Comments about Schecter Guitar Research Synyster Gates Special Left Handed Electric Guitar:
To begin, as a left handed player, finding a decent guitar is often a lesson in futility. The big two, Fender and Gibson, make a couple of standard models, which play fine, and have a no frills approach, but if you want something more edgy, exotic, with active electronics, or a boutique bridge/trem system, you are out of luck.
I found salvation in Schecter when I got a Devil Custom as a gift from my wife. Since then, I have become an avid Schecter enthusiast. In my opinion, they are the only company that cares enough about left handed players to have a model in virtually every line they produce. The selections are wonderful. In addition, as a metal player, the advantages of having active, or hot-wound pickups, and trem systems like the original German made Floyd Rose are a breath of fresh air.
The Synyster Gates model is a very nicely made guitar. The action is low, but not buzzing low. The frets on the model I bought have the Crosses, which are flashy enough to look good onstage, but not too much for the purist. Pickups on this guitar are hot, and distorted, probably not ideal for a lot of clean playing. I got an ok clean sound, but in all honesty, prefer the active EMG's for this, and will most likely use this guitar for soloing, and heavy songs specifically.
I play slinky D'Addario EXL120's, and tune a half step down, so I required a setup locally for this to make sure everything was perfect. The tech commented on what a nice guitar this was right out of the box. N truss adjustment needed, and only slight tweaking to set up the bridge to my specs. the Floyd Rose original trem is included on this model, and I believe is worth it's weight in gold. Even with new strings at a light gauge, I am having no issue with intonation, even after hammering the trem as well as high squeals and bending...great locking system.
My only cons on this guitar would be the weight, a little on the heavy side compared to my Devil Custom, and the lack of body contouring. Once you get used to the contour routing, a flat shaped guitar does take a bit of playing to get used to... My final complaint is no case. This might seem petty, as alot of companies do not sell guitars with cases included, but for a lefty, modeled cases are impossible to find. Schecter does not even carry a molded case for this model, only a generic one, whereas the right handed model has a specific molded case. Now, I know it might not be as high of a build run for lefty cases, but adding a molded case for a guitar with this distinctive a shape seems like a no brainer to me...
All in all, an awesome addition to my arsenal. A guitar worth every penny, and one i will be using in addition with my other Schecter for years to come.
