OVERVIEW

A phenomenal price for a solid-rosewood 15-Series guitar!

The Martin Custom D Acoustic Guitar comes with simple appointments and a modest price that make it reminiscent of the 15 Series Martin guitars of the 1940s. The Custom D guitar eschews vintage all-mahogany construction for a select solid Sitka spruce top with lighter bracing for big projection. The guitar's solid East Indian rosewood back and sides produce ringing punch and sustain. The modified low-oval mahogany neck is set with a mortise-and-tenon neck joint and has an adjustable truss rod and solid Indian rosewood fingerboard. The body and neck are bound in tortoise-colored binding. The Custom D guitar also has a rosewood bridge, dot fretboard inlays, rosewood headstock overlay, and an inlaid single-ring rosette. Quantities of this custom Martin acoustic guitar are limited.

My 45 days are up, and I've decided I'm enthusiatically keeping this guitar. At first I wasn't sure. It played very nicely out of the box and sounded good, but a few little things kept me on the fence. I've been playing almost 30 years, and this is my first Martin I've owned. I have several high-end Ovations, and cut my teeth on a lawsuit-era solid top Takamine. The bridge was dry as a bone when the guitar showed up. Almost like a raw piece of wood. It also seems like they missed finish sanding on one of the wings. I was also a little disappointed in the quality of the top ... the spruce was not nearly as nice as on my Ovations. The top has a fair amount of "stripes" and there are two spots of natural disfiguration like a small white knot about 1/4" in diameter, just on either side of the bridge. I suppose I was expecting a really tight, consistent grain and coloration. My Ovations have AAA tops. However, I've gotten over all that. This is easily one of the best playing and sounding guitars I've ever had my hands on, and they've been on a lot over the years. This guitar booms and is really at home in the "money" frets or with "cowboy chords". Man, does this one really sing. It's opening up really well and I imagine it's going to keep getting better. It's getting more play time than all of my other (15) guitars combined. It records with the same warmth and tone you hear when playing. All I can say is WOW!I've come to really appreciate the top. I think it will age well and all the grain in the top will pop to the surface. The bookmatch is nearly invisible, and both sides are mirror images of the other. The imperfections are starting to look like dimples on the Mona Lisa smile of the bridge, which is now beautiful since I've been conditioning the rosewood. The solid back and sides are nothing short of amazing, and the rest of the fit finish and construction is impeccable. Nice touches with the rosewood headstock (and raised gold logo) and small abalone fret dots.I was all set to spend thousands more for a higher end Martin. Took a flyer on this to play it and have it while I hunted and played -28s,-35s and -40s. To be honest, this one felt, sounded, and played better than any of the others ... no lie. It may be plain ... but appointments don't tell the whole story. This is an incredible buy ... at twice the price. An extra bonus touch is the engraved wood plaque mounted inside up against the neck. It's got the Martin company logo and the patent #s on top and bottom, but in the middle it has the word Custom and below that the serial number. No model number, just "Custom". This one sure qualifies for the label.

I just recived my d15 custom and I am absolutly istatic with It. rght out of the box it was ready to play. It is a plane Jane untill the first time you strum It. Then you know It is a true Martin. I can find no fault with this insterment and would recomend it to anyone looking for a quality all wood, all american guitar. The only negitive I can come up with has to do with the case. The quality of the case is fine except min was damaged. The vinel covering apears to have been cut with a box knife. A slit about 6 inches long. A litel super glue repaired it to where the damage is nearly invisable. I expect a little more quality control from a company with the reputation like martin. The damaged case not withstanding I will still recomand the perchas of this insterment. after all the case dose not make music.

Wonderful guitar

By Jason-O-vO1

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for over 15 years. While recently shopping for a new acoustic I played the D-28 Marquis, an HD-28, a D-35, a Breedlove, a Hummingbird... the list goes on. For the money this guitar has the sound and feel of any other Martin. The wood is wonderful. The construction is also very good. They just fit the guitar out with the cheapest tuners, rosette, lack of bindings and paint, etc that they can get away with. Its a real solid wood Martin -- its just got no extras. The guitar looks mostly great -- but has a blemish or two. It arrived set up amazingly right for me. Action is low, neck is super fast.I love it. I keep thinking I should want some super expensive guitar -- but this one does everything I can ask.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I bought one of these, & I also and very lucky enough to have the Custom D in Mahogany as well...These are both incredibly nice, beautiful, well made...Both have booming projection, evenly balanced tone, "piano clean" like"sound..The Rosewood model is a little louder w/ more punch, but the Mahogany has more of a 'warmer" sound..You should buy 'em BOTH to have the best of both worlds!

Outstanding Guitar

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Don't miss out on this model at this price. I bought a D12X1 last Christmas and was blown away with it for my first Martin. I wasn't sure about the HPL sides and back. I knew then that if Martin could make a composite sound that good their real wood had to be great. This solid rosewood guitar sounds awesome. The projection is out of this world and the tone is all Martin. A cousin that plays in a Bluegrass band let me borrow her HD-28 for a couple weeks and needless to say this model has very much that same punch that hers has. Not nearly as fancy looking as hers, but compared to the price of a new HD-28 this guitar is a steal for the sound and craftsmanship you get. Oh yes,one last thing,It does smell great when you open the case.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I purchased a Custom D Rosewood Martin guitar a couple of months ago and am still blown away by its sound and brightness. I had K & K Sound Pure Western Mini pickups installed. I also installed a tusq saddle. I am happier with this guitar than I was with my Taylor 714ce. I think the tone and the electronics are superior and I loved my Taylor.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

This is a very nice solid body wood guitar. However you will find that it needs some major adjusting from a good luthier as it is not playable as is. The neck will need to be adjusted. The action will need lowered as it is very high. The strap pin is supplied but not installed. the strap pin hole is to small so will need drilled out. the string pins are not flush so the holes will need to be resized. there is no front strap pin so if you want one it will need installed. the bridge plate and finger board is not treated at factory so will need to be oiled.after all is done it doe sound good and plays very nice.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I've only been playin for just about 2 years now and it was time to move up from a hundred dollar guitar that I had started with ( can't mention name). I chose Martin for their reputation and quality.I purchased the Custom D Classic Rosewood model and I am not disapointed. No bling or eye candy on this guitar but the sound is warm and clean. Mine played great right out of the box no adjustments needed! Very good quality guitar for the price!

Simply Beautiful

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Where to start...the sound.Pure Martin, that is to say Beautiful. The tone is rich and pure, nice deep bass and very clear mids and highs. Great projection. The looks ..my title says it all. Simply Beautiful. This is a basic no frills acoustic guitar. The finish is satin...not glossy. I prefer it. It is simply appointed with a single rosette around the sound hole and dot fret markers, and a simple tortoise binding around the top. The guitars simple design gives it an understated elegance. The smell, well thats a bonus, intoxicating. The workmanship is perfect, very high quality. No defects or flaws. The action was a tad high for me as I have short fingers. I lowered the action. For most players it would be fine right out of the box.. Every acoustic I ever owned I had to have the action lowered. I wanted American Made and had $1000 to spend. With the nice TKL hardshell case that comes with it this is a great value on an American Made guitar. Conclusion, if your into the sound and a quality build and not flashy looks, Buy it.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I've been looking for a guitar to get the tone in my head for a many years. I didn't think I could afford a guitar with that kind of tone, until now. I checked out a ton of acoustics and after not finding what I wanted I just passed this one on the wall. I strummed the strings once and literally stepped back. The angels sang! The tone I've been looking for is like Jimmy Page's tone on Zep III, tunes like That's the Way and Tangerine just do it for me. I like the Taylors but it's like someone EQ'd them with a mid scoop - all crystaline highs and bass but no midrange bloom. I didnt even like Martins until I heard this one and I put it on layaway as soon as I was done checking it out. This thing is a Cannon! Perfect for bluegrass, blues, and celtic/country folk. Tried D'Addario strings on it and no bueno, so I'm sticking with the Martin SP's it came with unless I find something better.

      My first Martin...WOW!!!

      By mauiblue

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Well I got my Martin D-15 Custom a couple days ago. I almost got a Washburn but decided to go with Martin because of their reputation and good reviews here and on the Internet. This my first guitar I've own since my Yamaha acoustic (over twenty years ago). I was a bit disappointed that the finish did have a very tiny piece of crud that was stuck in the satin finish which you can feel when you run your hand over the finish on the front of the guitar (that's why I gave it 4 stars) but overall the guitar's workmanship is good. Valuewise, this is a good starter Martin with great sound and it is a limited edition custom made exclusively for MF so that may make it a collectable in the years to come.
