Limited Editon tonewoods, a popular body shape and Taylor ES-N electronics.
The Taylor 2012 Fall Limited Grand Auditorium Quilt Sapele Nylon String Acoustic-Electric Guitar has a great tone profile from its evocative wood pairing. Not only is the rare quilted sapele used for this series visually different from the sapele used elsewhere in the Taylor line, its tonal response is also distinctive. These flatsawn sets have more flex, which translates into greater power and warmth on the low end. A premium European spruce top is the perfect complement, blending elements of Adirondack spruce’s robust output with a hint of cedar’s warmth. Quilted sapele and ivoroid appointments, including a diamond “Solitaire” inlay scheme, add elegant sophistication to the presentation.
Grand Auditorium (GA)
Body Length: 20" / Body Width: 16" / Body Depth: 4-5/8"
Taylor's most popular and versatile body shape, the mid-size Grand Auditorium, arrived in 1994 bearing refined proportions that fell between a Dreadnought and Grand Concert. While the bigger Dreadnought was traditionally considered a flatpicker’s guitar and the smaller Grand Concert catered to fingerstylists, the GA was designed to deliver on both fronts. The shape produced an original acoustic voice that was big enough to handle medium-strength picking and strumming, yet with impressive balance across the tonal spectrum, especially in the midrange, producing clear, well-defined notes that suited both strumming and fingerstyle playing. The GA’s overall presence tracks well with other instruments both in a studio mix and on stage, and singer-songwriters have embraced its utility both for composing and traveling with one guitar. Many people want a single guitar that can cover a variety of styles, which is why the GA continues to be the bestselling shape. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the multi-dimensional GA won’t let you down.
Origin: West Africa
In contrast to the relatively straight-grained sapele used for backs and sides in Taylor’s 300 Series, quilted sapele is an extremely rare and precious find. Rare enough that years can pass between appearances. While standard sapele is normally quartersawn, which contributes to its overall stiffness, quilted sapele is often flatsawn. This not only allows the beautiful figure to be showcased to maximum effect, it also produces more flex in the wood. This translates tonally into slightly more power and warmth than standard sapele, which typically has a mahogany-like tone with a more pronounced treble zing.
Goes Well With: Most playing styles. Like standard sapele, it’s a great all-purpose tonewood that will respond well to a variety of playing styles. If you like mahogany, you’ll like this tone profile. Strummers will appreciate the extra power in the lower midrange, while fingerstylists will enjoy the warmth.
Like the the ES-T, The ES-N is a single-source, undersaddle transducer, but the preamp design and tone controls were customized to complement the nylon-string voice. Our standard ES control knobs enable plenty of tone-shaping and preserve the natural design aesthetic. Installed on nylon-string models.
