Good Sound, poor quality control

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

I really like the sound of this guitar, after I put a good set of Gibson strings on it. It's great to have a full sounding travel guitar after having owned several "Sticks with strings". For the most part the guitar looks good and it's definately a keeper. However, I feel ripped off a bit by Voyage Air because of the poor quality control on the neck. The neck has a definate rough spot at a location that doesn't interfere with my hand that I consider a blemish. The Voyage Air folks basicaly said too bad, learn to live with it. I consider that poor service and felt the guitar should have been discounted as a blemished item. I won't send it back but I would never buy one of these without playing and inspecting it first. And, since no one sells these in a local store that means I'll never buy another. Can't beat having a full sized guitar on the road.
Everything but the neck was great.
Would have been a great value except for the neck.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

To sum up, the guitar is pretty awesome value, the folding design works great, it has nice action out of the box, lovely tone for fingerstyle; however the attention to detail/qa on mine wasn't great. So be prepared for some work and some additional money to get one of these working properly. Its worth it IMO.

The first thing I noticed when picking up my VAOM-04 were the frets were really sharp on the edges, so whenever you move your hand up and down neck the sharp edges caught on my hand. I didn't cut myself but could have. On close inspection they were pretty poorly finished.

OK so not a huge deal to file them down, took an hour or so to dress the edges. When I restringed I noticed also the pins are pretty low quality and didn't fit the pin holes on bridge well. Replacement pins are not costly though. The tuners are OK but it can wander a little bit out of tune more than would be ideal when playing with gusto.

With such a lack of attention to detail and cheap pins and tuners, however, I am more than pleasantly surprised to say after fixing those issues, it plays really really well. Much more like a far more expensive instrument.

The action was low and easy without adjustment, tones lovely and balanced to my ear (for fingerstyle). Intonation good. Really easy to play, the neck width, the woods, its all really good.

I did a lot of research before I brought my VAOM-04 happy to report its main feature, folding, works a treat. Its perfect for travelling. When its unfolded you really would know its not a standard OM.

So I have to say I am very happy with my purchase, however I would warn prospectve purchasers that you'll probablly be in for a fret dress from your local luthier (or yourself), some new bridge pins and possibly some locking tuners (Schaller 8-). If your up for that this is a little gem! Hey experienced guitarists probably would want to set it up properly anyway!

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

I travel a lot in my motorhome and always want a guitar along. I'd bought a Backpacker a few years ago but haven't played it much, it sounds way to tinny (like a ukulele) and has little volume. The Voyage-air, on the other hand, has the full sound of my Aria full-size guitar with the advantage of taking up half the room. I've only had it a week but already love it. The sound is every bit as good as any guitar that I've ever played. The case appears very well thought out, should protect it well. Would have liked a zipper pocket for tuner, capo and spare picks. I look forward to many years of playing.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar for the only purpose of taking it with me to my frequent business traveling. But I assure you it is more than that. I'm still surprised as to how rich this guitar sounds and how it stays in tune when you fold it back. I changed the strings to EXP's but that's a personal preference. I will buy a pickup to use this live. Mine was bought open box here in MF and I'm still looking from previous signs of use. I don't know why I waited so long to get one of these.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

I had to return the first one cause of quality issues but MF exchanged it no problem. The replacement is fine and I am surprised by the volume this thing produces. The play ability for a traveling instrument exceeds my expectations. Only time will tell how this instrument holds up. So far, so good.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Songwriter VAOM-04 Travel Acoustic Guitar:

Although I've only had it for two weeks, I am totally convinced of its worth to me. My VAOM -04
has its own "voice", but that being said, it is easy to play and tonally compares favorably with my D-18
and Alvarez Yairi cy118. Its hinge seems of quality, and anyway has a lifetime warranty. Finally a guitar to evade both the airline restrictions on overhead storage, and the "not to careful" baggage handlers on the tarmac.
        Thank You Voyage Air :)
