The Martin LTD Edition D42 Special Dreadnought acoustic guitar features premium-grade East Indian rosewood back and sides and the highest grade of Sitka spruce soundboard for balanced, articulate tone. Its scalloped forward-shifted X-bracing allows the top to vibrate freely, producing an open, ringing acoustic voice. The D42 Special showcases intricate pearl inlay work based on a floral design created over two decades ago by former Martin employee Dick Boak. Vintage-inspired appointments include antique white bindings, abalone rosette and inlays and nickel open-gear tuning machines with butterbean knobs.
Scalloped bracing and vintage-inspired appointments
The D42 Special's scalloped forward-shifted X-bracing allows its premium top to vibrate freely, producing the open, ringing tone dreaded Martins are known for. Vintage-inspired appointments like antique white bindings, an abalone rosette and inlays and nickel open-gear tuning machines with butterbean knobs provide classic Martin style with premium components.
Premium tonewoods selected for balanced, articulate tone
The D42 Special's combination of East Indian rosewood and Sitka spruce is a sonic match made in heaven. The rosewood back and sides add warmth, depth and richness. The Sitka spruce soundboard is the highest grade, hand-selected for evenness of grain and resonance. Together, these premium tonewoods produce a balanced acoustic voice with clear highs, robust lows and a full midrange.
Intricate pearl inlay work showcases master craftsmanship
The D42 Special's most striking feature is its intricate pearl inlay work. Former Martin employee Dick Boak created a floral design to be laser engraved, but the material proved unsuitable. Decades later, Boak thought the design would make a stunning inlay. Working with expert inlay artists, Boak's vision came to life. Chris Martin IV approved a prototype and asked Boak to extend the design across the fingerboard and headstock. The result is a masterwork of craftsmanship that turns the D42 Special into a work of art.
