OVERVIEW

(Open Box) Stunning style and a unique combination of hardware and pickups.

The Gibson 2013 Designer N-225 begins with a solid maple top and back, which has been chambered to reduce weight and improve resonance and sustain, with minimalist segmented f-holes to enhance its stylish modern look. The glued-in neck is also made from solid maple, and carved in a fast, slim '60s profile.

A solid rosewood fingerboard carries 22 medium-jumbo frets and striking block inlays, while the headstock displays the classic split-diamond inlay, long the sign of a Custom guitar from Gibson. The maple in the N-225 yields a tone that is sharp and bold, even through this hot pair of pickups. The hardware set retains the customized feel, which a set of Grover tuners, a tune-o-matic bridge, and a handy Vibrola tailpiece, all decked out in a black anodized plating.

While its looks sets it out as something entirely new, the N-225 powerful and versatile pickup complement truly stands it apart in the tone department. A fat Gibson P-90 pickup in the neck position offers that blend of warmth and slightly gritty, detailed grind that has made this single-coil a favorite of so many players since its arrival in the 1940s. In the bridge position, a Gibson Dirty Fingers humbucker redesigned by pickup guru Jim DeCola gives you scorching lead tones in full humbucking mode, with the power to push your amp into crunchy rhythm or singing sustain. A traditional three-way toggle switch and a master tone control complete the package.

The N-225 comes protected in a black Gibson hardshell case, and include a Gibson owner's manual and adjustment literature. Includes case.

She's my little rockabilly hot rod guitar, with all the pinstriping by Harris! Love the custom split-diamond headstock inlay and fretboard block inlays. It was just a little too blacked-out goth for me, so I swapped out the black knobs for red-black-white speed knobs and the black truss-rod cover for a gold one with a singe red jewel. The maple neck feels nice, doesn't bend out of tune, good jumbo frets, and the width is just right. While others complain of the fingerboard beyond the strings, I like it for bending strings. I was going to swap out the P-90 neck pickup for a mini-humbucker, but this P-90 is quiet almost like a humbucker - much less hum than on my 1947 Gibson ES-150. And it has a smooth jazz tone I love. Adjusting the hot-rod bridge pickup gives me a little more twang and a whole lotta output. The maple neck and hollowed-out body are heavier, but not like a Les Paul. I like the new design f-holes. The tonal range is great from jazzy to twangy, with some power rocker and other tones in-between. I can't get the ES335 woody sound, even though hollowed-out with f-holes. But no feedback either. She's a joy!

I am on my second N-225 from Musicians Friend and I have to say that I have no clue why Gibson made this thing. . .

The first one arrived in a damaged case and could not be opened. The second one arrived in reasonable condition but it is somewhat disappointing. Since I am a Gibson collector, this oddball will remain in my collection so here we go with the review:

I own 50+ guitars and like to collect unique guitars versus having 20 Les Pauls. This definitely is a unique guitar! 2013 was not a good year for Gibson quality and this shows in this guitar. The guitar should be a scratch in dent due to the various scarring on it but I didn't want to deal with another return from Musicians Friend. The pickup knobs were scratched as well as the neck.

Upon strapping this up and plugging it in, I noticed that it is pretty neck heavy. The tone is not bright at all, in fact it is pretty muddy, on all settings. The tone is actually what I expected after viewing many YouTube reviews of it. The tremelo is about useless as it is stiff and if you look at it funny, it goes out of tune. It looks cool so it also met my expectation.

I will be taking this to my guitar tech to get a setup on it and get his assessment of it. This guitar is not something I would use playing a gig but it does look kind of cool on my wall. This is definitely a novelty in my book and not a true professional guitar.

Comments about Gibson 2013 N-225 Electric Guitar:

This guitar was on SDD when I purchased it. So the price was right to experiment with it. Mine played decently out of the case, it's a real nice hard shell Gibson case. The Dirty Fingers humbucker really impressed me. I ran it through a Fender Pro Junior and it sounded great. I think between the all maple construction and that humbucker this guitar has sustain for days and at some of the lowest volumes I've ever used with no pedals. O.K. by now if you've played awhile you know the Lyre tailpiece is more for show than go. So if you must try it go slow and easy and not to far and it will stay in relative tune. No dive bombs, etc.. I found the neck to be very bland feeling, no character, no binding on a guitar that retailed well over a grand. The custom headstock is very impressive looking. The guitar did feel heavy; the tone is great though. If it was stolen I would buy it again.

Comments about Gibson 2013 N-225 Electric Guitar:

I bought one of these in 2014 and jumped at the opportunity to get another as a SDOTD. My 'go to guitar' the P90 and Dirty Fingers strong ceramics makes for a tonal monster with vibrato and sweet hard case as well. I prefer this over my SGs, LPs, firebird or any of my Fenders. Odd looks contrasted by awesome tones.

Comments about Gibson 2013 N-225 Electric Guitar:

I picked this guitar up on closeout. I was anxious to see how a solid maple guitar would sound. Well I'll tell you with that "dirty fingers" humbucker, you had sustain for days. at low controllable volumes. I played it through my Fender Pro Junior and it was exquisite. You know its an ugly guitar and even for the closeout price I feel they could have done a better finish job on the neck. It just flat out had no personality.

Comments about Gibson 2013 N-225 Electric Guitar:

I read the earlier reviews carefully before buying this guitar as a SDOTD. The price was great, but I still wanted to be sure I was getting a great guitar. I have played a Gibson Les Paul for several years. I absolutely love the LP tone, and my only critique of my LP is that it's hard to access the upper frets. I also had been looking for a guitar with P90 pickups and a tremolo bridge. This guitar addresses all of my "needs," and sounds fantastic. I love the 60s profile neck, which is the same as my LP. I also love the great access to the upper frets. Nobody had commented about that, but the fret access is akin to that if an SG. The pickups are fantastic, and the splittable humbucker really makes a difference and creates a wide variety of available tones. The P90 sounds full and warm -- I'm a blues guy at heart, and it is a great, bluesy tone. I have not had any problems yet with the guitar staying in tune, and the tremolo feels really solid. If I had one criticism, it would be that the satin finish on the black looks a little flat, but that's part of the aesthetic and the vibe. I love the guitar and applaud Gibson for making something off the beaten path that is geared to playability and flexibility.

Although a little neck heavy strapped on, has perfect balance on lap when sitting. This guitar is extremely high quality and had perfect set up out of the box except for one string needed a slight intonation adjustment. Each guitar was hand done regarding the pin striping.

Comments about Gibson 2013 N-225 Electric Guitar:

This guitar is great. The pickups and the combination provides great sound and versatility. The vibrato works great and has excellent playability. It looks like a guitar version of a rat rod which I really like. My criticism is that the frets were uneven and sharp on the ends. I had to take it to a Gibson Tech for fret dressing. This should not be the case for a new guitar. I have purchased several other Gibsons new over he past few years where this was also the case. The other oddity that I do not personally like is that the neck/fretboard is wider than strings as determined by the nut and bridge. This may be a design feature but I find it a little annoying. I would have rated it as 5 stars but for these issues. On the whole, I am very pleased.

Bought this through a Stupid Deal and very happy with the purchase. Set up well from the factory. Thick chambered body provides rich tone. Some minor hardware issues and scratches. Comes with a custom fit hard case. Overall, enjoyable to play, good sounding and unique look.

After having it set up locally and the frets worked on it is a very good to excellent guitar. Like the pick up configuration and it sounds great. Would have given it a higher grade except for all the set up work that to be done even though there were check lists with the guitar that said the work had already been done. The work when added to the price of the guitar still make it a great value'

This is my Second Gibson and unlike the first I loved how it felt in hand from the start. The neck was very comfortable although the action was a bit high out of the box but all guitars need to be set up. The Dirty fingers plus is a very hot pickup. If you want a hot thick lead this works to balance the bright maple body and neck tonally. You have a somewhat duller classic P90 pickup on the neck yet these two pickups work great together. The guitar also has a coil split on the Dirty Fingers plus and this is where the real trick comes in. It has a Gibson Vibrola. The Vibrola is best suited for more gentle swells and shimmer not dive bombing. Some people have suggested that Vibrola's give their own tone unlike a fixed tailpiece.I think this was Gibson's shot at a Thinline Telecaster. You have the small chambered areas and the single coil pickups working together for a very usable sound on (i'm using) an EL84 equipped amp. It has become my go to guitar that I keep closest in the house. I think its worth a try especially at the price. The case is a faux black snake flat case like the old fenders but plush lined and internally molded for this guitar. A nice touch. Would I have paid the price originally asked BY Gibson, No. At its price a real Gibson at a good price.

I own 19 high end electric guitars, 6 of them Gibson's. This is one of the best built and great playing guitars I've ever owned. Not sure about some of the other reviews about build quality - but my guitar was flawless out of the case. The intonation was perfect. I considered replacing the p-90 but after playing the guitar for the last 3 weeks I've decided it's perfect the way it is. Gibson Knocked This particular guitar out of the park!!
