Comments about Yamaha GC12 Handcrafted Classical Guitar:

Yamaha's equivilant to the Cordoba C9, both with solid mahogany back and sides and solid spruce or cedar top. I've played both. The Yamaha is a much better instrument all around, and sounds and plays like a dream. VERY refined tone. Cordoba likes to put heavy truss rods in their guitars, for some unknown reason. It makes the guitar heavy and awkward, and you will never ever adjust it. The cedar is much nicer than the spruce, by the way. This guitar is NOT bass heavy, or "favor the lower registers" as some reviewers have said. That's a general statement for cedar/mahogany, and does not apply to the GC12 cedar. This guitar sparkles in the trebles, and has a tight, refined tone in the bass. Put on high tension strings and lower the action, which is too high from the factory, as on most guitars. If you can't afford a 5,000 - 10,000 guitar, but want a very high quality factory made instrument, go for this. Another reviewer is right in that the rosewood models (GC22 and up) are not worth the extra money, in my opinion.

Better than the gc32

By Perez

from Washington

Comments about Yamaha GC12 Handcrafted Classical Guitar:

I've played the gc22s and the gc32s. First off, this guitar plays better with the matte finish on the neck. Secondly, and this was a surprise, the gc12c sounds better. Much crisper highs, deeper basses, and a very, very clean sound. Far less money for a superior sound. Go figure. The gc12c is probably the most guitar you're going to get for under 1,000. Far better than Cordoba, by the way. The truss rod in the Cordoba neck throws the balance off, and is of no use anyway.

The gc12c, and I would absolutely get the cedar, is actually pretty close to a concert quality guitar.

Ready to upgrade from a beginner classical guitar?

By Green Leaf

from Vancouver

Comments about Yamaha GC12 Handcrafted Classical Guitar:

This is the guitar for when you're ready to leave all those beginner guitars behind. The guitar is clear and crisp and snaps in the trebles, and has a beautiful tight low end. Quality tuners and built extremely well.

I have three pieces of advice if you buy this guitar:

1. Get an arched back hardshell case. The case that comes with the guitar is really nice and lightweight, but I just don't trust all of these zippered polyfoam cases on the market right now.

2. Replace the factory strings with high tension strings. D'Addario 46s are great.

3. Get the cedar top version.

You could shell out about twice as much for the GC32, and never have to buy another guitar again, if you have the money. But the GC12C is a really nice guitar on it's own.

GC 12 Review

By Daniel

from International

Pros

  • Balanced
  • Excellent tuners
  • Good case

Cons

  • Composite saddle

Comments about Yamaha GC12 Handcrafted Classical Guitar:

I am comparing this to my Ramirez R4. Since they are right next to me, I can give an objective opinion.
    Cosmetics:
R4 uses the finest solid Indian rosewood and cedar woods. Ebony fingerboard, highly detailed rosette.
CG has a surprisingly beautiful, highly figured cedar back and sides. Tight and well constructed. The grain on the cedar top has far wider grain spacing but no noticable runout.
R4 should have better tuners but the CG has noticibly smoother ones. R4 has a black background where the CG is gold plate. Certainly the R4 looks better.
Both are very playable although the R4 has some intonation problems on 15 D and 17 and higher G. CG has no noticable problems, a fine fretboard. R4 has a shorter lower bout, a bit wider and is somewhat more comfortable to me.
Sound: I asked 2 of my guru friends for their opinion and mine on a blind test. Not really valid for me because I instantly knew the difference with the heel shape but here is opinion consensus. R4, louder, punchier, bass heavy, tends to dominate, I am assuming that this is what you call the Spanish sound. GC has a much more balanced sound. Chords are not so pronounced but sing with a pure voice. The overtones are clearly discernable. Much more than the Ramirez. Both have a fine sustain.
Both guitars have been hand fitted by me with bone saddles. Really made a difference on the GC, not so much on the R4.
Yamaha GC 12 HMK080065 2016 (price was restricted by the censors!)
    Ramirez R4 2005 $2800
You can bet I would highly recommend it.

    Lovely instrument

    By 12f

    from New York, New York

Comments about Yamaha GC12 Handcrafted Classical Guitar:

What a wonderful sensation when I first held this incredibly light and finely made guitar - I'll never forget it. I own the GC12 cedar. It feels delicate and fragile, but of course it's anything but. It's a great joy to play and sounds so beautiful that I won't bother trying to find the words. This is a seriously fine instrument.
