I recently purchased this guitar for my Wife and have it hanging next to my Martin. For the price it sounds great and seems very well made. It's a smaller body and my Wife found it easier to play vs a full sized guitar.

She chose the green "burst" model and it is much darker than the one pictured here. It looks fantastic.

The on-board tuner is a nice touch and seems very accurate. I have it amplified through a 60w Crate acoustic amp and am very pleased with its overall sound.

If you are looking for a beginner guitar spend the extra cash and get this one...it is far better than the "packs" guitars and well worth it. I've see the white finish model and it also looks very good - I may buy that one myself!

I've been playing for 6 years, and play just under a profesional level. The sound isn't amazing, but it isn't horible. If you do recording with acoustic guitars, this deffinetly isn't your guitar. However, if you play live this is your guitar. Its lightweight, comfortable to hold, and the jack is in the strap button which is awesome. The built in tuner is great also.

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar for a recording project that I wanted a broad range of guitar sounds. This guitar does get me that range, and I find it easier to play that my other accoustic guitars. I also use this with A Boss Looper Pedal and the results are fantstic.
Guitar pickup & auto tuner works well. Has a cutout which improves playability. Kind of a fat sound to it amplified, a little thin unplugged.
I got the white finish model-finish was flawless. The guitar build is quite sturdy, yet compact, and very playable out of the box. Tuner works well, as do controls for the pickup.
I also have the Ibanez Talman, and the Yamaha is a little better than the Ibanez, but, not as much so as the price difference. Amplified, they are no different since my amplifier has a 5 band equalizer and I can get them to sound pretty much identical, but, unplugged the Yamaha has a much more full sound to it. I would not reccommend either of these guitars if you play unplugged more than 50% of the time though.

Not just a backup guitar...

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have to give this guitar a 10 because the things I don't particularly like in no way affect it's performance or playability or appearance... Yet, cuz I'm sure I'll have a hole dug in the body pretty quick cuz of no pick guard..haha.
The only negative comments I have for the Yamaha APX 500 are based on my preferences and may not present a problem at all to most. However I like pick guards, this one obviously has none. I don't like plugging in through the strap button, and I don't like having to unplug when I'm not playing... If you don't unplug, you'll have a dead guitar in a hurry at the cost of a couple AA batteries. That's all the bad. (not too bad huh?) Now for the Good...

I've never played a faster neck... I don't know what Yamaha finished the necks with but It works and works well. Came set up nicely with a super low action, changing the batteries is a snap, stunning looks, nice and comfortable to play...great for sitting on the couch or easy chair w/ some sacrifice in tone due to it's thin design...that is until you plug in and then it'll give the worlds best guitars a run for their money.
Absolutely amazing quality... Unbelievable for a guitar in this price range.
It would not be possible to beat this guitar for the price... Amazing value! Keep it up Yamaha!

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was having trouble finding a guitar in the 300-400 price range. I was looking at the ibanez EW20ASE, but I realized I didn't want to spend that much money for a guitar I would only be using when plugged in. The Yamaha APX500ii is amazing when plugged in! And it sounds even better plugged into my POD XT Live. I only knew it sounded good before I bought it because I know 2 people who have them. My advice, get this guitar if your debating around this price range and your not worried about what it sounds like acoustically. I have been playing guitar for 11 years. And this is a steal for [$]. And you get to choose different colors. I chose natural, I think it looks great! I took 1 star away because no solid top. Just make sure you get decent strings if you want a little more Umph when playing acoustically. I got 12 gauge phosphor bronze strings to bring out that warmer tone. The case that fits it is the apx vinyl hard shell

Beautiful, Nice-Quality Guitar

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The guitar looks great, has a built-in tuner, plays well, sounds great unplugged and plugged in as well.
On-board tuner is nice, but sometimes it's a little finicky. But it gets the job done.
The finish is nice, the guitar looks very good. The action isn't too high either.
Well worth the money.

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had bought a Yamaha Dreadnought, and was not overwhelmed with it so I rarely played it as I have other Dreadnoughts that I thought were better. I came back to return it and went looking fro a replacement. I saw this, and played it. The beautiful sound impressed me right away. Clear,bell-like tones on the high end and equally deep lows made me buy this guitar. It stays in tune and is a joy to play. I think any player in the spectrum would enjoy themselves on the gem. Well made and a nice price. You'll love it, as I do. It's my go to guitar.

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The Yamaha APX500II is my first acoustic-electric guitar, and it works amazing. I have always liked thinner necks, but my Epi Les Paul 100 doesn't have that luxury. This ultra-thin neck is perfect for my tastes. The thinner body also gives off a brighter and more cheery sound, which sounds really great. The factory strings sound really good for a while, but they still should change because the feel grimy after a bit. Also, my dream guitar is a Taylor, and it looks and feels like a Taylor, just a little smaller. All in all, I'd definetly buy this guitar if you need a good acoustic electric.

Great Electric Accoustic Guitar

By James Tandberg

from Texas

See all my reviews

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

For the money, this is a great accoustic electric guitar. It plays well and it has a really good accoustic sound.
This is a very nice electric accoustic guitar. Built in tuner, EQ, and volume control really upgrade this guitar. The electronics run off 2 AA batteries - nice. The mid range EQ has an adjustable frequency slide control. This helps control the brightness. I like the thinner body design - not as bulky. Having the guitar a little closer to your body improves the playability. The cutaway allows playing near the 12th fret easier.
I own (and still have ) 3 other Yamaha guitars. I feel like they are a great value for the money. The built in tuner is accurate and easy to use. The 3 band EQ helps you find your personal sound.
This guitar has all the bells and whistles.

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Tone is excellent on this gtr. The neck felt good, the action was very comfortable, very easy to play .
Battery's are very easy to change out and are AA's not a 9 volt , which are a lot cheaper to replace.

Can't ask for a better gtr' for the price.

No fears...buy it!

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Went to the music store today to grab a quick lower end acoustic electric for a recording project. Last one I picked up to try was the Yamaha. I was BLOWN AWAY. I echo what everyone else here says about neck feel, tone, craftsmanship, etc. I will probably go back and get a 2nd one to store away in case this one ever gets damaged or stolen. I have high end guitars...this one truly is not far off the mark in sound and ease of playing.

Great Buy!

By lucas Rennie

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar because I had some extra money and my original Fender acoustic was too large to play on stage and it didn't have a built in pickup and equalizer. Right out of the box this guitar sounded great! I took a few hours to warm up but after a while, I tuned it up with the built-in tuner and it was unbeliveable. It is a Martin quality guitar but it doesn't look like it, and it certainly doesn't sound like it which is why this is a great buy.

Comments about Yamaha APX500II Thinline Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

When I got it, it was a really nice guitar, and since I live in a pretty small NY apartment, I kept bumping it around and it was just fine, only a few scratches. However, after a few months, I thought I should redo the strings, and as I was taking them off, the nut just slid off. I picked up my guitar to inspect and then the bridge saddle fell off. There wasn't evidence of glue anywhere, so I don't know if this problem is just me or all around. Everything was fine once I redid the strings and the tension held them in again, but it was not a good choice by Yamaha. If you're a beginner, though, not a problem.
