Singlecut sensation with new finish, neck shape, and bridge.
A vintage-inspired singlecut with an artist-grade top, the SC 58 is perfect for more traditional single-cutaway players. The 24-1/2" scale length and electronics appointments make this instrument instantly comfortable to players who grew up using short-scale guitars. The PRS 2-piece bridge is the anchor of this guitar and enhances the natural tone of the woods.
2-Piece Adjustable Bridge
Previously only prototyped on Private Stock guitars, the new two-piece adjustable PRS bridge now comes standard on two new PRS models – the SC58, and the JA-15. Bridge specifications include triple weight saddles, triple weight thumb wheels, large posts, and extra mass. The added weight increases contact points and creates a more resonant, musical instrument. Machining rather than casting give the brass and aluminum bridge a stronger sound, and the quick-change style stoptail doesn’t fall when the strings are removed. “I am calling it the ‘New 2-piece adjustable sound transfer bridge’—We are very happy,” said Paul Reed Smith.
With a classic, resonant voice that is eminently recordable and gig ready, this beauty won't just take everything you've got and keep asking for more, it will do it with unforgettable sound and style.
The SC 58 also incorporates the following new features:
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.
Pattern Neck Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for us and a hallmark of our quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. Perfected after years of prototyping, the new "Pattern" neck is an updated Wide Fat PRS neck style based on Paul's pre-factory design. These necks were found on the instruments built for Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton and Howard Leese from the late 70's to the mid 80's.
Whether in woodworking, machining, or cast and die work, pattern making is the art of arriving at a perfect standard which can be duplicated or used to create new designs by "offsetting." All of our necks came to be as a result of offsetting from this original, Wide Fat design.
PRS Two-piece Adjustable Bridge
Previously only prototyped on Private Stock guitars, the new PRS two-piece adjustable bridge now comes standard on two PRS models: the SC 58 and the JA 15. The bridge plays a crucial role in the tonal path of a guitar by transferring the string's vibrations to the tonewood. When executed well, the bridge will enhance the wood's natural resonance. This two-piece bridge has added weight and mass, creating more contact points, which, in turn, create a more resonant, musical instrument. Similarly, machining rather than casting, gives the brass and aluminum bridge a stronger sound. "I am calling it the 'new two-piece adjustable sound transfer bridge' – I'm very happy," said Paul Reed Smith.

Comments about PRS SC 58 Nickel Hardware Electric Guitar:
The SC58 is a guitar player's axe. Everything about it is inspirational: from the absolutely perfectly matched flamed maple top, bindings, fit and finish, to the feel of the neck and the tone from the 57/08 pickups. There are so many thoughtful touches that make this guitar an absolute pleasure to play; like the contoured body and the shape of the neck. Right out of the box I didn't have to change a thing, a perfect setup. The guitar feels solid, on the heavy side but well balanced. The neck shape and fingerboard are so comfortable that playing feels effortless; playing quick runs are a joy and the strings seem to have very little tension on them. And the sound is unbelievable. The pickups are very clear, with great note separation and fully articulate throughout the volume pot range, producing many useful tones. They sound amazing clean and overdriven. And when cranked, there's plenty of midrange for solos but not too much "honk" or mud. I think these 57/08's have a better all-around tonal balance than a typical Gibson '57 PAF type pickup, making this guitar a lot more versatile than what one might expect from a Les Paul type guitar. I play all kinds of music professionally, and I can do it all on this axe. I've had mine for over a year and still absolutely love it. I don't know why PRS discontinued the SC58 but very glad I have one!
Comments about PRS SC 58 Nickel Hardware Electric Guitar:
If you're looking for a singlecut, 2-Humbucker guitar and the price tag hasn't scared you off, don't even think about looking at anything else. Pick your favorite finish and go for it!
You can read the full list of features above, I'll just go into the specifics that stand out to me. The first thing that I have to say about my finish (Black Gold Wraparound Burst) is that I have not seen a single photo that can truly capture how amazing it looks. The hue of the gold is not over the top or cheesy, but it's also not the plain (yet gorgeous) vintage brown burst that it shows up as in most pics. As soon as you open the case, there's an immediate WOW factor. I have a student who has also just purchased an SC58, but in the McCarty Burst. I don't like it as much as I do mine, but it's still stunning.
The 57/08 pickups are amazing! Very meaty, yet completely transparent. PRS uses original machines and materials from the 50's to make these! That's as authentic as it gets... My definition of good tone is that I want to hear the wood and strings at all gain levels. There's no mud or overhype whatsoever with these pickups. They are clear with a chunky low end and nicely rounded crystalline highs - never piercing. The variety of useful tones in the middle position is beyond anything that I've ever experienced on a 2-Humbucker guitar. Rolling back either volume knob keeps your tone completely transparent.
The Phase III tuners are very stable and the whole guitar sounds more in tune than anything I've ever played (including my other PRS!). That may sound like a trivial statement, but if you're trying to make a living playing guitar, you know how important that is!
The 2 piece bridge does a stellar job transferring resonance to the wood and you can hear and feel that even before plugging in. Every component on this baby is designed with TONE in mind!
Reaching the upper frets is just as comfortable on this singlecut as it is on my doublecut PRS 513 model. No idea how they did it...
Most everyone knows that the worksmanship on all high-end PRSs is second to none. I also own a gorgeous 513 model and both of these guitars are an absolute joy to pick up. From the basic tone and resonance of the woods to the quality of the finishes and components - the look, feel, but especially the sound of a PRS is a top shelf ownership experience. I mean, even the case is a functional work of art!
You kind of have to gulp, calling a $4K guitar a great VALUE, but it really is! I make my living playing and recording music, so I can't really afford to splurge on a pretty piece of "display art" of a guitar. The SC58 is a great investment, because of the quality of tone and playability that you get wrapped in this gorgeous package. That translates to inspiration and great performances!
