    A phenomenal price for a solid-rosewood 15-Series guitar!

The Martin Custom D Acoustic Guitar comes with simple appointments and a modest price that make it reminiscent of the 15 Series Martin guitars of the 1940s. The Custom D guitar eschews vintage all-mahogany construction for a select solid Sitka spruce top with lighter bracing for big projection. The guitar's solid East Indian rosewood back and sides produce ringing punch and sustain. The modified low-oval mahogany neck is set with a mortise-and-tenon neck joint and has an adjustable truss rod and solid Indian rosewood fingerboard. The body and neck are bound in tortoise-colored binding. The Custom D guitar also has a rosewood bridge, dot fretboard inlays, rosewood headstock overlay, and an inlaid single-ring rosette. Quantities of this custom Martin acoustic guitar are limited.

My 45 days are up, and I've decided I'm enthusiatically keeping this guitar. At first I wasn't sure. It played very nicely out of the box and sounded good, but a few little things kept me on the fence. I've been playing almost 30 years, and this is my first Martin I've owned. I have several high-end Ovations, and cut my teeth on a lawsuit-era solid top Takamine. The bridge was dry as a bone when the guitar showed up. Almost like a raw piece of wood. It also seems like they missed finish sanding on one of the wings. I was also a little disappointed in the quality of the top ... the spruce was not nearly as nice as on my Ovations. The top has a fair amount of "stripes" and there are two spots of natural disfiguration like a small white knot about 1/4" in diameter, just on either side of the bridge. I suppose I was expecting a really tight, consistent grain and coloration. My Ovations have AAA tops. However, I've gotten over all that. This is easily one of the best playing and sounding guitars I've ever had my hands on, and they've been on a lot over the years. This guitar booms and is really at home in the "money" frets or with "cowboy chords". Man, does this one really sing. It's opening up really well and I imagine it's going to keep getting better. It's getting more play time than all of my other (15) guitars combined. It records with the same warmth and tone you hear when playing. All I can say is WOW!I've come to really appreciate the top. I think it will age well and all the grain in the top will pop to the surface. The bookmatch is nearly invisible, and both sides are mirror images of the other. The imperfections are starting to look like dimples on the Mona Lisa smile of the bridge, which is now beautiful since I've been conditioning the rosewood. The solid back and sides are nothing short of amazing, and the rest of the fit finish and construction is impeccable. Nice touches with the rosewood headstock (and raised gold logo) and small abalone fret dots.I was all set to spend thousands more for a higher end Martin. Took a flyer on this to play it and have it while I hunted and played -28s,-35s and -40s. To be honest, this one felt, sounded, and played better than any of the others ... no lie. It may be plain ... but appointments don't tell the whole story. This is an incredible buy ... at twice the price. An extra bonus touch is the engraved wood plaque mounted inside up against the neck. It's got the Martin company logo and the patent #s on top and bottom, but in the middle it has the word Custom and below that the serial number. No model number, just "Custom". This one sure qualifies for the label.

I just recived my d15 custom and I am absolutly istatic with It. rght out of the box it was ready to play. It is a plane Jane untill the first time you strum It. Then you know It is a true Martin. I can find no fault with this insterment and would recomend it to anyone looking for a quality all wood, all american guitar. The only negitive I can come up with has to do with the case. The quality of the case is fine except min was damaged. The vinel covering apears to have been cut with a box knife. A slit about 6 inches long. A litel super glue repaired it to where the damage is nearly invisable. I expect a little more quality control from a company with the reputation like martin. The damaged case not withstanding I will still recomand the perchas of this insterment. after all the case dose not make music.

    Just Fab!

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

    Great action and smooth playability.
I bought this guitar to compliment my Gibson 1935 re-issue Jumbo. This guitar moved into a new dimension all it's own. String it with special Martin strings that are part nylon and the sound becomes soft and perfect to play many classical music bits like " Shape of My Heart" and the "Cantata" from the theme from the Dear Hunter Movie. It stays in tune exceptionally well and also travels well. It stands out as one of my favorites.Get it now before it goes away.

Extrodinary Value for a nice Martin.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I've only been playin for just about 2 years now and it was time to move up from a hundred dollar guitar that I had started with ( can't mention name). I chose Martin for their reputation and quality.I purchased the Custom D Classic Rosewood model and I am not disapointed. No bling or eye candy on this guitar but the sound is warm and clean. Mine played great right out of the box no adjustments needed! Very good quality guitar for the price!

    You can do better

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Not sure why all the 5 star comments. I wanted to love this Martin, but it arrived with the top wood separating from the sides. MF was great and took it back no problem. Out of box the action and setup are rather poor. The sound is nothing to go gaga about; a bit better than an entry level Taylor. Masterbilt rosewoods sound more full. Also, this thing looks as basic as any guitar: no bling. Martin obviously makes amazing guitars, but you need to spend more to get beyond their base level, even if this is a solid wood guitar.

    Outstanding Guitar

    By Jeff-R96qd

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Don't miss out on this model at this price. I bought a D12X1 last Christmas and was blown away with it for my first Martin. I wasn't sure about the HPL sides and back. I knew then that if Martin could make a composite sound that good their real wood had to be great. This solid rosewood guitar sounds awesome. The projection is out of this world and the tone is all Martin. A cousin that plays in a Bluegrass band let me borrow her HD-28 for a couple weeks and needless to say this model has very much that same punch that hers has. Not nearly as fancy looking as hers, but compared to the price of a new HD-28 this guitar is a steal for the sound and craftsmanship you get. Oh yes,one last thing,It does smell great when you open the case.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

This is a very nice solid body wood guitar. However you will find that it needs some major adjusting from a good luthier as it is not playable as is. The neck will need to be adjusted. The action will need lowered as it is very high. The strap pin is supplied but not installed. the strap pin hole is to small so will need drilled out. the string pins are not flush so the holes will need to be resized. there is no front strap pin so if you want one it will need installed. the bridge plate and finger board is not treated at factory so will need to be oiled.after all is done it doe sound good and plays very nice.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Priced at only about one third of a D-28 with all the sound makes this the best buy for an heirloom quality guitar.I live here in the Blue Ridge Mountains where bluegrass is king, and even the old timers can't believe how good it sounds and plays.I highly recommend making this your last and best guitar!

    Sweet Tones

    By J. Daly

    from Louisville, KY

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

My guitar is louder and brighter as D35's and D28's. However D35's are a bit more mellow. The tone is very bright with excellent trebles and mids. The bass is a bit boomy, but overall the tone is excellent. The craftmanship is simple but exceptional quality is evident. The action is a bit stiff at first, but when I upgraded to a bone saddle and pins I lowered the action a little, which makes it completely playable and the bone helps the tone. I have noticed a slight buzz because of fret imperfections, but that can be fixed by refinishing the frets.Overall I'm quite happy!

    Don't pass this beauty by.

    By CapoCat

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar may look like the plain girl who never got asked to dance. That would be a mistake. The appoinments are simple and clean. Has all the punch & sustain expected from a solid rosewood back & sides w/Sitka spruce top. Not flashy, but very playable and sounds like a million $$. I'm going to add a heel-mount front strap peg, bone bridge, saddle and pins. Not that it needs it - but I want to tweak this one for best sound. Comments from other owners are appreciated.

    Martin Custom D...Nice

    By musicman-EnDIp

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned a lot of guitars throughout the years. Martins, Taylors, Blueridge and others. This is my 3rd custom D. 2 rosewood and 1 mohaghany. All three sound great. The last one i bought is the best. Don't be afraid of these guitars. They will hold their own beside the high dollar guitars. Plenty loud and very balanced. And they play great and are easy on the fingers. You wont be disappointsd.

    What a TONE!

    By Rod-m8QRC

    from Ohio/Florida

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Rosewood Acoustic Guitar:

Had mine for 30 days now. At first strum I knew I had to have it. I wanted the HD28 but not ready to pay that kind of cash right now. Then I tried the Custom D-Rosewood. Wow, sounded a lot like the HD28 without all the beautiful binding. A basic no frills, tone machine. Picked softly, the overtones with Elixir Nanowebs is very Taylor like. Strum it harder and you can just feel all the deep horsepower it has. I love it.
