OVERVIEW

Classic PRS playability and reliability at a new price point.

The S2 Custom 24 takes the original PRS guitar, the Custom 24, and reimagines it with stripped-down features and a new aesthetic. Retaining the classic maple top/mahogany back combination, with the classic body shape & a new asymmetrical beveled top, this guitar is resonant with a funky familiarity. Its versatility comes from its custom-wound pickups and 3-way blade switch. Familiar for PRS players of old, and a fresh take for players of all types.

The S2 Story
The PRS S2 Series offers the fit, finish, feel, and attention to detail of PRS craftsmanship in a straightforward design. Standing for “Stevensville 2,” S2 Series instruments are made at the Maryland shop blending new design elements and manufacturing techniques with practiced quality control and workmanship to create reimagined, fresh guitars that reach a more affordable price for players.

The S2 Series is comprised of three models: the S2 Mira, S2 Starla, and S2 Custom 24. These models share several key features, including PRS S2 locking tuners, custom-wound pickups, PRS neck shapes, PRS S2 bridges as well as PRS fretwire, nuts, and double-action truss rods. The new asymmetrical, beveled body shape offers a vintage vibe, and the flatness of the top gives these guitars a big, resonant voice.

Whether the S2 Series means your first PRS or an addition to your arsenal, one thing is certain: each model in the PRS S2 Series is a solid American-made guitar that makes no sacrifice in playability or tone.

Features
The Woods
Wood is the foundation of a guitar’s tone. If you sacrifice the foundation, there is little hope of achieving an exceptional instrument. Believing this, PRS have chosen the same traditional tonewoods that are used on PRS Core guitars, such as maple tops, mahogany backs and bodies, mahogany necks, and rosewood fretboards. While some of the design and construction methods used in the S2 Series (the neck blank’s starting dimension across the Series and the S2 Custom’s wood grade, for example) allowed PRS to use less expensive and more readily available woods, no compromise has been made to the tone or integrity of S2 instruments.

Necks
A guitar should be comfortable and feel familiar from the moment you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. PRS S2 instruments feature a 25” neck with scarf-joint construction and the Pattern Regular neck shape, which stems back to the PRS “Regular” neck shape found on guitars made in the late 1980s in the Virginia Avenue Annapolis shop.

On the PRS S2 series, the neck begins with a quartersawn mahogany neck blank. That blank is cut, the headstock is scarfed, and the heel is built up using a plain splice. (A scarf joint is made up of two pieces of wood that are cut at complementary angles and glued together. A plain splice is a joining of two pieces of wood in the same line). These construction methods allow us to start with a smaller amount of raw materials, and the increased glue surface area results in a very strong joint. This technique combined with a pre-radiused, pre-fretted fretboard result in a very efficient, cohesive manufacturing process that creates a durable, comfortable, playable neck.

Width of the fretboard at the nut: 1 21/32"
Width at the body: 2 1/4"
Neck depth at the nut: 27/32"

Finish
Finish should do three things: most importantly, it should enhance the tone of a guitar. It should also feel good to the player’s touch, and it should look good. The finish used on the PRS S2 Series accomplishes these goals by featuring a polyester basecoat and an acrylic topcoat (reminiscent of the finish system used on PRS Core guitars for twenty years (before the introduction of V12)). PRS have updated the process of this finish system to allow S2 guitars to move through the finish hall smoothly and quickly while also requiring a thinner topcoat for optimal tone. This old-but-new finish maintains a hi-gloss, attractive aesthetic, and the translucent and opaque color options offer vintage and modern flavors that allow players to choose the look that fits them best.

Pickups & Electronics
PRS S2 Series proprietary pickups are built to exact specifications, including wire and coating materials, winds, and resistance. Whether harkening back to the original HFS and Vintage Bass pickups or designed to work with the unique tones of a Bigsby tailpiece, S2 pickups were designed to capture the distinct tonal character intended for each instrument in the series.

All of the models in the S2 Series feature a 3-way blade pickup switch with a master volume and a push/pull tone control. Coil-tap functionality adds versatility by allowing players to split the humbucking pickups into singlecoils, providing a vast array of tones. The jack assembly used on the S2 Series is the same jack as the Core line, providing a clean connection point to amplify your sound.

Tuners, Nuts & Bridges
The tone of a guitar is influenced by several factors: wood choice, body style, pickups, scale length, metals and other materials used, etc. Some of the most impactful components are those that directly affect the vibration of the strings: the tuners, the nut, and the bridge. This is because it is the strings’ vibration that the pickups sense and that creates the sound wave the ear will ultimately hear.

The bridge is the anchor of the guitar. It is here that the vibration of the string is transferred into the body of the guitar, bringing out the inherent tone of the woods chosen. Each S2 instrument features a different bridge style. The S2 Mira features the same stoptail that is used on Core PRS instruments. PRS use an unplated bridge with brass studs. The S2 Starla features a time-tested Tune-o-matic bridge with a Bigsby B50 tailpiece. The S2 Custom features a PRS tremolo (the same bridge found on the SE line of guitars).

The nut also plays a critical part in the transfer of tone. The nut on S2 instruments is the same nut PRS use on the Core guitars. The nut is strong and long-lasting without “grabbing” the strings, and it is imbued with brass, a highly musical metal.

PRS S2 locking tuners are used across the S2 Series. These proprietary tuners are reminiscent of the “Phase II” tuners and follow many of Paul Smith’s “tweaks,” including a brass shaft and specially-configured internal construction. The locking mechanism itself is identical to the one used on the Core guitars, which helps the guitar stay in tune.

Whether using parts shared by the Core manufacturing line or newly-sourced proprietary parts, PRS always chose to use musical materials (such as brass) and avoid materials that deaden tone (like nylon washers), maximizing the guitars’ overall resonance, musicality, and tone.

Other Appointments
The nut, jack assembly, fret wire, electronics knobs, and strings are all shared between Core and S2 instruments. It is long-lasting and is comfortable to play. The electronics’ knobs are made in PRS' own proprietary mold, which results in a handsome and ergonomic design. As with all of solidbody guitars, PRS use 10-46 strings. S2 Series guitars come in a nylon gig bag to make heading out for your next show that much easier.

I have been playing guitar and bass for over 20 years now, and, for me, a PRS has always been the Holy Grail of Guitars. I remember one day when I was about 12 (I'm 28 now), my mom took me to a Guitar Shop, and I played a PRS, and even then I fell in love - hard. I knew then that one day I needed to own one. Over the years, I have owned some very nice guitars - I had an Ibanez John Scofield, and a 1963 Feder Jaguar - both of which I, unfortunately, had to sell. They were amazing instruments, but never quite what I was looking for. Yesterday, I walked into a guitar store with the intention of buying an Ibanez AR or AM (both really good guitars, IMO) - but then the sales guy pointed out that they had one of these S2s used... and, after playing it for only a few minutes, I knew I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't buy it right there on the spot. So, trying my hardest to ignore that it was still a bit above my intended price range, I finally became the owner of a PRS!

The neck is absolutely perfect - I've never played an instrument easier to get around. I've never been a "fast" guitar player - that's never been my thing - but w. this neck, I very well could be if I wanted lol. I know it's sort of cliché, but the instrument feels more like an extention of myself than a seperate entity - the body almost molds into me. The tone is amazing, with the kind of clarity in each note I had always been looking for. With a bit of distortion, it has natural overtones that just sing! It sounds almost identical to a Core model PRS. Also, I have a bad back after being in a car accident, so I really appreciate how light and comfortable it is...

I can say with out a doubt that this is the best electric guitar I've ever owned, and easily one of the best I've ever played - higher end PRS's included. PRS did a fantastic job of streamlining, leaving everything that makes the guitar a real PRS intact. I suppose if I have any complaints (and this is fishing), the finish is little dark (I got it in Black Cherry) and I doubt if I were playing it live that the audience would be able to see the details of the awesome wood grain underneath - also, they call the 24th fret inlay an "owl" inlay, but I don't know, to me it just looks like an amorphous blob... whatever - it's still gorgeous.

Anyways, if you want a PRS, but can't afford the Core line, this is a perfect purchase - it IS a PRS, just streamlined. Alright - back to playing!

I have had this guitar for almost a year now, and when I first got it, I couldn't put it down. Things have changed since then. It plays quite well. The neck is fast and the pickups sound alright. I like the tuners, but if you transport it, it will go out of tune with hardly a bump. I have other low end USA made guitars that play as well or better than this guitar at half the cost. If I had not traded old gear on this guitar, I do not think that I would have purchased it. The thing that bothers me the most about it is the finish. It dings and chips if you so much as look at it. I would be curious to know if any other owners have this problem. Don't drop it on a pillow from an inch in the air or scrape it on a nice soft chair or else you will end up with a relic'd guitar. Which I suppose is alright in some cases. If you are looking for a guitar like this, I would suggest going with the SE models since they are very similar except for price. Or you could save a bit and buy a real USA PRS.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Ok, I've had this guitar for about 6 months now and I've finally decided to give my two cents. It's a GREAT guitar, but it does go out of tune! A lot! I watched various videos and read various comments stating that this trem system is just the greatest and that it never goes out of tune, but that's just not true. Even the ever so slight wobble will throw it out. I also blame the gig bag for much of my trouble maintaing a good solid tune. The tuners get turned inside the bag every time it gets transported. Other than the issues with tuning, this is a tremendous guitar. I would recommend it to any one if they are willing to upgrade to a solid case and put up with a sub par trem system.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

I picked one of these up, in Black Cherry, about 3 months ago and I have absolutely fallen in love with this instrument. The neck is fast without being too thin and access to the higher frets is completely unrestricted. The finish on this guitar is smooth and glistens in the light like a gem. I am in a few different bands that all play different styles of music. I used to have to lug around 3-4 guitars to get all the tones that I needed. With this guitar, and its coil-tapping (which is the best sounding tap I have ever heard...Paul must have done something special with the wiring or the pickups are designed to be tapped), I am able to get every tone I need with one guitar. The HFS bridge pickup lives up to its name as it is Hot, its Fat and its Screams. It also cleans up very nicely with the volume knob though. The Vintage Bass neck is warm and fuzzy, but never muddy. I can go from screaming leads to clean rhythm by rolling back the volume and tapping the Vintage Bass pickup. One of the biggest things I noticed about the quality construction of this guitar is just how solid the jack is and how nice the strap buttons are. The strap buttons are oversized so once you get your strap on, it will not ever fall off. The little things are what makes this guitar superior in constuction to a similarly priced Gibson or Fender. The only minor complaint I have is that the tremolo isn't great (stable enough, decent feel, but I personally just don't like it compared to a double locking floyd...I am not confident enough in the S2 tremolo to do dives on stage) and there is no option for a hardtail (unless you go with the 22 fret model). At the end of the day, you are getting a wonderful American made instrument, that plays almost as nice as a core Custom 24, for about half the price. I feel like this instrument defines the law of diminishing returns (the core Custom 24 is about a 5-10% better guitar for 50-75% more money). If you are looking for an all-around great guitar for under $1500, look no further and pick up a PRS S2.

High quality with an extremely reasonable price. I've played guitars valued at twice as much that lacked the amazing tone and feel of this guitar. Probably the single best guitar purchase I have made in my 29 years of playing.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

When I first saw this guitar introduced at NAMM last year, I was thinking to myself, whats the catch? Well after spending some time trying to figure out what was wrong with this guitar, I had come to find out...there is no catch, there is nothing wrong with this guitar, there isn't a trick, this is just a company that realized if they change just a few minor details, they can produce an instrument that is the highest quality possible at a reasonable price point. This guitar is the perfect example of the law of diminishing returns (this guitar is 90% as good as the Core series for 50% of the cost). Everything about this guitar oozes quality craftsmenship. Little things like the strap buttons being oversized to create an extremely secure attachment to the strap or the output jack feeling like its bulletproof put this guitar on a higher level than other guitars at this price point. The neck on this guitar is just the right thickness, it plays very fast, but it also has a little bit of meat to it. With a finshed back of the neck, it glides really smoothly and has a somewhat waxy feel. What really sold me on this instrument was the amount of natrual harmonics and overtones that come through at any amp setting. This is due to the quality of the tone woods (Mahogany core with flame maple top) that this guitar is made up of. The coil tapping sounds wonderful and can get nice and gritty when the tone knob is rolled back (kind of tele like sounds, especially on the tapped neck pickup). The volume knob is extremely useful on this guitar as well. When the volume is dialed back, this guitar retains the high's and doesn't get muddy or thin. The vibrato on this guitar is more stable than i had expected. Don't expect to dive bomb this whammy, but if your using it as a smooth slow vibrato or fast, narrow stabs, this guitar will stay in tune...thanks to the graphite nut imbued with brass. The only complaint I have with this guitar, is that the trem arm is always in the way. It blocks the vol/tone knobs or it causes me to alter my picking technique. The only place that is comfortable is turned 180 deg away, but then its takes to long to spin it into position to use when needed. Overall, I would have to say this is the single highest quality guitar that you can get at this price point. This guitar is extremely well designed and well thought out, which makes this (and other S2 line guitars) the best modern guitar under $1500 (new)

Looks stunning. Plays and sounds great . Tuning stability 9.5/10. Large 50s type les Paul neck ( the baseball bat) feels excellent . Only complaints are only comes with a gig bag and some hardware buzz on a $1400 guitar is upsetting. This thing shreds fast fretboard smooth. Overall 9/10

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Hey people, just a quick review here. This s2 custom is really an amazing guitar. I have two SE PRS guitars, and ESP LTD, and an Ibanez and to be honest this just blows them out of the water. I play a lot of progressive rock/death metal (opeth, porcupine tree, dream theater) style music and this is perfect for it. Very versatile, full tone, harmonics squeal, the clean channel is the warmest I've heard, and picks up feedback very well. For the money I have to give it a 10. Also no tuning issues.

Very well made as you might expect from PRS. Beautiful finish, fine craftsmanship. This guitar has great tone and holds it's tune very, very well.
If you just wanted one very fine guitar that won't break the bank, you would have to search long and hard to beat this one.
Anyone would be proud to haul this bad boy out on stage.
