Hand selected materials, handcrafted construction - at an amazing price.

With a solid Engelmann spruce top, multilayered mahogany/rosewood reinforced neck, and ebony fretboard, the Yamaha LJ6 acoustic guitar can be judged an excellent deal on materials alone. Yet where this jumbo really shines is on the strength of its handcrafted construction by expert Japanese luthiers. Every step in the creation of this excellent instrument, from tonewood selection to hand-sanding the frets, is done in a small factory by master craftsmen.

Body top
Most manufacturers are using Sitka spruce tops for their high end models. In Yamaha's experience, Engelmann spruce (Canada) naturally suits the role for top woods better than any other. The overriding quality for body top material is an allowance for resonance and Engelmann spruce has this attribute in abundance. It is a light wood that is easy to work and enables a good tone response with a wide harmonic range. Visually Engelmann spruce is comfortable on the eye and its opaque light yellow tint is reminiscent of a mature acoustic instrument.

Back & side
Yamaha uses rosewood for both the back and sides on all the L series models. The rosewood blends extremely well with the Engelmann spruce top. It disperses resonance evenly and effortlessly.

Neck block
The neck block reinforces the neck joint. Yamaha has improved the conventional C block design by enlarging the surface area that is in contact with the top of the guitar. The block securely meets the underside of the top adding a real depth to the tone of the instrument.

X-bracing maps out the vibration patterns of the guitar. Each of the eight braces has been carefully positioned in order to bring out the tone in a balanced fashion and find a natural harmony with the guitar's tone woods.

Multilayered reinforced neck
Traditionally, an acoustic guitar neck is carved from a single timber block. As the grain of the timber has to be angled at about 14 degrees to accommodate the headstock, it leaves itself vulnerable to excessive stress. To alleviate the potential of neck movement over time, Yamaha has introduced multilayered necks.

The LJ6 model features a strip of rosewood set into the center of the mahogany neck. Rosewood has been chosen for its rigidity and the way it complements mahogany tonally.

The unique larger bridge on the LJ6 provides a more efficient transfer of the string vibrations to the body of the guitar, giving a tight, clear midrange and a full, balanced tone. Handcrafted with chamfered edges, the bridge design offers a perfect balance of tone, comfort, and style.

Yamaha has over thirty years experience of crafting quality steel string instruments by hand. Today's L series guitars are a testament to the decades of that extensive research and development work.

Yamaha design themes center around the following points:

A balanced tone and response. The ultimate goal. Bass and treble must complement each other, encouraging inspiration from the guitarist rather than compensation.

Dovetail neck joint. Since the '70s, Yamaha has adopted a unique dovetail neck joint. This particular joint gives the guitar the excellent surface to surface (neck to body) contact. In the joint there is nothing but timber. This enables and indeed encourages resonance flow from the neck to the body, aiding the achievement of a balanced tone and response.

Blending of woods. Yamaha's experience of blending quality woods ensures that the highs are really sustained and note texture is under maximum control at all times by the player.

Body Designs. Yamaha's original L series has shoulders that are slightly more slender than a standard dreadnought design and the body has been designed to be subtly wider. This gives the guitar a more definite tone.

Lacquer expertise. Without a doubt, one of Yamaha's most significant strengths. They work very closely with lacquer manufacturers. The focus being less is more. Specially developed finishing materials, unique to Yamaha are used on handcrafted models. Ultimately, this gives the guitar every chance to breathe and tonally shine. A good acoustic guitar must feel alive and not simply just sound good! Includes case.

Small body, big sound

By Tom R

from Piedmont Triad, N.C.

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ6 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:

Buy one today. You won't be disappointed. These also are hard to find in brick and mortar stores like Guitar Center, although some specialty Yamaha dealers like the one where I bought mine from carry them in stock.
The guitar is well built, has a terrific finish and excellent materials. I compared it to a similar style guitar with all solid sides and back and could not tell much difference. And dont be fooled by the small size of this instrument. It has a hefty tone that compares with other larger body jumbo acoustics in my collection. Nice balance too on the highs and lows and was pretty well set up right out of the box. Mine also came with a polyurethane type of case that holds up pretty well and give this beautiful instrument the support and protection it needs.
Solid Engleman spruce top and rosewood back and sides. Not solid on the back and sides, but if you are on a budget and want to save a couple of hundred bucks or more, the laminate sounds just fine. It's really the top anyway that makes most of the difference and this has one of the best solid tops around.
I would have paid more for this guitar. And the fact that mine came with a case made it an even better value all around.

Great Value

By Dallen

from Chicago

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ6 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:

It's almost impossible to find a new L series guitar to test drive (even in Chicago), so I ordered this one on faith alone. Ultimately, I'm glad I did. The first one I received had some cosmetic problems, but MF gladly exchanged it without hesitation.
Although made in China, the Master Luthiers from Hamamatsu have trained these people well. The quality materials and attention to detail is evident. Visually, it's a treat to look at. If there's such a thing as understated yet fancy...this is it. Subtle MOP headstock logo/fret markers, and a beautiful rosette with Abalone inlays. Nicely grained solid Engelmann top, and nice matching on the rosewood B&S. The ebony fretboard is a tad wider than my FG, which for me, is a big plus.I wasn't expecting a major step up in sound quality from the FG, but that's what I got. The body is slightly deeper, so the bottom end will not get lost. In fact, it was much boomier than I expected, but in a good way. If I had to choose all over again, I would make the exact same choice.

Great guitar

By Gitfiddle42

from Wa. state

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ6 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:

Flawless workmanship and finish plays like butter great rich tone.
After 2 disapointing epiphone inspired by texan trys both where total junk, I took a chance on the LJ6.Man am I glad I did this a wonderful instrument! the build quality, finsh and tone are all top notch. I did the same as I do with all my guitars added bone saddle bone pin's and lowered the action. This baby sounds as good or better than any guitar i've played under 1000.00 $ and better than some I've played costing more than that. For less than 5 bill's you get workmanship that is hard to come by these days.

Very Well Made ...

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ6 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:

I ordered this without knowing what size it was; I was concerned it would be too small and sound too bright to my ear. However, the size of the upper and lower bouts are the same as those of a typical dreadnought so it has a good, broad sound. The highs, mediums and lows are all full and sparkle to my ear. The workmanship is superb. The MF ad is inaccurate, its not made in Japan, its made in China and it was made beautifully. I have never seen rosewood that seemed to have such depth as the wood does on the back of this guitar. The ebony fretboard is not black like you might expect, its almost a rosewood color but it is hard and fast. I do not need to have it set up, it seems perfect right out of the box it came in. The strings seem to be good quality with a coating of some kind so they should last a while. It is definitely a keeper.

Surprised and Very Pleased

By bigald18

from Lebanon, CT

Comments about Yamaha L Series LJ6 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar with Case:

Figured I wouldn't like the case because it's polyfoam, but it's great. Action on the guitar was fine although I replaced plastic saddle with a compensated bone saddle. Intonation was right on right out of the box. The craftsmanship on this handcrafted guitar is excellent and the finish is perfect as is typical for Yamaha. Put Martin SP Phosphor Bronze light strings on it and the sound was excellent. Replaced them with medium gauge Martin SP 80-20's and it sounds wonderful. If this guitar were stolen I would absolutely replace it with the same.
