitar to be very light, but solidly built, with excellent quality throughout. The tuners have a smooth, solid feel, and the guitar stays in tune much better than my less expensive guitars. This may be a no-frills guitar, but the sound it produces is stunning. The warmth of the mahogany with the crisp projection of the spruce complement each other well, (each note rings out clearly and evenly). Everyone that hears this guitar loves it's voice. The asking price for this solid wood guitar is reasonable, and makes it a good value. I think there are a lot of great guitars out there, but if you really want an American made solid wood guitar, and you don't want to spend two grand or more, there really is no need to. This is your guitar.

Not knowing the craftsmanship Martin brings to the product portfolio, I assumed the worst since I did not spend a fortune on it. My earlier comments were based on aesthetics, not sound quality. And that is where this model steps up its game by bringing top notch sound and playability to Martin customers.

If I were just starting out playing, or an accomplished musician I would be proud to use this guitar. Even the case is much better than I expected and is designed with musicians in mind allowing to stand upright on its on.

Hey, you can't tell a book by its cover after all.

Recently tried this product out at a local store and felt it was a good fit for the money. Ordered from my buddies @ MF and rec a really shabby looking unit the first time. Called CS and they were great about sending out another Martin. It looks better overall, but I'm concerned not much effort was put into these guitars. I have a Seagull and it has far superior looks and much more solid body construction.
I'm planning on keeping it and hoping I'm just being too hard initially, but maybe u just get what u pay for. But I don't consider a guitar in this price range cheap. We shall see if the true Martin will come through and surprise me.
