I bought this guitar in Perth, when both it and I were a long way from home. I've played it in Australia, Singapore, Ireland, England, Morocco, and France, as well as home here in the U.S., and passed around a good number of campfires along the way. Just about everyone who plays it loves it. It doesn't sound as good as my 000, and no one should expect it to, but I love to play it.

As for the negative reviews, it may be that they make some lemons, or that some instruments are damaged in shipping. It may also be that some people abuse their instruments. Protruding fret ends and failing glue joints happen when a guitar gets too hot, too cold, or too dry. Treat it like it's alive, and it won't die on you.
It's a travel guitar with the same features as many full-size instruments.

Some people are put off by the non-wood top, but I like it. It's a formica-like material, with spruce bracing. It's a great choice on this instrument. A body this small with a wood top would almost certainly have terrible bass response, unless a great deal of care was taken in carving and thinning the top. A piece of redwood could do the job, but it would be fragile and expensive by comparison. The formica top has a naturally bassy sound that would be too dark on a full size instrument, but which balances well on this little body.
I've been playing mine for six years, with no problems.
I can't think of a better guitar at this price.

This sounded like such a good idea, a small guitar that I could take anywhere, even on a plane. It sounded surprisingly good in the store but the true test is getting to know any guitar over a period of time. Then the weaknesses start to surface. First, the sound rapidly deteriorates as one plays further up the fretboard. Yes, I know it's just a small guitar but the buzzing is excessive. Next, it is not made clear that this guitar is not made from wood. Yes, the bracing is spruce but the back, sides and neck are some synthetic material. The sales guy honestly thought it was wood as I did only to find out later what it really was. Not a big deal because the sound is unusually full for a small guitar. I had someone look at the setup and he agreed, it was set to low and would require some warrenty work to get it right, not something you want to hear after purchasing a new guitar. I tried another model but found the same problem. I ended up returning the guitar, couldn't get used to the fret buzzing. So, I would give it below average ratings for overall quality but above average ratings on sound IF you play below the fifth fret. Above the fifth fret is a below average rating for sound.

This smaller Martin is exactly what I hoped it would be: well-made, with a name brand and a clear sound, in a smaller package suitable for travel or apartment living. I'm very happy with the purchase and have had a positive experience with Musician's Friend (this is my 2nd purchase from them).

Comments about X Series LX Little Martin Acoustic Guitar:

The Martin LX "Little Martin" is an exceptional value. It boasts great tone for its size; has a fast, smooth fingerboard; stays in tune well; and is impervious to quick, dramatic climate changes. I've played for over two decades, and this is the best travel/starter guitar I can think of.

I chose the Martin LX over its LX1 counterpart because the high-pressure laminate top is much, much more durable and consistent than Sitka spruce. I bought this to take with me on camping trips, vacations, and getaways; thus, I was concerned about leaving the LX1 and its spruce top in extreme environment such as hot trunks, cars, etc. No such worries with the HPL construction on the LX.

The tone on this is phenomenal. As expected, the Martin LX sounds like a Martin: bassy and warm; very well suited for strumming and picked leads. Likewise, its Baby Taylor competitor is better suited for exclusive fingerpicking and sounds fairly brittle by comparison, with some intonation and buzz issues. I've experienced no intontation, buzz, or bad fret issues on my LX. In fact, this is the second I've owned because I gave my last one to a good friend who was learning how to play.

Please, buy this instrument without reservation. It bears the hallmarks of the Martin & Co. name (hey, I own a D-35 and one of their ukes, I should know!) and it will satiate anybody's need to rock out on a small acoustic. Impeccable construction; attention to detail; incomparable sound: it is, indeed, a "Little Martin."

Comments about X Series LX Little Martin Acoustic Guitar:

I wasn't sure what HPL was until I received this guitar. The top sides and back are made of a High Pressure Laminate similar to the material on countertops. I can see from reviews that many people are fine with using the material. The sound quality is very good on this guitar, though I have to agree with other reviewers that the E and A buzz a bit. I am sure this could be adjusted. I am very traditional and wanted a traditional guitar so the HPL had a plastic feel to me. Very sad to return it as the gig bag was amazing and the sound quality top notch. I purchased the Baby Taylor which is more in line with what I was expecting. If you are okay with the HPL ... go for it! This just wasn't for me.

Comments about X Series LX Little Martin Acoustic Guitar:

I have been staring at this guitar for a week trying to convince myself to keep it. I just can't do it!
For starters ...I was WOWED when I opened the box at the gig bag. This is the best gig bag I have ever seen. I have always tossed the gig bags that came with my guitars, and had immediately ordered a hard case for this one. My first mistake. The gold Martin stitching and heavy padding was both impressive, sturdy and the perfect home for any guitar. (Can you tell I love the gig bag? And I hate gig bags!)
But then, I opened the stunning bag... the guitar entire body was PLASTIC. Apparently HPL stands for high pressure laminate - you know the stuff your ugly 80's countertops are made out of. The guitar sound is rich- beautiful actually. Yes, the E, A strings buzz as other reviews have stated, but a bit of adjustment would have taken care of that. Tuners are quality, neck beautiful... but the base is very cheap looking from the HPL to the circular decal around the hole. I think the Acoustic/Electric version only has HPL back and sides, but you can't tell me that any true guitar lover would be happy with a plastic guitar. Not this Gal! Unfortunately there were not other Martin Minis that didn't have the HPL so I had to order a Baby Taylor. Luckily, Musician's Friend is awesome and will make the switch for me! Just say "no" to Plastic!

I wanted this for travelling. The man in the shop said it was the best small guitar but I found the sound tinny and the ringing and buzzing on top e string is driving me mad. Taken it back to the shop but they reckon it is fine. Cost a fortune in Australia but not as good as my full size Yamaha that cost a lot less.

The guitar is perfect. I have since bought a new saddle but have not installed it yet. The guitar is incredible.

5 stars isn't a high enough rating. If there was anything I could pick apart is the B and High E string do not sound as nice and full as they do on a full size guitar but that comes with the smaller size.

I have to write about the high pressure laminate body. I really like a natural finish. This guitar feels unnatural. It feels like plastic and I absolutely love it. My perfect guitar would be a full sized version of this guitar.

The overall feeling and size is perfect not to mention the gig bag being top notch.

The body it self feels like it could take a beating. I own guitars that I constantly see new marks and scrapes (I take care of my guitars but I play everyday so they take a beating being out of their cases).
This guitar is going to hold up for a long time.

This guitar is great. It has the quality of other Martins. It is a little heavy for its size, though. I would suggest switching the strings to Lights. The High Pressure Laminate feels the same as my counter tops and seems very sturdy. The sound isn't too loud, but it still sounds great. If you want a Martin without spending a lot of money, this is the guitar for you.

Mine is the Natural top Little Martin LXM I installed a soundboard piezo for fun. I absolutely love this Little Martin for a travel guitar. I have had several travel guitars over the years all really unsatisfactory from the small electric A tuning mini"s, to the ones that you can take apart and all were unsatisfactory. They never felt,or played or sounded like a real guitar. I need a guitar bad after a week without one or I go crazy and ruin my wife's vacation. The little Martin keeps my sanity when the wife takes me off to some exotic place for over a month. They are extremely sturdy constructed and light. They are not real finicky about humidity or climate change. They will even fit in the overhead of those small regional Canadian made Bombardier planes, that have overheads that will only fit a large sized wallet. The best part of the little Martins is they sound good enough to play, and you want to play it.
