I'm a luthier and bought this guitar out of curiosity after reading the reviews and specs. I am going to build a Parlor guitar so decided I would take a look at this one for dimensions. Looking inside the box the workmanship is impeccable. No glue drips, no rough braces, bridge plate not splintered like a lot of factory guitars, and all glued joints are superb. Outside the box the guitar is flawless. The Sitka top has a lot of silk (medular rays) and the back/sides of rosewood and maple are have a superb finish. The binding is wood, not plastic. How often do you see that on a factory guitar? Set up was perfect with low action. No buzzes and frets are smooth. Neck has exactly the right amount of relief so I didn't have to adjust the truss rod. I replaced the plastic bridge pins with bone and was presently surprised to find that the compensated saddle is bone, not plastic as typically comes with factory guitars. Tuners are excellent with no slippage and I actually like the feel of the rubber type tuner buttons. Intonation was right on. The only minor fix was a tight G string slot at the nut which took about a minute to fix with some fine sandpaper. Sound is amazing for a small guitar. It is not a Dread or OM so does not sound like one and I would not compare the sound but I have played other parlor guitars and this beats the others from T and M. This guitar is extremely comfortable to play and I plan to hang onto it. I have built a lot of guitars over the past 10 years and played just about every guitar brand out there. This little guitar is just amazing. If you get one set up and sounding like mine you won't be disappointed. The value is amazing. It costs me as much for materials before I start building as I paid for this guitar. I think it is a best kept secret and once the word gets out there will be a run on these guitars. One other note, back and sides are laminated rosewood but that does not affect the sound as a lot of people believe. Forgot to mention that Musicians Friend is an excellent company that I have deal with for years. The guitar arrived in 4 days and they have a fair return policy.

Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
This is a high quality guitar with a working mans budget and looks like a much higher end guitar. Out of the box it had a low action and was very playable without having to have it set up first. If your not happy with it's tonal qualities they can be adjusted to suit your ear taste with the options out there for saddle modification and/or material (Bone). OVERALL RATING…. 5 Stars - Quality, 5 Stars - Playability, 5 Stars - Adaptability, and 5 Stars - She's a Looker, I love that large triangular inlay on the back panel and the front body binding is "Pretty-Pretty". I highly recommend this guitar if you're looking for a Parlor Style Acoustic Guitar to add to your guitar collection or guitar family. Cheap at half the price….

I wanted this guitar so much I accepted it knowing it does not come with a preamp and the 406 is out of production. I was not willing to pay a local luthier to repair this new guitar from MF and I returned as defected. MF paid the shipping.
Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
I think it's a good instrument, the special size makes it very attractive. A transparent pickguard would prevent scratches and rosewood saddle pins would improve the sound. A broader neck (up to 2 mm) would improve the playability in the lower register of the neck. I think it will sound terrific with a soundhole magnetic pickup.
Kudo to Musician's Friend the guitar arrived flawless in Switzerland after 8 days.
A good built guitar, the back maple center seems to be simply a decorative veneer, in fact the is built with 2 rosewood pieces. A positive point is that saddle & nut are really bone and the binding real wood.
Well balanced guitar, however the factory setup was probably made for slide. I will have up to 2 or 3 hours work to make it a confortable guitar: the nut must drasticaly be filed down, the same is necessary for the saddle. This can be seen as a positive if we consider that every hi-end masterbuilt classical or stell string must be individually set up for the personal taste of the player. If you can't do it yourself, it will cost up to 100 or 200 bucks by a good professional luthier.
Price vs quality deserves the best rating.
Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
The tuner issue keeps this out of 10 territory, but other than that This guitar is perfect!
The fit and finish looks like it cost 5 times what it did!
The tuner buttons are carefully crafted to look like metal buttons that have been coated in some sort of rough textured rubber. They are in fact cheap plastic and my high E broke in half the first time I tried to tune it. Trying to deal with Takamine or MF over something so minor is WAY to much trouble so I found a button from an old Asian Strat that fits and I'm just going to play it like that.
Without the tuner button issue, this guitar could give Martin and Taylor nightmares! This is easily a $1000- $1500 guitar with a poor boys price tag!
Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
I was looking for a small bodied guitar for songwriting and general noodling. This guitar has more bass than expected and is well balanced overall. I have played guitars at three times the price and they didn't even compare. Better get one before everyone discovers them.
This guitar has features found only on much more expensive guitars. The craftsmanship is excellent and the inlays and detail are stunning. Good tuners, a well seated bridge and a beautiful finish.
There are no glue drips on the inside that I can see and the bracing is as solid as a rock. Details is perfect as is the finish and all of the wood is gorgeous. Neck is straight and the bridge is well seated and flat. Intonation is spot on even with a Conn Strobe.
I can't believe that Takamine can build such a guitar at this price and even better that Musician's Friend sells it at such a great discount.

Ok, I just went and spent 5 hours playing this little cutie and she's awesome. One thing is, yes while she isn't a Martin D-28 she is so much more than your average 00 or 000! People I'm 50 years old and when I bought my first Martin, Guild, and Gibson I was 13 through 15 and I don't remember spending over 1,000 as they were purchased from money I earned as a paper boy. Give this guitar a chance because the beautiful tone from this instrument does put the SMALL Martin's to shame!!!
Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
This review goes out to Jillian.. Ho hum? This guitar is AMAZING! Sure it may not be a Martin but maybe it wasn't set it up right? I bought this guitar at the store right out of the box and once set up, it played very well. I like the low action on this acoustic, I was surprised at how easy it was to bend the strings and how well it sounds at its size. I only wish it could be an electric-acoustic. If you want a martin, go buy a martin, not a takamine.
Comments about Takamine G Series G406S New Yorker Acoustic Guitar:
I have been playing guitar for 3 years now. I have not played with too many high end guitars. However, I would say this sounds more like a Taylor guitar. The more I play this guitar the more I love it. It is beautiful to look at and plays so easy. It needs a little setting up and it is good to strum. I was a little hesitant when it came down to the smaller size but the fretboard is perfect. It is lows the hum and highs that sound like butter. It is a perfect guitar for the price. The smaller size doesn't matter when it comes comes to the tone. If you are like me, don't worry about the size. You will not be disappointed.
